Wordwave Festival, a celebration of Chinese-language literature

The Wordwave Festival is a celebration of Chinese-language literature that’s being held in Taipei. The shindig aims to connect Mandarin-language authors with readers. This year’s theme is "Childhood." Festival organizers have invited over 60 writers to give lectures and read excerpts from their books. Our very own FTV reporter Stephany Yang has read up on the topic and gives us the scoop!

Writers read excerpts from their books aloud and share their favorite childhood memories. This year’s Wordwave Festival theme is "Childhood." Organizers have set up six major exhibition areas, featuring books from different eras. Some are out of print. Organizers hope they will elicit memories of childhood and connect people of various ages.

By re-reading many works written by authors you read when you were young, you are able to connect with your younger self. We hope to have a cross-generational theme. What are the differences in childhood for a 70-year-old and 17-year-old? Can we share with everyone our feelings about childhood or what we miss about it? Or share the power you have gained from creative works at the Wordwave Festival?

Nearly 40 reading activities will be held, along with speeches from writers and editors, and talks by professionals from various artistic fields.

We have invited many writers to give more than a dozen very special lectures. They are cross-generational lectures. We will not only hold them in Huashan, but also in other places.

Hosted by Taiwan Cultural and Creative Development Foundation, The Wordwave Festival has been held for 12 years. This year’s edition will be held at the Huashan 1914 Creative Park and other areas around Taipei until Dec. 1.

華山文創園區策辦「華文朗讀節」邁向第12年，今年以「跳進小時候」為主题，邀請逾60位作家來演講及朗讀他們的書。一起來看看!

作家們朗讀書中的摘錄，分享他們最喜歡的童年回憶。今年華文朗讀節以「跳進小時候」為主題，設置六大展區，展示不同時代的書籍，包含絕版書籍。主辦單位希望能喚起民眾對童年的回憶，並將不同年齡層的人們串聯起來。

Taiwan’s champion baseball team receives presidential welcome

A heroes’ parade was held by the Presidential Office and the GACC on Tuesday afternoon, to celebrate Taiwan’s champion baseball team. Some 50,000 spectators joined the event to cheer for the national sports heroes, who were later received at the Presidential Office. When the team arrived, they were welcomed with a sword salute and greeted by the president and vice president themselves.

A trail of golden confetti follows Taiwan’s champion baseball players at the hero’s parade. Some 50,000 spectators gathered in Taipei’s Guanqian Road to celebrate.

The first vehicle carried Team Manager Tseng Hao-ju and Kao Chih-kang. And the next—fan favorites for both their skills and good looks.

Team Taiwan Captain Chen Chieh-hsien, who’s on the right, stole the spotlight by casually running his fingers through his hair. Beside him, Lyle Lin rocks mirrored sunglasses and a baseball cap worn backward. The unofficial team anthem blasted through the crowd.

The crowd went wild with the music, waving placards and making various hand gestures. At the front row, cheerleaders led the crowd. The military even dispatched psychological warfare vehicles, for the very first time, to blast the song throughout the parade.

The team arrived at the Presidential Office at 4 p.m., and were welcomed with a sword salute, then greeted by President Lai Ching-te, Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim and other officials.

I’m so happy right now, I can’t put it into words. It’s like how I felt when I got married, or when I welcomed my daughter-in-law when my son got married, I was so happy. All of you are the nation’s honor. Because of you, the international community now knows that Taiwan not only has semiconductors. Taiwan also has baseball.

I never thought that we could use our baseball skills to let the world see Taiwan. Neither have I ever imagined that my generation of players could win the world championship. But what I want to say is, I want to thank everyone in my generation. The world has seen the fruits of our efforts.

It’s a surprising but well-deserved win. The president presented the team captain with a Taiwan-shaped plushie. Then, the attendees all danced along to the unofficial anthem to celebrate.

Ninja hand signs and reverse psychology at Premier12

Team Taiwan achieved victory in the Premier12 thanks to hours of hard work and training. But some baseball fans say that they also did their bit to help the team, through paranormal channels. Some YouTubers weaponized reverse psychology, wearing Team Japan merch to the game to provoke a Taiwan win. Another baseball superfan made use of ninja hand signs at the ballpark to send winning vibes to the baseball players.

Sharp-eyed baseball fans noticed a spectator at Taiwan’s final game in Tokyo made ninja hand signs through the match. Just as he made the horse sign, Taiwan Captain Chen Chieh-hsien hit the winning home run.

A friend told me not to be greedy, to settle for a double. I said, “No way, we need a home run.” So I linked my fingers, and just as I made the sign, Chen Chieh-hsien shot the ball to the back. I was shocked. I felt I couldn’t break the sign, so I held it. Of course I’m thrilled. When he came out we were all jumping around!

Hung Chun-ming is a real estate agent passionate about baseball. He spent a significant amount of money to watch Team Taiwan in Tokyo with friends and attended every single game. His presence didn’t go unnoticed in Japan.

Another baseball fan told us that perhaps we should just sit and watch the game without making weird hand gestures. The fan insisted that we stop, and that we just watch the rest of the game. We were polite and said “OK.” The price of the travel, admission and accommodation was really costly. But if I hadn’t taken this opportunity I would’ve regretted it my whole life.

Another baseball fan, YouTuber Tainan Josh, cast his own lucky spell for the team. Tired of his team always losing, he decided to wear a Japanese jersey to ensure a Taiwan victory. In a similar vein, YouTuber Tsai A-ga showed up in Japan with a Japan banner, in an unusual weaponization of reverse psychology.

