Four-day Formosa Railroad Bento Festival kicks off Friday

Get ready for a mouthwatering adventure. The Formosa Railroad Bento Festival will open Friday with 53 vendors and bento boxes from Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, and Malaysia. This is the first festival held since the Taiwan Railways Administration became a corporation. The rail operator hopes to attract 500,000 visitors and generate NT$10 million in revenue.

There were 410,000 participants last year, and we want to break at least 500,000 people this year. Our revenue last year was NT$8.48 million, and we want to surpass NT$10 million this year. Our goal is to generate more profit to support the Taiwan Railway Corporation. Hualien suffered considerable damage from the April 3 earthquake. We hope that this event will help to promote Hualien’s products and tourism industry to the public, to encourage the public to go someplace fun, to have some fun in Hualien.

During the four-day festival, the rail operator will serve up 16 varieties of bento boxes at Taipei Main Station’s main lobby. Expect luxury ingredients like lobster, wagyu beef, and mahi-mahi. There will also be exotic offerings like an octopus bento box from Japan, and a Malaysian bento featuring nasi lemak, a rice dish cooked in coconut milk.

台鐵鐵路便當節即將於6月7日登場，共53家業者參加，除了台灣，還有日本、韓國、馬來西亞便當，今年也是台鐵公司化後，首度舉辦便當節，台鐵預估，應該能吸引50萬人參加，希望營收達到千萬目標。

“去年有41萬人參加，今年我們至少要50萬人的目標，營收去年是848萬，今年我希望能夠突破1000萬，創造更多的利潤，來做為台鐵的後盾。花蓮在這個地震上受到一些創傷，我們也希望透過這個活動，讓花蓮的一些商品，一些旅遊的資訊，能夠到這裡來，跟國人去做一個宣傳，讓國人去好玩的地方，花蓮去玩”

為期4天的鐵路便當節，在台北車站大廳登場，除了有台鐵公司6間餐旅分處推出16款特色便當，龍蝦、和牛、鬼頭刀等食材都入菜。還有來自日本的章魚便當，外盒就像八爪章魚，馬來西亞便當，把椰漿飯端上桌。

Carmakers push SUVs after 64% market share in 2023

SUVs have become a driving force in the auto market, and companies are taking note. After last year’s chip shortage, supply is gradually returning, much to the relief of Taiwan’s car dealers. According to industry figures, SUVs accounted for 64% of all cars sold last year. To meet this demand, the world’s major automakers are all importing their newest offerings.

From behind the curtain, a red car drives slowly onto the stage. It’s a new SUV from a Japanese automaker, hoping to capture the attention of the competitive Taiwanese market.

Auto companies are all going to be working hard this year. Since supply has started to return to normal after the shortage, everyone is releasing lots of new vehicles.

This new model has a commanding look in the front, giving way to sleek lines down the side. Its performance has also been upgraded, just like the other new SUVs from its competitors.

Since the chip shortage of last year has eased, domestic car dealers are rushing to roll out new models. Luxury brands are also releasing new SUVs such as the BMW X2, Benz EQE 300 SUV and Lexus LBX, hoping to capture the family market.

According to industry data, 11,058 mid to large-size SUVs costing within NT$3 million were sold in 2019. 2020 saw a slight dip to 10,046, but by last year, the number had soared to 12,448. Dealers say that SUVs take up a large share of the Taiwanese car market. In fact, they comprised 64% of all passenger vehicle sales last year, an industry survey showed.

Two injured, several vehicles damaged in Keelung landslide

A landslide left two people injured and several vehicles damaged in Keelung on Monday. The collapse happened at 2:28 p.m. at the Beining Road entrance to Chaojing Park. All other people at the scene managed to escape unharmed.

Rocks and soil rush down the slope like a waterfall, sending a driver backing up in a hurry. A bystander moves back as well, filming with her phone as she runs for her life.

In just a few seconds, the landslide leaves the road covered in trees, soil, and boulders, knocking a truck off the road.

The truck driver is left in shock. Despite blood on his clothes and face, he sustained only minor injuries. The landslide struck at 2:28 Monday afternoon, at the Beining Road entrance to Keelung’s Chaojing Park. Four vehicles were crushed in the collapse.

Firefighters climbed over the rubble, to check if anyone was trapped inside the vehicles. According to an eyewitness, nobody got buried under the debris. Everyone in the seven cars and two trucks nearby were able to escape. Two people suffered minor injuries and were sent to the hospital.

At first, just a few rocks fell. There was a young person filming it. Not long after, a rock came down with a bang. It was bigger than my car, and it crushed my car.

Road traffic was blocked by the landslide. Keelung Mayor George Hsieh rushed to the scene from the city council to oversee the recovery operation.

We are trying to understand the scope of the landslide, and how long it will take to restore traffic in one direction.

Firefighters arrived at the site with rescue dogs, and relief personnel were sent from the Keelung and New Taipei governments, to clear away debris with heavy machinery. The landslide affected an area of 1,500 square meters, covering it with 22,000 cubic meters of debris. It remains uncertain how long it will take to restore traffic.

