US Secretary of State brings up Taiwan Strait in year-end remarks

The U.S. State Department on Wednesday held its annual year-end press conference. Secretary of State Antony Blinken gave a speech of about 40 minutes outlining Washington’s policy for 2024. The plans include maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. Let’s hear what he said.

We’re deepening cooperation and coordination between NATO and our Indo-Pacific allies. These efforts have allowed us to engage more effectively when tackling areas of concern, like China’s coercive trade and economic practices, peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and the East and South China Seas, and human rights.
In his speech, Blinken said that Washington could continue to engage with China while strengthening its ties with partners in the Indo-Pacific region. He pointed to the U.S.-Japan-South Korea trilateral summit, which has brought the three nations into a new mode of cooperation. He also said that the U.S.’ relations with the Philippines and India were only warming up. Blinken also said that the Group of Seven and the European Union would continue to counter challenges from Beijing. He added that the relevant authorities would continue in close communication with Beijing to reduce the risk of miscalculations.

美國國務院週三舉行年終記者會，國務卿布林肯演說約40分鐘，點出明年政策重點，包括台海和平穩定。

“美方致力於深化與北約和印太盟友的合作，藉此能更有效因應關切的領域，如中國在貿易與經濟的脅迫行為，關切台海、東海、南海的和平穩定，以及人權問題。”
美國國務卿布林肯，在演說中，表示明年將持續以強勢姿態接觸中國，加強美國在印太的合作夥伴關係，像是今年美日韓的大衛營，已經建立三方的合作新時代，與菲律賓和印度的夥伴關係也逐步深化，七大工業國集團、歐盟也將持續共同抗衡來自北京當局的挑戰，布林肯也指出，將持續與北京高層外交溝通，減少誤判。
