Fraud rings use government’s NT$6,000 handout plan in latest telephone scam

2023-01-05

Earlier this week, Premier Su Tseng-chang announced the government was planning to give every Taiwanese NT$6,000 from last year’s tax surplus. Though the plan has not yet been finalized, already, fraud rings are taking the program as an opportunity to scam locals.

Some locals have received text messages purporting to be from the Ministry of Digital Affairs. They contain instructions telling the recipient to open a link to redeem their NT$6,000 handout. The Executive Yuan on Thursday warned against the scam, saying that the government will not send text messages for locals to collect the money. It adds that the National Police Agency has launched relevant mechanisms to crack down on the scam rings.
