Food and drink industry looks to hire thousands, in post-pandemic staff shortage

A new survey from a jobseekers’ website suggests that 90% of businesses are hiring new staff this January. The sector in most need of fresh workers is the food and drink industry, where many restaurants are severely understaffed. Large food and drink conglomerates are looking to expand in the post-pandemic era, especially now that Taiwan’s borders are open to foreign visitors. Some businesses plan to hire hundreds of new employees in 2023.

At mealtimes, orders come in thick and fast. The owner, and almost all the employees, each have several jobs to do at once. This service person is wiping the tables down and welcoming new guests inside.
As the pandemic calms down, there’s a massive upswing in eating out. Lots of businesses are planning to open new locations, inflating demand for staff. But there’s been a shortage ever since the pandemic receded. At the Kanpai Group, for example, they are looking for 400 people to join their ranks.

This year, we will continue to expand. And in these circumstances, we hope to have more fresh blood come and join us.
Last year the Wowprime Group had a 10% staff shortage, and they plan to hire 500 new employees in 2023. The TTFB Group is banking on post-pandemic recovery, and they plan to hire a whopping 2,000 staff members this year. At the Mala Group, there are 600 jobs on offer.

We are optimistic about post-pandemic recovery. This year we have plans to expand in north, south and central Taiwan. In the first quarter, we expect to expand into 50 new locations.

The industry has been affected by the reopening of international borders, of course, as well as the 10-day Lunar New Year holidays coming up, and Peace Memorial Day national holiday. So looking at the first quarter, industries based on domestic demand will have more desire to hire staff, creating more growth in domestic industries than in export industries.
The survey suggests the sectors most in need of workers are food and drink, hospitality, leisure and tourism, as well as wholesale retail and trade, financial securities and accounting, transportation, logistics and the warehouse industry.

內需市場缺工嚴重，人力銀行統計，新的一年高達九成的企業都在喊徵才，其中缺工人數最多的就是「餐飲住宿與休閒旅遊」，像是王品集團，從疫情後就出現10%的人力缺口，今年要一口氣招募500人，至於乾杯集團，也有400名的人力要招募，紛紛祭出高薪招兵買馬。
燒肉店店長邊解說邊料理，讓顧客只要負責大口吃。除了桌邊服務，負責送餐的也是他。
用餐時段，訂單滿滿滿，不只店長，幾乎每個工作人員都身兼數職，另外這名外場員工，又是擦桌又要忙著去店門口，接待顧客。
疫情趨緩，內用的民眾大舉回歸，加上業者計畫展店，也讓餐飲人才需求大幅提高，只是這樣的人力缺口，從疫情後就一直補不齊，像是乾杯集團，就有400名人力要招募。

王品集團在去年也出現10%的人力缺口，今年要一口氣招募500人。而瓦城集團同樣看好疫後復甦，大喊要再招聘2000名人力。至於馬辣集團，也有600名職缺待補。

“看好疫後復甦，今年在北中南各地都有拓點的計畫，那在Q1的部分，我們預計會拓展50間左右。”

“畢竟受邊境解封的效應，再加上接下來有長達10天的春節連假，以及228連假，所以展望第一季來看，內需型產業的徵才意願比較高，呈現內熱外冷。”
根據調查，以產業別來看，缺工人數最多的包括餐飲住宿與休閒旅遊、批發零售與貿易、金融保險與會計統計，以及運輸與物流倉儲等等。
