Ex-Trump adviser says only China, not the US, poses threat to Taiwan

Friday was the last day of a Taiwan tour by former U.S. national security adviser Robert O’Brien. At a press conference, he distanced himself from remarks he made to the news outlet Semafor, in which he suggested the U.S. would sooner destroy Taiwan’s semiconductor sector than let it be captured by China. The comments had courted controversy in Taiwan. On Friday, O’Brien emphasized that only China and not the U.S. was a threat to Taiwan.

I’m never surprised when the CCP says nasty things about me. That industry, that great industry isn’t going to survive a war with China. They don’t want to live in an Orwellian totalitarian environment like exists in China today. The only country threatening to invade Taiwan is the PRC, led by the Communist Party of China. America would never invade Taiwan. America said it will defend Taiwan. Joe Biden said four times that the United States will defend Taiwan.
The former security official also commented on the imminent severing of diplomatic ties between Taiwan and Honduras. He said the U.S. would help Taiwan deepen its relationships with democratic partners to prevent China’s authoritarianism from expanding.

美國前白宮國安顧問歐布萊恩，率團訪台五天，此行不但會晤總統蔡英文、也拜會國、民兩黨，離台前舉辦記者會，針對先前外媒報導，他在杜哈論壇時提到’’若中國攻打台灣，美國將摧毀台灣半導體設施、避免被中國接收的’’毀台論’’，他再次澄清闢謠。

“對於中共這樣毀謗我，我一點也不意外，我指的是在半導體產業裡的人，不可能在經過戰爭後還願意留下，活在像中國這樣的極權國家，唯一想摧毀，侵略台灣的，就是中國共產黨，美國從不會想要侵略台灣，美國是協防台灣，拜登曾公開講過四次美國會協防台灣”
對中國謠言毀謗，歐布萊恩澄清再澄清，更主動提到近來台灣友邦宏都拉斯，希望轉而跟中國建交事件，他強調，台灣應該深化跟民主同盟國家關係，美國也會全力協助、防堵中國威權勢力，持續擴張。
