And now for bad news on the inflation front. The government’s CPI, or consumer price index, rose 2.52% in July from a year earlier. That’s the biggest annual increase in five months. Let’s hear from the government’s statistics agency.

Due to the impact of Typhoon Gaemi, the price increase for fruits and vegetables was greater in July compared to June. The cost of dining out was also higher, leading to a 4.57% overall rise in food prices, more than the rate in the previous month. Vegetable replanting and harvesting will take time, at least four weeks. Fruit will take even longer. So the impact of the typhoon will be even more pronounced in August compared to July.
The so-called core CPI, which excludes fruit, vegetables, and energy costs, rose by 1.84% annually in July. Looking ahead to August, officials say food prices will continue to expand. But overall costs should be stable, with the core CPI remaining below the central bank’s target of 2%.
