260,000 participants join Wings for Life World Run

2024-05-06

Over a quarter of a million people from around the world, including Taipei, started the Wings for Life World Run at the same time last Sunday. This year, the event raised a record 8.1 million euros, or about NT$280 million. All proceeds will go to clinical research on spinal cord injuries.

The race began at 11:00 a.m. UTC, which is 7 p.m. in Taiwan. There was no static finished line. Instead, participants ran away from a virtual “Catcher Car,” which set off 30 minutes after the race began. The “Catcher Car” keeps going until it catches up with each participant. The last man and woman to be caught are named the global champions. This year, participants averaged 11.5 kilometers. Japan’s Tomoya Watanabe took the men’s title with 70.09 kilometers. The women’s title went to Poland’s Dominika Stelmach with 55.02 kilometers.
