"Remember to like, comment and subscribe." Those are words we often hear from YouTubers, but we probably don’t realize that the like or subscribe button that we click on can lead to success for some, like Wu Chi-hsuan. On Saturday, the 30-year-old martial arts instructor became the first YouTuber from Taiwan to hit 10 million subscribers. His channel, called "Tricking," is about how to perform martial arts’ kicks, flips and twists. Let’s see how Wu went from one million subscribers to 10 million in just one year’s time.

Taking off on one leg and flipping 360 degrees in the air, this is 30-year-old Wu Chi-hsuan, who practices tricking, a training discipline that combines kicks with flips and twists from martial arts and gymnastics, as well as breakdance moves. Seven years ago, he set up his YouTube channel, and now he’s the first Youtuber in Taiwan to have over 10 million subscribers.

This short video, in which he teaches a girl how to do a tricking move, has exceeded 500 million views just six months after it was uploaded. In the beginning, he shot and edited all the videos himself. Later, he became an instructor and asked his students to act in stories with simple plots, which became very popular.

I was on the martial arts team from junior high to college, and then when I graduated from college, I joined a company that did stunt coordination. So that’s how I got started. Hitting 10 million subscribers now is definitely an accident, but back when I reached about one million subscribers, I made this YouTube thing my goal.

Going from one million to 10 million took just one year. The success story, however, had its share of trials and tribulations. Wu grew up in a skipped generation family, in which he was raised by his grandmother who sold mochi for a living.

My family has never been well off. When I was in elementary school, I received help from World Vision. My sponsor wrote me a letter, in which he told me to choose what you love, and love what you choose. I think this statement had a really big impact on me.

Today, he makes a monthly average income of NT$150,000. He once had a click-through rate of one billion views in one month, and that gave him an income of NT$600,000.

In the future, reaching 30 million clicks is pretty much the limit, and that’s not bad, because the traffic on my channel is high enough, so it has already allowed me to live a better life, and I can pursue my dreams.

Becoming the Taiwanese YouTuber with the highest number of subscribers and the first Internet celebrity to receive YouTube’s Diamond Creator Award, Wu Chi-hsuan has used his expertise to become not only famous, but realize his dreams.
