NGO to speak up for Taiwan outside UN Building

The Taiwan United Nations Alliance is sending a group to the US this month, to speak up for Taiwan during the UN General Assembly. The group will hold six days of activities in New York and Washington DC. Through citizen diplomacy, they hope to let the world see Taiwan.

The Taiwan United Nations Alliance will be heading to New York and Washington DC on Sept. 12, to speak up for Taiwan on the sidelines of the 79th UN General Assembly.

Besides using power to achieve peace, we must also use diplomacy to achieve peace. And this diplomacy is not just limited to governmental organizations. Those are just one part of the bigger picture. These efforts extend to NGOs and individual lawmakers.

The group has six days of activities on the schedule. Besides raising awareness of their cause, they will also celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival at a Taiwanese language school in Washington DC. But the main focus of the trip is UN Resolution 2758. Ahead of their departure, association Chair Lin Yi-min met with Minister Lin Chia-lung to send an open letter to UN Secretary-General António Guterres. The NGO is present at many UN-related events, including the World Health Assembly in Geneva and the UN General Assembly in the US. Taking diplomacy into their own hands, they speak up for Taiwan on the world stage.

Especially since the UN’s motto is “Leave No One Behind,” the people of Taiwan should also not be left behind.

We went to the WHO, but they didn’t let us in. We still provided a lot of medical resources, and face masks. Taiwan has been helping out all over the world, assisting every country. We hope the world can see Taiwan.

第79屆聯合國大會即將於紐約開議，台灣聯合國協進會（TAIUNA）宣達團9月12日將啟程前進紐約、華府替台灣發聲！為期6天行程，包括舉辦青年營，造訪談華盛頓特區的台語學校，倡導「人人皆外交官」精神，讓世界看見台灣。

為期6天的宣達行程，除了將國際意識向下扎根，宣達團也會到訪美國華盛頓的台語學校共度中秋。這趟主要訴求回應國際對聯合國2758號決議文的重視，出發前理事長林逸民和外交部長林佳龍會面，並寄出公開信給聯合國秘書長古特瑞斯。不論是在日內瓦的WHA或是在美國舉辦的聯合國大會，處處都能看見宣達團身影，宣揚台灣民間力量，以實際行動發揮人人都是外交官的精神。

Young baseball players received at Presidential Office

On Monday morning, President Lai Ching-te received three junior baseball teams at the Presidential Office. The young athletes were from two public schools in Taoyuan, as well as the national junior baseball team. The president, who is a self-proclaimed baseball fan, took the occasion to commend the young baseball champions, and promised to do more for sports during his administration.

To receive three teams that played for the country, whether as president or baseball fan, is an immense honor and very exciting.

The baseball team of Hsin Ming Junior High School in Taoyuan was the champion at the LLB Junior League Baseball this year; while Guishan Elementary School’s baseball team, also from Taoyuan, had won silver at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The third player, representing the national team, had won bronze at the U-15 Baseball World Cup. Their success was commended by the president, who is a massive baseball fan himself.

Each and every one of you young baseball players is Taiwan’s hero on the baseball field. The country shines because of you. I am a fan of the Uni-Lions. In fact I had bought a ticket to watch the first game of the CPBL.

Lai revealed that as a long-time baseball fan, he attended Taiwan’s very first professional baseball game back in 1990. In the past as the mayor of Tainan, and later as premier, he had always supported baseball. He said as president he’ll do the same.

Now that I’m president, I’ll support baseball as president. We’re establishing a new ministry for sports and sports development, not only to promote sports among all citizens, but to develop the sports industry.

In addition to honoring the national champions, President Lai took the occasion to spotlight a new sports ministry in the works, which will aim to promote sports throughout the country.

50-year-old Shenkeng mooncake shop mechanizes for Mid-Autumn demand

As the Mid-Autumn Festival gift-giving season arrives, a 50-year-old cake shop in Shenkeng, New Taipei, is flooded with gift boxes. The shop has received a massive influx of orders from department stores, tech companies, and financial institutions. Despite having 20 employees working overtime every day, they are still struggling to keep up. They have not only increased their workforce but also added mechanized production lines. On average, they need to produce at least 130,000 mooncakes each day.

The pineapple cakes are pressed into square shapes, dipped in crushed almond, and then set to harden.

The cakes are placed in the oven, baked at 150°C for 20 minutes.

A delicious smell bursts out of the oven the moment the cakes are taken out. Pineapple cakes aren’t the only hot sellers.

During the Mid-Autumn Festival rush, the daily production of green bean cakes has surged from 5,000 to over 10,000. At times like this, handing over the complex packaging tasks to machines makes a difference. In just one minute, a machine can package 30 individual green bean cakes.

One employee places green bean cakes into the machine, while another is in charge of packing them into boxes. They work against the clock, making sure the boxes are filled quickly and efficiently.

In the shipping area, the staff sorts the cakes into categories and swiftly packs them into boxes. With 20 employees in the factory already stretched thin during the busy season, they’ve had to bring in five additional workers to help. The surge in orders from department stores and tech companies means they’re processing hundreds of orders.

This year, many corporate orders are picked up directly from our store. This is likely because companies want to collect and deliver the gifts themselves. As a result, our store’s order volume has surged, with growth of at least 10% to 20% compared to previous years. The key challenge this year is the pressure on our workforce. We’ve added more mechanized equipment to help compensate for the shortage of manpower.

