Taipei City hosts Rubik’s Cube competition that draws 500 students

2024-12-08

Taipei hosted a Rubik’s Cube competition for elementary and middle school students over the weekend. Held on the 50th anniversary of the cube’s invention, the event drew 500 students from nearly 100 schools. Parents were also present to cheer on their kids, and expressed great support for their kids’ interest in the timeless toy, which they said helps emotional stability and concentration.

The sides of a Rubik’s Cube turning quickly under his nimble fingers, the student is deeply absorbed in the puzzle. The competition has not yet begun, but these students are busy warming up to sharpen their skills.

Competitor
Before I sleep at night, and while walking home on school days, I play with it. It’s always in my book bag.

Competitor
It involves the hands, eyes, brain and ears all working together at the same time. The ears listen to the judges speaking. The hands are turning the cube, and the brain is thinking how to turn it.

As part of efforts to promote the STEAM approach to education – which incorporates creative thinking into the sciences – the Taipei Department of Education hosted this Rubik’s Cube competition over the weekend. The panel of judges from the National Taipei University of Technology followed international standards for judging, and incorporated the use of AI into the process. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the invention of the Rubik’s Cube, and the enthusiasm at the weekend’s competition reflected the cube’s continued popularity. Parents at the event said that the Rubik’s Cube is a great tool for teaching children.

Parent
When my younger daughters see their older sister playing with the cube, they want to play with it too. So my kids aren’t interested in electronics, but they will talk about the Rubik’s Cube with each other.

Parent
My child’s mood used to fluctuate a lot before he came into contact with the Rubik’s Cube. But after he discovered the cube, his mood became more stable, and he showed a willingness to continue with his studies.

Lin Yi-hua
Taipei deputy mayor
A child must be very calm and focused to solve the Rubik’s Cube, so this stability, calmness, and resilience toward stress are greatly trained through the process.

Solving a Rubik’s Cube can benefit mental development in several ways. Perhaps its current popularity with students signals a trend toward greater diversity in education.
