Windblown sand caused by strong northeast monsoon affects Hualien residents

2024-12-08

Every autumn and winter, as the northeast monsoon picks up, windblown sand is a phenomenon that often occurs at the mouths of Liwu, Hualien, and Xiuguluan rivers along the east coast. Large amounts of sand and dust are picked up by the strong winds, forming windblown sand.

Experts say that this is due to dried up riverbeds and very light sand. When the wind blows, the sand and dust will be scattered everywhere. Although the Hualien County Government has planted trees at the mouths of the rivers in recent years in an attempt to reduce windblown sand, the results seem to be limited, and authorities still don’t know how long it will take for the situation to improve.
