Sixth-grade storyteller uses Braille to share tales with kindergarteners

An elementary student in Yilan is making waves with her exceptional storytelling skills. Sixth-grader Peng Yi-hsin is a student with limited vision, and she visits kindergartens to share comic stories with younger kids. Peng is almost blind in both eyes and reads using Braille. That sometimes means studying takes more time and effort than for other children. But Peng is determined not to let it stop her from doing what she loves. She likes to tell stories and sing, and hopes to become a psychologist when she grows up.
The storyteller holds a bee in one hand and a bear in the other. She brings their voices to life vividly and the story roars along.
These little children are watching everything closely. They can see the performer isn’t reading from a script at all, she memorized the story, using lots of different voices and impressive storytelling techniques. Currently a sixth-grader at Sanxing Elementary in Yilan, Peng Yi-hsin has nystagmus, meaning her eyes move involuntarily. She is almost blind in both eyes, but she won’t let that get in the way of her dreams.

I might be slower than other people. At least I take longer than others. Other people know something as soon as they look at it, but I have to touch it. I use Braille.
For Peng’s classmates, a story is just a glance away. But for Peng, learning to read Braille through her fingertips is a slower and harder journey. Still, her school grades are outstanding, and in her free time, she likes to sing in a choir, and take part in public speaking competitions. She even makes visits like this to kindergartens, to meet smaller children and practice her storytelling skills.

When she encounters difficulties, she sometimes says she feels discouraged. And she sometimes says she doesn’t want to study. But I always speak to her encouragingly.

Her attitude is very positive and constructive, and she doesn’t give up, in any area. She’s an excellent role model for the other children.
Peng says that when she grows up she’d like to be a psychologist. Then she can help other people with conditions like hers, or similar difficult circumstances in life. For now, she’s in storytelling mode. The classroom is full of laughter, and no difficulty is the final chapter.

宜蘭一名小學六年級的學生彭亦歆，罹患先天性患"眼球震顫症"，雙眼幾乎失明，但她沒被命運擊倒，除了成績優異，還利用課餘時間參加活動，甚至還到幼兒園，為小朋友說故事。別人可以邊看邊念，但她得花三到四倍時間背起來，不過她的故事課，總是充滿歡笑與感動。
手裡拿著一隻蜜蜂與大熊，活靈活現的幫他們配音，故事就像活了起來。
小朋友觀察入微，說故事的姊姊從頭到尾沒看稿，不僅把故事背了下來，還用各種語調、聲音呈現，令人好佩服。目前就讀宜蘭三星國小六年級的彭亦歆，因為罹患先天性"眼球震顫症"，雙眼幾乎失明，但她沒被命運擊倒。

“進度有可能比別人慢，至少(付出的時間)比別人多，別人一看就知道，但我還要摸， 我用點字”
別人讀故事，可以一目了然，但彭亦歆要透過手指頭，一字一字摸索，付出加倍努力，不只成績優異，彭亦歆還利用課餘時間，參加合唱團、演講比賽，還回到幼兒園講故事、跟小朋友互動。

彭亦歆說將來想當心理醫師，幫助跟他一樣，受限於先天狀況的人。這一堂故事課，不只有滿滿的笑聲，還有彭亦歆對生命奮力不懈的感動。