Theme park fish gets stuck with its jaw constantly open

Did you know that it’s not just humans who can dislocate a joint? A fish in a Taiwanese theme park has done it too. The giant grouper at Farglory Ocean Park has been swimming around with its mouth constantly open. It dislocated its jaw, and despite treatment that temporarily fixed it, the jaw fell open again. Park keepers say the fish is still able to eat normally with its jaw open. But the strange sight is attracting lots of tourists to the aquarium. Meanwhile, another grouper in the tank has an equally strange situation going on with its eyes…

Walk into the aquarium and you’re greeted by this giant grouper swimming past. Why is its mouth always open? Is it saying hello, or eating?

The children in the audience are stunned, and some tourists have come here just for this.

It received treatment and was normal for a time. But it’s in the state you see now because its jaw got out of place again, which means the situation now is that its mouth is always open. But its open mouth does not prevent it from taking in food.

The giant grouper is 1.5 meters long. As a young fish, it opened its mouth too wide one time, and dislocated its lower jaw. It underwent surgery and was able to close its mouth. But later the jaw opened again. One of its companions is also quite unusual-looking: what’s the deal with these popping eyes?

Its eyes protrude because, as I just said, of the ions in the water. The osmotic pressure of the water causes it. It may also be because of a microbial infection. After some time we may also give this fish some treatment.

The two groupers have unwittingly become stars of the Farglory Ocean Park. But the conditions may not always be easy on the fish themselves. The park says it will give the fish all the treatment they need to live a happy life.

Premier Cho and cabinet members attend trade group brunch meeting

On Tuesday morning, Premier Cho Jung-tai and cabinet members met with Taiwan’s business leaders, during which they exchanged views on promoting Taiwan’s economic growth. Cho mentioned plans to upgrade the Sports Administration and to increase salaries for government workers. Meanwhile the trade association chair Thomas Wu touched on potential systemic risks posed by the incoming US administration.

On Tuesday morning, Premier Cho Jung-tai and members of the cabinet attended a brunch meeting hosted by the Chinese National Association of Industry and Commerce, Taiwan. The recent baseball win was widely referenced.

Personally speaking, it’s a day to drive economic growth and to witness the gold medal. After the bill to form the Ministry of Sports is passed by the Legislative Yuan, we hope to promote sports among people and onto the world stage, and to develop our sports industry.

The spirit of perseverance and teamwork—I believe this is Team Taiwan’s greatest strength. Those of us in industry and commerce will do the same. We’ll reach a consensus and work with the government. We’ll lean into Taiwan’s formidable strength and realize President Lai’s vision to turn Taiwan into an economic powerhouse.

The trade association chair Thomas Wu said businesses are happy to work with the government to drive economic growth in Taiwan. The target this year is a 4% GDP growth.

Next year, we’ll continue to raise the salary of civil servants and military personnel by 3%. I’d like to call on all the leaders in industry and business to also help our laborers.

Our wage increases have always been more than 3%. When a company earns money, it’s only right to share it with employees. Of course we’re behind this.

Wu said businesses are happy to raise wages, but he also cautioned against potential risks posed by the new US government.

After Donald Trump becomes president of the US, the uncertainty surrounding the new administration’s policies will pose great challenges and risks to global financial markets and economic development. But Taiwan will still be in an advantageous position.

Wu said although Taiwan occupies a good position, the government must get ready for uncertainties.

Esteemed Taitung doctor urges young physicians eastward

An esteemed Taitung doctor is urging young physicians to consider a move to Taitung, to support the medical system there. Wang Kuang-te is superintendent of Taitung MacKay Memorial Hospital, and a cardiac surgery expert. He moved to take a job in Taitung 26 years ago, when there were few Taiwanese doctors in the coastal city. Many years later, he has helped turn the situation around, although there still exist big regional differences in the quality of medical care across Taiwan. Wang hopes that more young doctors will hear his call and take the plunge to be in service.

Cardiologist Wang Kuang-te listens patiently to the patient in the clinic. Then he heads to an inpatient ward, and gently tells a patient waiting for surgery the things he needs to be aware of.

In the operating room, Wang’s expression turns serious. Every surgery is potentially life-changing, and there’s no room for error. Years ago, despite better prospects for career progression in Taipei, he decided to come and work here in Taitung.

I saw how, back then, most of the doctors in Taitung were foreigners. And I thought that was strange. “Where have all the Taiwanese doctors gone?” I felt very sad about that and also very shocked. There was nothing here in Taitung. There were really severe shortages. So when I came to Taitung 26 years ago, it was difficult to put to use everything I had learned in Taipei.

I know that because of his reputation, many patients now come all the way from the west of Taiwan to receive surgery from him.

Wang is an authority on cardiac catheterization, and his reputation attracts patients from far-flung locations. After many years in medicine, Wang has one memory that still haunts him.

A young person had a heart attack and was sent to our hospital. I spent almost a whole evening there, trying to save the patient, but in the end they passed away. And I thought, “How can it be that patients on the east coast, despite paying NHI fees like anybody, receive care that is so lacking compared to that in the west?”

This event prompted Wang to work even harder to raise finances for Taitung’s medical system, and to improve their facilities. His only aim is to provide a better lifeline for patients, and spare them the difficult journey to the west coast for better treatment.

At that time, the Christian Hospital didn’t have facilities like NMR machines. So I had no choice but to go all the way to NTU Hospital. Today, of course, we’ve had the NMR machine for years already, and it’s a great blessing to the region, of course.

Locals sometimes call Wang “the guardian deity of Taitung health.” As superintendent of his hospital, he wants to welcome in fresh blood, to work together to protect the health of the community.
