Renowned engineer Terence Rodrigues explains how he found home in Taiwan

Today we meet one of the global professionals who’s made Taiwan their home. Hardware engineer Terence Rodrigues is a globally renowned tech expert. Working for Google, he contributed to apps that people use every day, like Google Maps. He grew up in India and the U.S., and had made a name for himself by the age of 30. Later in life, he decided to make his third home in Taiwan. The beauty of the Chinese language attracted him, as well as the pleasant conditions of life in Taiwan. In 2018 he was awarded a permanent residence card for his huge achievements in the tech sector.

After traveling to dozens of nations around the world, Terence Rodrigues says Taiwan is his favorite country.

Having grown up in India and the U.S., seven years ago Rodrigues fulfilled a professional dream by taking up a position here in Taiwan. His affinity with the country goes back to his student years in the U.S., when he came here for one year to learn Chinese.

He’s made his career in the cutting-edge communications industry. Taiwan’s impressive transport network and warm, industrious culture make it the perfect place for him to do great things.

Taiwan had a really good, well-developed tech sector, and world-class manufacturing facilities, right? So that spoke to my interest in technology. So I was always interested in finding a job opportunity in Taiwan. And so when I found it, I said “I have to take that job opportunity,” because it allowed me to work as an engineer, but also I could live in Taiwan and study Mandarin in a local setting. And I could also learn about a new culture. So all of those reasons in total said, “I have to be here in Taiwan.”

Rodrigues says that when he first heard Chinese spoken, the hairs on the back of his neck stood up. From that moment on, he was inspired by the beauty of Chinese to travel to Taiwan. Now this is his third home in the world. He is part of the team that developed the Google Maps navigator, which is his way of making Taiwan more visible to other global travelers and explorers.

情繫中文印度博士獲頒梅花卡如願定居臺灣

印度籍新住民馬志業(Terence Rodrigues)博士，曾在30歲就被美國譽為發明大師，他長期專注在電腦系統的創新，已獲得超過30項的專利申請，他在科技上的卓越成就，2018年獲內政部移民署頒發梅花卡，台灣成馬志業第三個家。

走遍世界各地，最哪個喜歡國家，馬志業用英文字卡拚出台灣。

印度與美國是熟悉的生長環境，7年前馬志業終於圓夢，來台工作定居，不過，他與台灣的緊密連結，必須回溯到在美國求學的時期，為了學中文，特別飛來台灣住一年。

“台東、台南、阿里山、台中、花蓮，最喜歡的地方是小琉球。”

一直在最頂尖的資訊產業工作，台灣綿密的交通網絡，與友善勤奮，是成就良緣美事的條件。

“台灣有非常進步的科技產業，和世界級的生產設施，這讓我對科技有興趣，所以我很喜歡在台灣找工作，如果我找到工作，我一定會接受這個機會，因為這讓我可以當工程師，除些之外我還能住在台灣，和學習當地的中文，也可以學習一個新的文化，所以這些原因告訴我，我一定要住在台灣。”

從第一次聽到中文時的寒毛豎起，優美的中文開啟馬志業的人生導航，第三個家的逐夢之旅，他一同參與的Google Map導航，則是最實際的行動反饋，善用他的專業，持續讓世界看見台灣的優勢。
