Today we take you to meet Juin Shieh, an artist who is also a teacher at National Tsing Hua University. In her latest solo exhibition titled "She Postscript," Shieh has created artworks evoking the struggles women face every day. Many of her works were inspired by Greek mythology. Our very own Stephany Yang spoke to Shieh to find out more.
This work is called "The Birth of Athena." After Shieh found a mannequin in the garbage at her school, she created Athena. Besides adorning her with a beautiful black dress, she also created a basketball net. The work explores women’s rights.

Athena was born from Zeus’ head and she was born armed. We cannot tell her sexuality. So, I dressed her in a beautiful, yet dangerous, yet protective dress. I gave her a light to shine her beautiful dress. I also moved her womb outwards, symbolized as a basket. It is a basket-shooting port. So, this is the perfect Athena to me. The basket shooting port symbolizes woman’s womb. It also symbolizes Athena’s womb. Every woman has a womb but it is your right if you want to use it or if you don’t. It is a human right.
Another work is called "Moving in Chaos.” Shieh has created a moving object with wheels. Powered by a remote controller, it moves around in a small frame. The work was inspired by Baroque patterns and Shieh’s childhood. It explores boundaries.

This work is about collisions making noise. It is like our boundaries. Everyone has their life boundaries. I made ornamented baroque-style patterns. Underneath there are wheels. The wheels will make metal noise when the collision happens. It reminds me that I have boundaries and I am framed. However, when I am trying to make it move, the frame will move too. I found myself traveling with boundaries.
Shieh obtained her doctorate of fine arts at the NYU Steinhardt School. She currently teaches at the Department of Arts and Design at National Tsing Hua University. Shieh’s works have been exhibited at several institutions. She juggles many roles as a daughter, mother, wife, scholar and artist. She says a lot of works have been inspired by her life, travels and the books she reads.

When I was 26 or 27 something, I traveled alone in Europe for two months all by myself. I visited churches, I visited museums, I visited every spot and I also meet people from every country. It inspired me and also opened my vision for art. Art is not only for art’s sake. Art is like your daily life. Art is like your culture.
During her career, Shieh has dedicated herself to women’s studies. She has created numerous artworks to portray the obstacles and struggles facing women, as well as showcase their power. Some of her works also touch on the topic of the #MeToo movement and Greek mythology.

Recently, there is a big issue about #MeToo. I have some artwork which is about #MeToo. I use also Greek mythology women, like a forest nymph who is Syrinx. She was sexually harassed by Pan. Pan is a kind of God with a goat bottom and a human torso with a horn on his head. He was chasing Syrinx. So, I painted so many paintings in this exhibition. Like those small ones where Pan was chasing and running away.
Shieh’s solo exhibition “She Postscript” will be on show at Mind Set Art Center till Jan. 12.

透過藝術詮釋女性意識 謝鴻均個展「她・回神後語」展出中

今天帶大家認識一位台灣藝術家，同時也是國立清華大學的教授謝鴻均，目前舉辦個展「她・回神後語」，藝術作品呈現女性日常面臨的碰撞與掙扎，不少創作也受到希臘神話的啟發，一起來看看。
這件名為《雅典娜的誕生》的作品，是謝鴻均運用在學校的垃圾堆裡發現的人體模型，創造出的雅典娜。除了製作了漂亮的黑色裙外，還有一個籃球網，作品探討了婦女權利。

"雅典娜是從宙斯的頭顱中誕生的，她生來就穿著盔甲。我給她穿上了一件美麗、危險及具有保護作用的衣服。我給了她一盞燈，照亮她美麗的裙子。我還將她的子宮向外移動，用一個籃球架的網子做象徵。對我來說這是完美的雅典娜。籃網象徵女性的子宮。它也象徵著雅典娜的子宮。每個女人都有一個子宮，但您想用或不想用，都是您的權利，這是一項人權。"
另一件作品叫做《移動之亂II》。謝鴻均做了一個帶輪子的物件，由遙控器驅動，在一個小框架內移動。作品的靈感來自巴洛克圖案和謝鴻均的童年。作品探索邊界。

"這作品是關於碰撞產生噪音，這就像我們的界限。每個人都有自己的人生界線。我設計了巴洛克風格的裝飾圖案。下面有輪子，碰撞時，車輪會發出金屬噪音。它提醒我，我是有界線的，我是被限制的。然而，當我試圖讓它移動時，框架也會移動，我發現自己在旅行中帶著界線。"
謝鴻均自臺灣師範大學美術系畢業，擁有紐約大學教育學院藝術創作博士學位，現職國立清華大學藝術與設計系專任教授。謝鴻均經常受邀藝術館展出。她也扮演著女兒、母親、妻子、學者和藝術家等多種角色。她說很多作品的靈感都來自她的生活、旅行和讀過的書。

"當我26、27歲的時候，我獨自去歐洲旅行了兩個月。我參觀了教堂，參觀了博物館，參觀了每個景點，也認識了來自各國的人們。它啟發了我，也開啟了我對藝術的視野。藝術不僅僅是為了藝術而藝術，藝術就像你的日常生活，藝術就像你的文化。"
謝鴻均致力於女性研究，她有許多藝術作品描繪了女性面臨的阻礙和困境，並彰顯他們的力量。她的一些作品也源自#MeToo運動和希臘神話的主題。

"之前#MeToo這樣的重大議題，讓我有一些相關創作，我也使用希臘神話中的女性，例如森林仙女席琳克絲，她曾遭到牧羊神潘恩的性騷擾。潘恩是一個半羊、半人、頭上有角的神，他追逐著席琳克絲。這次畫展我畫了很多畫，就像潘恩追席琳克絲一樣。"
謝鴻均的個展「她・回神後語」於安卓藝術展出至1月12日。
