Government-backed industrial upgrades showcased in Miaoli

Since the Miaoli Industrial Innovation Promotion Center was established by the Ministry of Economic Affairs in 2014, it has driven innovations and investment opportunities to the tune of billions of NT. This past Friday, 25 new processes were introduced to the public, ranging from high-tech ceramics and powder metallurgy, to textiles and smart services. The event showcased Miaoli’s industrial process thanks to governmental support.

Here’s a demonstration of a drop-proof ocarina made by a Miaoli company from durable clay that has captured an international market share of more than 40%.

Different kinds of clay are mixed using AI tech, which can be fired into ocarinas that are drop-proof. The market share of this company’s ocarinas ranks second worldwide.

Powder metallurgy processes are also being taken to new heights. A producer applied a composite-material nanoplating techonology to make anti-static carrier trays for semiconductors.

With powder metallurgy and plating processes, they’ve developed semiconductor carrier trays that are anti-static, making it three times more long-lasting than conventional ones.

Another partnering company utilizes fast carbonization process to turn agricultural waste into microbial strains for strawberry cultivation.

This helps domestic smart farming operators increase strawberry yields by up to 50%.

Over the past three years, the Miaoli Industrial Innovation Promotion Center has funded more than 450 industrial projects, to the tune of NT$1 billion. It has also been consulted by more than 2,000 businesses, and driven almost NT$7 billion worth of investments.

經濟部在苗栗地區，設立「苗栗產業創新推動中心」，協助在地產業升級，(13日)上午在苗栗三義，舉辦「產業升級交流分享會」，現場展示25項科專技術，導入高值陶瓷、粉末冶金、紡織化纖、智慧服務等成功案例，展現產業轉型的成果。

產業升級分享會上，傳來悠揚的陶笛聲，這是苗栗一家窯業，研發出耐摔陶土材料，讓超過半世紀之傳統窯業，躍升為國際陶笛大廠，市占率達4成以上。

“不同的這種材質的陶土，用AI的技術，做一些混合，然後，可以燒製出耐摔的這種陶笛的產品，它在陶笛全世界的市場佔有率，成為一個全世界，第二大的陶笛的廠商”

粉末冶金也是苗栗重要的產業，業者運用多層複合材料的奈米精密鍍膜，導入半導體應用，成功開發出高抗靜電載盤，跨域進入電動車、骨科醫材等領域。

“結合這個粉末冶金，跟這個鍍膜的技術，那就開發出了這種半導體晶片所需要的載盤，所以它在抗靜電各方面的這樣的一個特性，可以讓這個載盤的壽命延長三倍”

另外，也輔導業者，運用快速炭化技術，將農業剩餘材料，轉換成生物助劑，應用在草莓栽種，大幅提高產量。

苗栗產業創新推動中心，近三年來，總共投入超過10億科專經費，協助業者技術導入超過450案，諮詢及輔導廠商超過2，000家，總體帶動業者投資，將近70億元。

First batch of M1A2Ts delivered to Taiwan, transported to Hsinchu

Thirty-eight M1A2T tanks from the US have been delivered to Taiwan, making up the first batch of deliveries from an order of 108 units. The shipment was transported to a military training center in Hsinchu in the early hours of Monday. During the day, personnel from the US could be seen assisting local troops unpack the equipment. An expert says the tanks will greatly enhance Taiwan’s land defenses when used in conjunction with rocket systems. Let’s hear more.

In many aspects, M1A2T marks a significant improvement from the older M60A3 model in terms of mobility. Features such as the thermal imaging system and the rangefinder allow it to quickly detect and neutralize enemies while moving. Taiwan’s land-based artillery is actually rather outdated. There is a pressing need to upgrade our equipment’s precision, mobility and firepower, and we have been seeing gradual improvements in these areas. In addition to the recently-acquired HIMARS system, the M1-series tanks will mark a significant improvement for our armored forces in land combat.

