Lai thanks Nvidia CEO for giving Taiwan its first supercomputer at Computex

2024-06-04

The largest computer and technology trade show in Asia Computex opened its doors on Tuesday, with the attendance of big industry names. Among the participants were Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Advanced Micro Devices CEO Lisa Su and Intel CEO Patrick Gelsinger. President Lai Ching-te attended the opening ceremony, giving a speech in which he thanked Huang for giving Taiwan its first supercomputer.

On the opening day of Computex, the first stop for Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang was the booth for Quanta Cloud Technology. There, he met Quanta Computer founder Barry Lam, and company Vice President Leung Chee-chun, who presented him with an award for best partner.

They signed table tennis paddles for each other, as Huang was a ping pong champ in his younger years.

The exhibition’s highlights focused on AI computing system solutions, components, battery storage applications and smart mobility.

Jensen Huang
Nvidia CEO
Of course Taiwan is a very large site for us already. Taipei, Hsinchu… We have hundreds of people. Over the next several years we will build a new facility so that we can hire at least 1,000 engineers. We look forward to expanding our site here. And I’m very much looking forward to finding a nice site.

Whether Huang would meet with President Lai Ching-te was a source of much speculation. In the end, Lai attended the event with economics minister J. W. Kuo, and Taipei Computer Association head Paul Peng. During his speech, Lai thanked Nvidia and TSMC.

Lai Ching-te
President
I would like to publicly express my gratitude to Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang for donating our first supercomputer to us. I would also like to thank TSMC for committing to finance some of the annual operating costs.

Back in 2020, Nvidia had set up a supercomputer at I-Shou University. Now, the company plans to expand its headquarters with a sizeable investment as the world watches for AI developments in Taiwan.
