Typhoon Krathon strikes Orchid Island and Green Island

Eastern Taiwan is already feeling the effects of the typhoon. On Monday Orchid Island and Green Island saw waves measuring 5 to 8 meters tall. Ferries between the islands and Taitung have been suspended, and will only resume once the storm dissipates.
Huge waves crash the shores of Orchid Island, measuring as high as 8 meters. They’re caused by strong winds measuring up to 11 on the Beaufort scale, and seem to defy gravity.
On the other side of the coast, a stream flows downhill. Once it hits a rock, the water is blown upward by the strong winds, and dissipates.
The heavy storms brought by Typhoon Krathon are not to be overlooked. On Monday, Orchid Island became the first place in Taiwan to implement work and class suspensions.
Up north on Green Island, also off the east coast of Taiwan, breaking swell waves reach almost two storeys high.
The township’s patrol vehicle went around the island, finding rocks and broken twigs everywhere on the road. Along with stormwater runoffs, the driver must proceed carefully.
Some portions of the roads are already flooding and muddying.
Nanliao Street, the main street of Green Island, is completely empty. Shops and lodges have all closed in anticipation of the typhoon.

Where we are the waves are around 4 meters high. The patrol vehicle is making a round-trip in the island. By noon where rogue waves are expected to crash onshore, we’ll close off the roads. Green Island really is the hometown of typhoons. We grew up in fear of typhoons, and even though we’re still scared, we’ll take stronger precautions.
As Typhoon Krathon approaches, residents of outlying islands are already taking precautions. Ferries between the islands and Taitung have been suspended until Krathon leaves.

山陀兒颱風來勢洶洶，首當其衝的綠島、蘭嶼，風雨逐漸增強，浪高甚至已經有5到8公尺，威力相當驚人，在綠島的部分，陣風10級，而蘭嶼更是颳起最大11級陣風，就連瀑布的水，也被大風吹到直接往天上衝，水流瞬間變成水霧，噴散開來，成了罕見的特殊景觀。
蘭嶼岸邊掀起驚濤駭浪，巨浪猛烈拍打上岸，濺起大量水花，浪高接近8公尺，瞬間最大11級的強風，帶著瀑布的水流，抵抗地心引力。
上方的瀑布，水還是往下流，下方的部分，卻是往天上衝，流水直接變成水霧，瞬間噴散，場面相當驚人。
山陀兒挾帶強風豪雨，威力不容小覷，蘭嶼也在30號這一天，成了全台最先停班停課的地區。
除了蘭嶼，同樣是東部離島的綠島地區，風浪也十分驚人，將近兩層樓高的長浪，一波接一波。
鄉公所的車輛，不斷繞著島巡視，只見路面上，滿滿碎石、枯枝，相當危險，沿路山坡還出現"時雨瀑"，車子得小心翼翼開過。
有部分路段開始積水，馬路變成黃色小河，佈滿泥濘。
過去綠島最熱鬧的南寮大街上，一片空蕩蕩，店家、旅宿業者早就因應颱風來襲，通通關起大門，忙抗颱。

“我們那裡浪高差不多4公尺有啦。公務車去環島，那中午可能會在瘋狗浪容易上岸的地方，會把道路封閉起來。我們綠島真的是颱風故鄉，我們都已經被颱風嚇大的啦，那嚇還是會嚇，但我們防颱措施都會比較加強。”
山陀兒颱風來勢洶洶，居民嚴陣以待，防颱總動員。位在「颱風搖滾區」的綠島、蘭嶼，風雨逐漸增強，往返台東的船班，全都取消，對外交通何時恢復，就看山陀兒的移動速度。