The first batch will be deployed in Northern Taiwan, to enhance the defense of the capital. They will also serve to strengthen Taiwan’s national defense capabilities and greatly improve Taiwan’s armored warfare tactics, operations and equipment. Should China decide to launch an amphibious assault, once they reach the shore and are up against the M1A2Ts, they will most definitely have to reconsider their approach.

The military has released footage of the tank for all to see. Its turret is located in the rear of the vehicle, and, for now, the muzzle of the gun is covered in plastic wrap. The vehicle also features track skirts on its sides to boost its armor. All 108 M1A2Ts are scheduled to be delivered by the end of 2026. They are expected to be deployed in northern Taiwan to defend the capital.

KMT passes legislative review to amend recall law in just 3 minutes

A legislative bill to raise the threshold to recall elected officials is the latest battleground between lawmakers of the ruling and opposition parties. The proposal, submitted by KMT lawmaker Hsu Yu-chen includes a provision that “recall votes must be greater than the number of votes the official received when elected.” On Monday morning, KMT lawmakers blocked DPP lawmakers from the meeting room by force, making for a small gathering and the passing of the bill in one minute.

In this footage, KMT lawmaker Chiu Chen-chun is seen pushing DPP lawmaker Hsu Chih-chieh on the head, four times to be exact. Moments later, Hsu is being lifted off by another KMT lawmaker Yu Hao, who’s twice his size.

Meanwhile, a fight broke out between KMT lawmaker Chen Yu-chen and DPP lawmaker Chen Ting-fei.

What exactly is going on? At 10 p.m. the night before, KMT lawmakers made their way to stand guard at the Legislative Yuan, as the DPP were reportedly preparing to do the same. The KMT wants to raise the threshold to recall elected officials, which the DPP is against.

After the KMT lawmakers arrived Sunday night, they put tape around the entrance and even locked the emergency exit door. The next morning, DPP lawmaker Asenay Daliyalrep used sanitary pads as makeshift post-it notes and wrote “The KMT is afraid of being recalled” in protest on the door. Meanwhile, DPP lawmaker Chung Chia-pin went onto the lookout on the second floor to find a way in. He was followed by two KMT lawmakers. But when all this was going on, the meeting had already begun.

At 9 a.m. sharp, KMT lawmaker Hsu Hsin-ying announced the start of the meeting, when only a handful of other KMT lawmakers were present. After one minute, Hsu announced that the proposed amendments have passed committee review. Then, at 9:03, the meeting ends, and DPP lawmakers could finally enter the room.

That’s not how things work at the legislature. We weren’t even allowed inside the conference room. At least let us in. We didn’t even get a chance to speak up during the procedure. How is that a committee? It’s a travesty. It’s even worse than martial law.

The DPP voiced concern over the procedure, but it seems the KMT caucus is determined for their amendments to pass before the end of the current legislative session on Jan. 21 next year.

Taiwanese and Australian officials talk closer ties

A recent FTV talk show invited three officials involved with Taiwan-Australia affairs. During the show, Queensland Trade and Investment Commissioner Juna Ferrett recounted fondly her childhood in Taiwan; while Chen Chiu-yen, member of the Overseas Community Affairs Council, or OCAC talked about her experience fostering cultural exchanges for over two decades in Australia. Together with OCAC Minister Hsu Chia-ching, they held a lively discussion on developing closer Taiwan-Australia ties.

Everything’s within reach in Taiwan. But in Australia, wow, it’s like you can’t get anywhere. It took some time getting used to.

Member of the Overseas Community Affairs Council Chen Chiu-yen has been a Taiwanese expat in Australia for three decades. Currently, Chen is also the chair of the Australia Taiwan Culture Foundation and a painter.

Chen is active in Queensland’s art scene. For more than 20 years, she’s painted the beauty of Taiwan. In 2003 she founded the World Arts & Multi-Culture Inc., a foundation that’s introduced Taiwan’s top music and stage performance groups to Australia, including the likes of Ju Percussion Group, the Chio-Tian Folk Drums & Art Troupe, and the Evergreen Symphony Orchestra.