US, Japan, South Korea reaffirm commitment to cross-strait peace and stability

The defense ministers of the U.S., Japan, and South Korea convened on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, to discuss critical regional security concerns. The three officials reaffirmed their commitment to preserving stability in the Indo-Pacific. They also announced plans to launch joint military exercises. Meanwhile, China’s defense minister warned that any party that tries to separate Taiwan from China would cause its own destruction. In a statement, Taiwan’s Presidential Office condemned the remarks, saying that irrational claims would not be accepted by the international community.

The defense ministers of the U.S., Japan and South Korea met on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue security summit in Singapore on Sunday. They discussed topics including the Taiwan Strait, North Korea, and South China Sea. They also reiterated their opposition to any attempt to change the Indo-Pacific region’s status quo by force, underscoring the importance of cross-strait peace and stability. Amid escalating military threats from China and North Korea, the three countries pledged to continue to strengthen their trilateral security alliance.

A post-meeting press statement says that they intend to rotate hosting several high-level security meetings with defense ministers and joint chiefs of staff. They also announced a new multi-domain trilateral exercise called “Freedom Edge” will be held this summer.

While the three countries announced efforts to maintain regional stability, China’s defense chief Dong Jun used his speech on Sunday to direct threats at Taiwan and neighboring nations. He said that any party that tried to separate Taiwan from China would cause its own destruction. In response, Australia Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Richard Marles expressed hope that Japan would join the AUKUS alliance, which currently comprises the U.S., the U.K., and Australia. He also asked for military talks with the CCP, warning China against taking rash action.

Responding to the remarks of China’s defense minister, Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council emphasized that the R.O.C. was a sovereign nation. It stressed that neither side of the strait was subordinate to the other, saying that was an objective fact and the current status quo. Presidential Office Spokesperson Lii Wen said that China was intentionally distorting the position of Taiwan’s government, threatening the use of force and exerting political pressure to exclude Taiwan representatives from the Shangri-La Dialogue. He said Beijing lacked the confidence to engage in dialogue with Taiwan, and that irrational remarks would not be accepted by the international community.

Traditional brickworks converted into comfortable dining experience

Although it’s no longer producing bricks, one traditional kiln in Taichung is still in operation. To introduce more people to the history of brickmaking, the third-generation owner has converted the factory’s kiln into a restaurant. The unusual surroundings not only provide a unique dining experience, but also keep the space cool in summer and warm in winter. Once used to make bricks, the century-old tunnel is now put to another good use.

A chef cooks up a bowl of Shanghai-style fried rice, each grain glistening with delectable oil as it steams from the wok. And that’s not the only classic dish served here.

A mold is lifted to reveal a perfect pyramid of pork, stacked in layers to striking effect. The taste lives up to its appearance, the meat fatty without being greasy and marinated to perfection.

If you look up from the table, you’ll find yourself in some strange surroundings, reminiscent of a bomb shelter. Before it was a restaurant, this tunnel was used to fire bricks.

Some people came to me wanting to shoot wedding photos, so my dad and I figured this kiln was a selling point. Otherwise it would have been torn down, so we converted the kiln into a restaurant to attract customers.

The arched kiln is 78 meters long and 10 meters wide, with 22 openings. It used to be able to fire 250,000 bricks at once. More than a century later, it’s no longer used to make bricks, leaving the third-generation owner struggling to think of how to carry on the tradition. It was by chance that the restaurant came to be.

Since it needed to trap the heat inside when firing bricks, the walls are very thick. The temperature is very stable inside. When it’s hot out, inside it’s cool, and when it’s cold out, it feels warm inside.

The design of the kiln maintains its internal temperature, providing an unexpected perk for the restaurant. Although brickmaking is becoming a thing of the past, inviting diners inside can give this old factory a newfound spark.

Dog care home in Tainan offers much-needed help for older dogs

More and more people in Taiwan are getting pets, and caring for older pets is becoming a big issue. A care home for older dogs in Tainan is providing much-needed help for dogs of advancing years. It provides weeks or months of care for dogs with health issues, even until they pass away. Its owner was inspired to start the business when he found that it was hard to juggle his job with caring for an aging dog.

Ms. Yang took the HSR from Hsinchu to Tainan specially to get photos taken with her dog “Patter” and enjoy some quality time together.

Dogs are like children. They need professional care. If we can’t even take good care of ourselves, they can’t get good care.

Patter is 16 years old, and six years ago it had a difficult-to-treat illness. Ms. Yang sent it to this doggy care home for special care. A long stay is not cheap, but for many owners of older dogs, no expense can be spared for their furry children: professional care is what’s most important.

Ms. Chiu’s dog Ah-fu spent six months here, before passing away. She was able to give it a relaxed time in its final days, which was a big comfort.

This care home for older dogs is run by Chiang Yi-hung. His focus on these elderly friends was inspired by having an older dog of his own, who lived to 16.

I had a Labrador who was 16, and actually, to be honest it really was getting old. When I went to work, it was hard to also take care of it day to day.

Chiang couldn’t find a pet hotel that would help, which made him decide to open his own establishment, specially aimed at older dogs.

It’s not just about caring for them. When you realize an older dog has an issue, it’s usually been going on for weeks or even months. When you notice it, it’s probably too late. So you should perhaps pay attention to some very subtle signs.

Chiang has even designed tools to help infirm dogs to get out for walks. This insulation equipment is his own design, as is this heating pad. He also prepares special ready meals perfect for older dogs. Older people need care, and our furry friends are no different.
