Rail operator’s R200 locomotive enters service

The Taiwan Railway Corporation’s R200 locomotives are in service. Built by Swiss company Stadler Rail, the diesel-electric locomotives were launched Wednesday, after completing a year of testing and adjustments. They will be used for freight and military transport, improving safety and lowering costs. And rail fans take note. R200 merchandise is now available at TRC stores nationwide.

The locomotive starts slowly, pulling eight cars loaded with marble, military trucks, and shipping containers. The Taiwan Railway Corporation’s R200 entered service on Wednesday. Rail fans gathered bright and early to ensure a front-row seat at the launch.

The R200 is a high-performance diesel-electric locomotive supplied by a Swiss company. It has a powerful 2,700-horsepower motor. It also exceeds the Taiwan government’s standards for mobile-source pollutants. The R200 is Taiwan’s first locomotive equipped with peripheral cameras, which give views surrounding the vehicle. It’s also got engine overheat protection and automatic fire suppression, improving safety for train crews.

At the locomotive’s launch event, rail fans flocked to booths selling R200 merchandise. The first 100 people at the event received a limited-edition R200 EasyCard.

In the future, the R200 will be used for freight, military transport, and other special purposes. It will help the Taiwan Railway Corporation improve its freight services.

The rail operator said that in the future, the R200 will be deployed at the Hualien and Changhua locomotive depots, undertaking freight transport along the Eastern and Western main lines. It’s expected to improve the safety and efficiency of freight transport, while reducing transportation costs.

台鐵"R200型柴電機車"花蓮首航鐵道迷一睹新車風采

台鐵公司最新R200型柴電機車，歷經1年的測試與調整，在週三正式上線投入營運，超高規格的配置，台鐵希望未來能提升載貨安全及效率，降低運輸成本。至於鐵路迷敲碗期盼的周邊商品，也同步在台鐵門市及網路商店開賣，讓民眾能收藏迷你版的新車頭。

列車緩緩啟動，牽引著8輛貨車，分別載著大理石、軍用卡車以及貨櫃進場，台鐵新添購的新型機車頭，在週三這一天正式亮相首航，吸引大批鐵道迷早早到場卡位。

這款R200車型是瑞士鐵路公司所生產的高性能柴電機車，搭載2700匹馬力的強大引擎，還有優於環保署現行的移動污染源排放標準，R200也是台鐵首次配備周邊攝影機的車種，可以查看車輛周邊環景影像；加上引擎過熱保護及自動噴射滅火裝置，都為司機員提供更高安全保障。

現場除了能一賭新車風采，還有販賣周邊的攤位，多款印有R200Q版圖樣的商品一一陳列在桌上。前100位到場觀禮的民眾，還能獲得限量R200造型的一卡通。

台鐵表示，未來R200將配置於花蓮及彰化機務段，擔起東部幹線及西部幹線貨運重任，希望能有效提高貨運運輸安全及效率，降低運輸成本。
