Malaysian immigrant Koh Her Xin brings Peranakan cuisine to Taiwan

A Malaysian immigrant is bringing the distinctive “Nonya” cuisine to Taiwan. Koh Her Xin moved to Taiwan to study theater design. She started sharing her Chinese-Malay heritage with classmates through food. Taiwanese friends fell in love with the rich fusion of Chinese and Malay culture, called Peranakan or Nonya. After graduating, Koh opened a Nonya dessert business in Tamsui. But advertising online, her treats were a hidden secret known only to the well-connected. Now she’s opened a store to bring her culinary expertise, and her heritage, to a wider audience.

Peranakan culture stems from the 15th entury, the age of Chinese explorer Zheng He, when many Chinese immigrants settled in Malaysia’s Malacca. As they integrated with local culture, a fusion cuisine was born. Malaysian-born Koh Her Xin reinvents that tradition for Taiwan.

“Food is the god of the people,” right? So to promote Peranakan culture I have to start with food to lead people deeper in. We use Chinese cooking methods and incorporate Malay spices and ingredients, to produce this taste of the Nonya culture. So I think people get started with food, and if they like the food, then gradually they start to learn more about what Peranakan culture is.

Koh uses many different colorful ingredients to create these enticing desserts. The internet quickly picked up on her delectable Nonya cakes, and customers encouraged her to open a bricks-and-mortar store. The warm and cozy little store is full of the soul of Malaysia.

Koh insists on making everything fresh each day. She wants her friends in her adopted home of Taiwan to enjoy the Nonya taste so close to her heart.

美學融入娘惹糕點 馬來妹讓家鄉味飄香台灣

來自馬來西亞的許云繽,年輕時來台研讀劇場設計,與同學分享家鄉美食娘惹糕,意外大受好評,讓她開始賣起娘惹糕,畢業後更透過網路宣傳,成為淡水山上隱藏版的人氣甜點店。許云繽的慧心巧手,讓傳統的娘惹糕點,撫慰異地遊子的心,也讓娘惹文化意外在台掀起熱潮。

娘惹文化來自15世紀鄭和下西洋時期,中國人移居到位於馬來西亞的馬六甲,在當地開始深耕落地,飲食習慣逐漸與當地融合。來自馬來西亞的許云繽,在台灣用自己的方式,燉煮出娘惹美食。

“民以食為天嘛,所以我要在推廣娘惹文化的時候,就是要先用吃,才讓大家更深入娘惹文化。用中華文化的烹調方式,然後結合馬來人的一些香料、一些食材,然後去體現那個娘惹這一個文化裡面的那個味道,所以我就想說就是從食物下手,如果喜歡這個食物的話,他們就會去慢慢再去了解,什麽是娘惹文化。”

利用各種食材熬煮的色彩,點綴出一個個誘人可口的糕點。許云繽的娘惹糕點,很快的透過網路打出口碑,在客人的鼓勵之下開設店面,溫馨小巧的店內裝潢,也充滿南洋風情。

許云繽堅持新鮮現做,希望在台灣這第二個家鄉,世世代代流傳著,屬於她心中的娘惹滋味。
