CDC urges against touching wild animals after first Oz virus death

2023-06-28

One of the most popular tourist activities in Nara, Japan is feeding the region’s white deer. But for now, you might want to think twice. A Japanese woman in her 70s has died from myocarditis linked to an Oz virus infection. It’s believed she contracted the virus from ticks on deer. She is now the world’s first known fatality from the Oz virus. The CDC is urging the public not to touch wild animals on trips abroad, and to apply insect repellent to prevent tick bites.

A well-known blogger writes that Nara’s deer are cute, but people need to be careful, as deer skin can carry lots of ticks. These deer are friendly and may even rub their heads against people, raising the risk of viral transmission. The blogger said travelers should know that the number of ticks on deer may be 100 times greater than they imagine, so petting a deer is basically the same as petting ticks.
