‘Smart plant factory’ in New Taipei grows lettuces with generative AI

A “smart plant factory” in New Taipei is growing lettuces with generative AI. The factory uses hydroponics to grow a wide variety of different lettuces. They are sold in stores and restaurants, and consumers can buy their own system to grow produce at home. FTV took a tour of the factory.

This is called a Batavia lettuce. It has red pigment. There’s quite a high amount of anthocyanidin in this, so it needs more red light in its lighting.
Factory director Lin Hsin-hung explains that in hydroponics, the growth of plants depends on the strength and color of the light sources as well as the arrangement and distance of the lamps. It’s difficult to adequately mimic natural environments.

In the first step, when we check it before packaging it, we’re looking at its appearance. For example, has it squeezed the top of the container, does it have any bad parts, and if so, we cut them off.
These insights are the result of years of work by the development team. This “smart plant factory” in New Taipei’s Banqiao uses automated technology to produce organic hydroponic plants. They are sold in department stores and convenience stores, as well as high-end restaurants. And you can even buy a “smart field” to take home and grow your own.

People have made lots of breakthroughs now, especially at Nvidia, in terms of chip settings. They’re very good now. Also we have generative AI. Previously we had it fully automated, so if our nutrient feed lacked something, when it was detected, it would be automatically added. Or if it got too hot, the cold air would automatically be turned on.
The farm looks like a series of small aquarium tanks, but they can grow many different types of lettuce. Special modes apply to different varieties of the plant. You can even try the system at home. Perhaps before long you won’t even need to press a button to control it, but you’ll just run the farm on voice control. With AI, anything seems possible.

AI浪潮來臨，新北板橋就有座’’智慧植物工廠’’，不僅靠自動化設備、仿造天然環境，生產無毒水耕蔬菜，甚至還推出家庭版的’’智慧農田’’，外型有如小小一台水族箱，可以種植蔬菜，簡單操作就能當智慧農夫。
無塵衣、無塵帽，工作人員全身包緊緊，還得小心翼翼、拿起菜苗定植，能不能長得茁壯，每個環節是關鍵。

“這個是叫做紅火萵苣，那它裡面的有紅色的顏色，那這個東西裡面，其實它的花青素，就比較高一點，那它需要的光裡面，當然就是紅光會比較大一點”
植物工廠負責人林信宏大解密，光源強度、光譜顏色，甚至連燈具排列及距離，都是影響水耕菜生長的主要關鍵，想仿造天然環境，沒那麼容易。

“初步的確認出來的狀況在進包裝之前，我們針對會有一些外觀的部分，比如說頂到啊，或是一些不良的部分，我們會進行把它拔除”
這些經驗都是研發團隊多年成果，位在新北板橋的這座’’智慧植物工廠’’，靠自動化設備，生產無毒水耕菜，銷售通路鎖定百貨超市、或高檔餐廳，甚至還推出家庭版的’’智慧農田’’，讓民眾在家，也能當AI農夫。

“因為現在大家都突破了一些很多的東西，尤其像輝達他們，那些晶片設定那些東西，現在已經很厲害了，再加上說AI生成式學習。我們之前在全自動，那個東西裡面，我們的營養液缺乏什麼，偵測到的時候，它就直接自動加，溫度太高了，冷氣就開始打”
外型有如小小一台水族箱，可種植各種萵苣生菜，依照品項不同，啟動專屬模式，民眾在家也能當智慧農夫，或許下次，不需要動動手指，靠聲控就能種菜，AI熱浪下，什麼事都有可能。
