17-year-old table tennis player wins silver for Taiwan at Paralympics

Taiwan has bagged another medal at the Paris Paralympics, in table tennis. 17-year-old player Chen Po-yen has won a silver in the Class 11 Men’s singles event. Though Chen had his sights set on gold, he ultimately lost the final against South Korea, after putting up a tremendous fight.
For Chen Po-yen’s final game, his coach Wei Chun-ta wrote two words on his palms “focus” and “gold.” A spell in a way to help Chen to victory.
The Taiwanese table tennis player bagged the first set 11-3. But he was up against a formidable opponent: Kim Gi-tae from South Korea, who previously won bronze at the Hangzhou Asian Para Games and gold at the World Para Table Tennis Championships. Kim staged a comeback, winning the second set 15-13. Then it was 11-7, and 11-9 to win his second and third sets, snatching gold and forcing Chen to settle for silver.

I did my best. It is a pity though. Especially the second set, and my performance after it. Maybe I was too passive, I kept retreating without pushing forward.
This was the 17-year-old’s first time at the Paralympics, and he managed to clinch a silver. There’s still plenty of time for him to try for gold again at the event, to complete a planned collection of three golds out of three at the Asian Para Games, the Virtus Global Games and the Paralympics.

To be able to nab a silver medal at such a high-profile competition as the Paralympics is really an encouragement for Po-yen. Props to him! Po-yen has progressed greatly in the past two years. Moving forward, he also knows where his technique shortcomings are, and the areas that have room for improvement. He’s been working hard in order to keep growing.
Of Taiwan’s five medals at the Paris Paralympics, four have been in table tennis, where every athlete competing has bagged a medal: three silvers and one gold.

帕運桌球小將陳柏諺 不敵韓國選手奪銀牌

巴黎帕運會台灣17歲桌球新星陳柏諺，在男子單打MS11級金牌戰，1:3不敵韓國選手金基泰，與金牌擦肩而過，不過，生涯第一次登上帕運殿堂，陳柏諺就摘下銀牌，已經是一鳴驚人。
陳柏諺一路來到了金牌戰，教練魏君達在他手掌上寫，專注，加上金三個字，希望他能完全投入，拿到最終的勝利。
陳柏諺第一局以11:3先聲奪人，不過，韓國對手金基泰，是杭州亞帕運銅牌、世錦賽金牌，實力也不容忽視，很快就調整回來，第二局15:13艱苦扳平後，乘勝追擊，再以11:7、11:9勝出，連下3局3:1逆轉獲勝奪下金牌，陳柏諺則是收下銀牌。

“就盡力而為吧就，覺得蠻可惜的，第二局蠻可惜的，後面的狀態，可能就打得太被動了，可能就一直往後退沒有向前靠”
17歲的陳柏諺，第一次站上帕運舞台，就拿下銀牌，雖然沒能完成亞帕運、世界運動會以及帕運三金的大滿貫，不過未來的路還很長。

“能夠第一次參加奧(帕)運，這個這麼大的等級的賽事就拿到銀牌，很鼓勵柏諺，很恭喜柏諺，我也相信，柏諺他應該在這兩年都有很大的成長，接下來當然他也知道，自己的技術的缺失在哪裡，缺點在哪裡，這個也都是一直在不斷努力，要需要成長的地方”