Juna Ferrett, Queensland Trade and Investment Commissioner has Indigenous Taiwanese and Australian heritage. She lived in Taiwan until sixth grade and still has fond memories of Taitung.

When I was little I often went to the hot springs in Kanalung. Great times. I remember there was a small suspension bridge, a red one, I remember it clearly. Two weeks ago I went back and saw that they’ve built a new bridge, completely brand new. I was really touched.

Of all places, Ferrett remembered a bridge near her childhood home. Meanwhile, Minister of the Overseas Community Affairs Council Hsu Chia-ching shared her views on fostering closer Taiwan-Australia relations.

Australia has strong tourism, agriculture and mining industries. These are the main drivers of their economy. Whereas Taiwan has an edge in high tech, healthcare and biotechnology. I’ve always thought Australia and Taiwan are the most complementary pair of countries.

Hsu said Taiwan and Australia are a great example of the sum being greater than its parts.

TSMC CEO CC Wei hints at recent meeting with Tesla’s Elon Musk

TSMC CEO C.C. Wei hinted at a recent meeting with Tesla founder Elon Musk, at the opening of the National Science and Technology Conference on Monday. The event, which happens once every four years, is a gathering of the top names in tech in Taiwan. Also in attendance was President Lai Ching-te, who underscored the government’s commitment to the tech industry.

You might all be mistaken in thinking that the chair of TSMC must be knowledgeable and experienced. That’s only really true when the chair’s surname is Chang.

In front of the president and other government officials, TSMC CEO C.C. Wei opened his speech with a little self-deprecating humor. He revealed that a few days ago he had a meeting with a special person in San Francisco.

We excel at chip manufacturing, packaging and testing. And we have great data centers that strengthen our company’s position in the artificial intelligence market. A few days ago, I spoke with the richest person in the world, and he told me he was focusing on multifunction robots, not cars for his company’s future. He said his biggest concern was a shortage of chips. I told him not to worry. I said, “If you’re willing to pay, you’ll get your chips.”

Though Wei didn’t name names, it is likely that he spoke with Tesla founder Elon Musk, who is currently the wealthiest man in the world. He also made it clear that Taiwan’s technological prowess could be harnessed in the development of multifunction robots and drones, further cementing Taiwan’s position as a key tech hub. TSMC is reportedly also helping its own competitor, Intel, to train talent in advanced semiconductor manufacturing, amid operational difficulties brought about by the ousting of former CEO Pat Gelsinger. Observers say the move could also benefit Taiwan.

Outcry over narrow car lane that forces traffic violations

A car lane in Yilan is leaving drivers befuddled about how to avoid breaking traffic rules. The reason is that the lane is a mere 1.5m wide, well under the average width of a car, let alone a truck. That means that whenever motorists drive along the road, they must cross over the sidelines onto the road shoulder, or worse, the middle line onto the opposite lane.

Cars move along Kelin Road in Yilan. Here, the road markings get narrower and narrower the further you go, forcing vehicles to run over the sidelines or the lane divider. One driver had enough, and posted about the situation online.

The driver posted on a group of local Yilan residents, saying that it was the first time seeing such narrow lanes, and asking, “Are these markings normal?” The post attracted a flurry of responses. Some said it was ridiculous, others joked that it was perhaps a new kind of driving test.

Locals can’t believe it. As you turn into Kelin Road from Beicheng Bridge, the road gets narrower for about 1km due to a bicycle path on the side. Let’s take out the tape measure. The asphalt itself is 7.5m wide. The road shoulder is a whole 2m, leaving just 1.53m for one of the lanes, well under the average width of a car of 1.8m. Motorists say they are afraid of getting a ticket for inevitably driving over the markings.

We will convene with the relevant agencies to review this matter. Perhaps the car lane and the bicycle lane can be merged into one, so that all vehicles can use the road normally.

The wide road shoulder was intended to provide a lane for bycicles, but the addition didn’t take into consideration the lack of space for cars. The county government says it will decide whether to repaint the markings soon so that all sorts of vehicles can ride on the road without problems.
