2024-03-10

President Tsai Ing-wen attended an event Sunday morning held by the National Union of Chinese Medical Doctors’ Association. Tsai took the opportunity to wish attendees a happy "National Medicine Day," which takes place on March 17. She also expressed her gratitude to traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, who she said have been protecting the health of people on the frontline of healthcare. She thanked them for actively making suggestions to the government, so that it can make policy changes that keep pace with the times.

Tsai Ing-wen
President
National Medicine Day is just around the corner. In addition to extending my wishes to everyone, I would like to thank you all in person for your contributions to Taiwan. Your efforts have allowed Taiwan to continue to progress in the area of traditional Chinese medicine, and maintain its international competitiveness. I’ve been informed that an increasing number of people are being treated with traditional Chinese medicine, and that’s a very good thing. More than 7 million people are now using it. Last year, we set up a traditional Chinese medicine information platform, which has stabilized the supply of medicines in Taiwan.

Chan Yung-chao
Nat’l Union of Chinese Medical Doctors’ Assoc.
There has been a program to develop high-quality traditional Chinese medicine, and to revitalize the industry. Most importantly, this resulted in the development of NRICM101 – also called Chingguan Yihau – to treat people during the COVID pandemic. The program also resulted in the establishment of the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University. This outcome is what the TCM community dreamed about. Thank you to President Tsai Ing-wen, who is the president most supportive of Chinese medicine, the most people-friendly and the most loved by the people.

Chen Chao-tsung
Traditional Chinese medicine practitioner
There was no recognition of it in the past. The administration of President Tsai Ing-wen has been more open to traditional Chinese medicine, and has demonstrated greater recognition of it. President-elect Lai Ching-te will continue where Tsai leaves off, and we in the TCM community will very much support Lai.

Attendees said Tsai’s support for the TCM community had, quote "made her famous worldwide." They praised Tsai’s eight-year program aimed at the revitalization of Taiwan’s TCM industry, saying that its results were being felt at the grassroots level. They also expressed the hope that Lai Ching-te would continue Tsai’s efforts when he takes office.
