German immigrant and her husband run printmaking studio in Taichung

A German immigrant and her husband are running a printmaking studio in Taichung. Katharina Eckert and Tung Yu-hao met as art students in Germany. The printmakers now run a studio where they exhibit their work and offer a wealth of art classes for the local community. They’re also involved in community design projects, bringing beauty to the streets of Yunlin. FTV took a tour around their studio to learn about the creative process.
Each print hanging here has a story behind it. They are based on stories collected by Katharina Eckert and her husband during their art studies in Germany. But the works are brand-new paper intaglio prints.

For example, this one comes from something one grandpa told me. When he was a child, they had nothing, and just once a week his mother would make a cake, because their friends would come over to make music. He’s peeking through the keyhole to see if there’s any cake left.
The couple based the series of works on 12 themes. For three weeks, they exhibited the prints, made using a paper intaglio technique not found in Germany, in the city of Darmstadt.

A local Darmstadt gallery owner came specially to see our work at the opening of the exhibition. Because he hadn’t heard of the paper intaglio technique and was curious about it.
The novel Taiwanese printmaking technique opened a new avenue for exchange with Germany. It was an unforgettable artistic exchange for the young couple.
The pair are both printmakers, and are involved in community design projects. These “Wukelu Bamboo Shoots” installations in Dounan Township, Yunlin, is one of their works.

We were at my home, and I was firing it with a blowtorch. When you spray a kind of acid on it, it gradually forms this blue-green color. It’s all deliberate, all in the plan.
Eckert and Tung were peers in a postgraduate class. They moved to his hometown Taichung after graduation to set up this printmaking workshop. They want to make their prints relevant to daily life, and offer drawing classes and “Give It a Try!” pottery classes.
Eckert says that creating art is healing – but also addictive. She will keep on finding new avenues for collaboration, to gain visibility for her work, and offering experience classes for the community. Art can feel like a rarefied world, but she wants to fling open the door.

德國新住民童德鴻跟先生定居台中，經營版畫工作室，教導大家版畫、陶藝等藝術創作，也參與社造計畫，在雲林經常可以看到她的作品。
牆上的每件作品，都有一個故事開端，這是童德鴻跟先生在德國藝術交流中蒐集到的個案，全新的紙凹版創作。

"像這一張是一個阿公跟我講的，他小時候他們那時候什麼都沒有，一個禮拜一次他媽媽會做蛋糕，因為他朋友會過來做音樂，他從鑰匙孔偷偷看，有沒有一塊蛋糕還在。"
選定12個主題，三個禮拜時間，童德鴻跟先生用德國沒有的紙凹版技術，創作了系列作品，在德國達姆斯達分享展覽。

"有當地藝廊的老闆特地過來看作品，開幕的時候特地過來看作品，因為他也沒有聽過紙凹板這個東西，對這個滿好奇。"
耳目一新的臺灣當代版畫創作，開啟了臺德文化交流新視野，也是夫婦倆難忘的藝術交流經驗。
兩人專注於版畫創作，也參與社區營造計畫，雲林斗南的烏殼綠竹筍裝置藝術，是他們的作品。

"那時候我們在我家，要用火烤它，用火槍烤、然後噴一種酸，它就慢慢的有這種藍綠的感覺，其實這都是故意的，我們想要的。"
來自德國的童德鴻跟先生是研究所同學，畢業後回到台中老家，經營版畫工作室，為了讓藝術更接地氣，也開設繪畫課、以及動手做做看的陶藝課。
童德鴻說，藝術創作療癒人生，讓人欲罷不能，她會繼續尋求多方合作，拓展能見度，也希望結合社區辦理體驗課程，推開藝術窄門，讓更多人參與。