I started buying from them when I first entered the workforce because my family lived near their Muzha store. We would buy their products for holidays and special occasions, and sometimes we’d also use them as gifts.

Despite the doubling of costs for egg yolks and imported butter, the business is committed to keeping prices frozen, aiming to ensure that consumers can enjoy the festivities without added costs.

Tech industry pioneers named ITRI Laureates

Five tech industry pioneers were honored on Friday, Sept. 6, by the Industrial Technology Research Institute. They were Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang; Chair and CEO of AMD Lisa Su; Chair and CEO of Acer Jason Chen; GlobalWafers CEO Doris Hsu; and Superintendent of Taichung Veterans General Hospital Dr. Chen Shih-ann. The new ITRI Laureates were decorated by Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim. Let’s hear from them.

Among the five new ITRI Laureates named this year are Chair and CEO of Acer Jason Chen, GlobalWafers CEO Doris Hsu and Superintendent of Taichung Veterans General Hospital Dr. Chen Shih-ann. There’s also two household names.

They are Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and Lisa Su, CEO of AMD. Joining the ceremony from the US over video call, they shared their visions for Taiwan’s AI industry in their acceptance speeches.

In her remarks, Vice President Hsiao Bi-Khim commended the laureates for their distinct contributions. Nvidia’s and AMD’s expansion in Taiwan has deepened; while Dr. Chen Shih-ann had contributed to smart healthcare. Jason Chen of Acer promoted international exchanges at APEC and Doris Hsu of GlobalWafers has long been a collaborator with ITRI. On the same day, the vice president also took a look at an exhibition on Taiwan’s R&D. She said cooperative projects between the government, academia and industry, had let Taiwan be seen on the global stage.

Technological prowess is national competitiveness. For a long time ITRI has served as an incubator of technologies and the center of Taiwanese technology, and played a pivotal role in advancing Taiwan’s industries.

The five new laureates were selected for their initiative and grit under a stringent criteria. ITRI hopes that by recognizing their contributions, they’ll continue to break new grounds for Taiwan.

Soap opera star wins gold medal for perfect mala chili stew

Soap opera star Jerry Yu has won a gold medal for his cookery skills! The actor recently clinched gold at an international cooking contest in Singapore. He’s well known both for his acting credits as well as his frequent appearances on cooking shows. His quest to perfect his mala chili stew recipe has struck a chord with many fans – and it seems to have won over the judges of the contest too.

Purple and pink flowers garnish a plate. On it is a tricycle with a wooden crate filled with sweetcorn, mushrooms, and other hotpot ingredients. The crate is glazed with stewing sauce and rounded out with chili peppers. This authentic Taiwanese flavor won the judges’ hearts at an international contest in Singapore, clinching a gold medal.

I was so nervous and excited during the competition! It was an unfamiliar place and it’s so long since I last went to Singapore. So I couldn’t find lots of ingredients that we use all the time. So it was a bit of a hair-raising experience, for real! But it was OK, I managed, and brought the gold medal home! I’m always at home when I’m not working. I’m a stay-at-home guy, and what do I do at home? I love cooking! I’m always experimenting with food I like at home, and sharing it with my friends and family.

This champion chef wears a lot of hats. His day job is acting, and he’s appeared on many popular soap operas and cooking shows. Even when he’s just a sous chef, you can see from his first chop that this ain’t his first rodeo.

One time, I spent about two weeks in the kitchen researching chili sauce and chili stew. I was constantly trying out recipes, tweaking it here and there. I asked my friends and family to try it out, and to give me notes about where it fell short. And I kept tweaking until everyone said it was rich and spicy in the right way, not too salty, not too heavy. And when everyone enjoyed it, I said, “Oh my god! It’s there!”

Jerry Yu has his eye on the restaurant market, and hopes to introduce his fans to his famous chili stew recipe one day soon.

Disaster survivor mason volunteers home-repair skills

In November, 2023, a fire in Tainan destroyed the home of Chen Tien-ting and his 12 family members, leaving them suddenly homeless. At that time, the Tainan Labor Charity Group helped them repair their house. Chen was deeply moved by the help he received. Eight months later, he joined the Labor Charity Group himself as a volunteer. Transitioning from being a disaster victim to a volunteer, he now uses his masonry skills to help other fire victims.

Wearing a construction helmet and volunteer uniform, Chen and his team are preparing to lay a new cement floor in a house that was damaged by the fire.

They pour the bucket of mortar onto the damaged floor and use a trowel to smooth it out. Wiping the sweat pouring down their faces with a towel they continue their work.

In November 2023 a major fire in Tainan’s Annan District destroyed the home of Chen Tien-ting and his 12 family members. The Labor Charity Group stepped in to help repair their house. Eight months later, Chen decided to join the Labor Charity Group, using his expertise in masonry to assist other disaster victims.

I’m very grateful to the Labor Charity Group for helping our family. We were already in a difficult situation, and having someone come to help us was a great relief. Once the work was done, I promised to return the favor when I had the time. I feel a sense of accomplishment and positive energy from this experience—it’s something that’s hard to put into words.

This is Chen’s second time volunteering. A group of people dressed in orange shirts and fully equipped has arrived in Madou District, Tainan, to help repair homes for victims of the fire.

The Tainan Labor Charity Group sacrifices their own free time to serve the community. This group of workers contributes their labor and compassion without seeking anything in return. Driven by a genuine sense of goodwill, they find fulfillment and a deep sense of satisfaction in their work, even without a wage.
