Kee Tai holds press conference to explain disaster involving Dazhi apartment buildings

Kee Tai Property Company has been engulfed in scandal ever since a disaster in which an apartment building in Taipei’s suburb of Dazhi dramatically sank a storey into the ground. The company’s upper management disappeared for four days until Sunday, when they came out to hold a press conference to explain what was going on. Its chairman Chen Shih-ming announced he would resign to take responsibility for the incident, before making a quick exit, while CEO Feng Hsien-mien stayed behind to answer questions from reporters. He said the company’s finances were sound and estimated that damages would reach close to NT$250 million. He promised the company would take a responsible approach until the end.

Outsiders are saying that compensation may reach NT$1 billion, but this is unrealistic. At the most it will be NT$300 million. The company’s deposits and cash balance stand at NT$3.8 billion. We’re able to allot more than NT$ 5 billion.

I’ve already met with Kee Tai’s CEO Mr. Feng at the Taipei City Government. Mr. Feng promised to allocate NT$100 million into a trust.

During discussions between Kee Tai and Taipei Deputy Mayor Lee Ssu-chuan on Sunday morning, consensus was reached on three areas. This included allocating NT$100 million for recovery and resettlement funds, paying three years of rent to residents of affected apartments, and reconstructing the buildings. In addition, it’s estimated that damages from the disaster amount to nearly NT$250 million. The company promised that it would not transfer assets to avoid liability.

基泰與台北副市長李四川在周日上午見面會商,雙方達成三點共識,包含提撥1億做復原安置經費、支付受災戶3年租金,也會配合重建,另外,也預估災損費近2.5億,保證公司不會脫產。
