Dutch missionary’s family of six settles in Chiayi

After falling in love with Taiwan, a Dutch missionary decided to settle down in Chiayi’s Xingang Township with his wife and four kids. More than just missionaries, the family leads local children in practicing English, singing together, and playing games. They even started a vlog to share details of their family life, gathering a large online following.

Kids rush out the door to the car, greeting their grandparents who have just arrived from the Netherlands. With warm hugs all around, they show just how much they have missed each other.

This family of six lives in Chiayi’s Xingang Township. Wearing a gray sweatshirt, the father spins two of his children around in a circle, smiling happily. A graduate of seminary school, 35-year-old Rik-Jan Willemsen works as a missionary. He has lived in Taiwan for over five years with his wife and their four children.

After moving to Chiayi two-and-a-half years ago, they began hosting events in their home to serve the community. By teaching English and leading games, they fill the neighborhood with the sound of children’s laughter.

We can help children learn some English. People in Xingang don’t have as many opportunities to learn English, so we think this can benefit everyone and give the kids the chance to be happy studying English.

The family’s four children study at Xingang’s local kindergarten and elementary school, getting along well with Taiwanese children.

This Dutch family chose to settle down in Chiayi after falling in love with Taiwan. They also record videos together, sharing their life in Taiwan with over 80,000 followers online.

一名來自荷蘭的傳教士韋毅民，與妻子和四個小孩，因為熱愛台灣，選擇定居在嘉義縣新港鄉，他們除了傳教，更主動教導附近的小朋友英語、帶動唱和玩遊戲，更開了一個影音頻道分享家庭生活大小事，累積了不少粉絲關注。

小朋友打開門往前衝，因為最愛的阿公、阿嬤，從荷蘭飛到台灣探望他們，並一一給予大大擁抱，表達好久不見的想念。

嘉義縣新港鄉住了來自荷蘭的一家六口，身穿灰色帽T的父親，抓著孩子的手轉圈圈，笑得好開心，他就是35歲的韋毅民，從神學院畢業的他是一名傳教士，和妻子及四個小寶貝，一起來台定居，已經長達五年的時間。

兩年半前來到嘉義新港，夫妻倆因為熱愛服務社區，曾在家裡舉辦活動，並主動教導小朋友英語、帶動唱和玩遊戲，也讓當地的歡笑聲一陣又一陣。

"我們也可以幫助小朋友，學習一些英文。還有我們覺得新港的朋友，沒有那麼多機會學習英文，所以我們覺得這樣可以造福大家，也讓孩子們快樂的學英文。"

這對夫妻的四個寶貝，就讀新港當地的國小和幼兒園，與其他台灣的小朋友們相處相當融洽。

住在嘉義的荷蘭一家人，因為熱愛台灣因此選擇長期在這定居，夫妻倆還會與小朋友一起拍攝生活影片，上傳網路與大家分享在台灣的點點滴滴，他們的影音頻道目前已經累積超過8萬名粉絲關注。

TSMC’s key technologies will stay in Taiwan: premier

The government on Friday again moved to allay public fears that Taiwan’s star chipmaker TSMC would not move its most advanced technology to the US, leaving the island more vulnerable to tense geopolitics. TSMC is popularly known as Taiwan’s silicon shield, as many Taiwanese believe having its most advanced technology onshore ensures that other countries will want to help Taiwan if China invaded the island. KMT leader Eric Chu charged that with TSMC’s new US$100 billion investment in the U.S., the silicon shield will weaken. Premier Cho Jung-tai in response said he would maintain Taiwan’s key status in the industry, while the economics minister Kuo Jyh-huei said he would ensure there was enough land available for TSMC’s expansions in Taiwan.

Why are we expanding in the US? It is because of customer demand. As of now, this year’s on full schedule, so is next year. Even our production lines that will be built the year after will have orders to fulfill immediately. As for Taiwan, already we’re planning to add 11 production lines.

TSMC CEO C.C. Wei is stressing that expanding the company’s US investments is a result of huge customer demand and its true R&D center will remain in Hsinchu. In other words, TSMC’s advanced processes will remain in Taiwan. The opposition is still not buying this.

We saw yesterday that President Lai pushed TSMC CEO C.C. Wei to the front, which was tantamount to letting himself off the hook. But it was not to let Taiwan off the hook. After the six wafer fabs, two packaging plants and the R&D center are moved over, the entire function of the silicon shield will be greatly reduced, and the sacred mountains that protect the nation will be cut in half. The DPP is still focusing on political propaganda and party interests.

TSMC has established plans in many municipalities in Taiwan. Some of them are already being implemented and some are in the planning process. For a long time to come, Taiwan will continue to ensure its leading position in critical technologies internationally.

The government has repeatedly assured that TSMC will not become an American “ASMC” and it would work on improving the investment environment in Taiwan.

Apple moves jobs back to the US

Apple announced it would spend US$500 billion in the US over the next four years and create 20,000 jobs, signaling its pro-US jobs and investment policy. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump announced that he would double tariffs on China, where most Apple products are made. VOA’s Michelle Quinn reports.

Many iPhones and other Apple products are made in China. In recent years, Apple has expanded its manufacturing into other countries such as Vietnam and India. But not so much to the United States.

That is changing. Apple said that over the next four years it would invest US$500 billion in the US — with plans that include building a Texas facility to manufacture artificial intelligence servers — and commit to creating 20,000 US jobs.

Apple’s announcement follows a meeting between CEO Tim Cook and President Donald Trump. The iPhone maker is among US firms recently announcing domestic investment and job creation.

In a social media post, Trump doubled the 10% universal tariff imposed on China, effective Tuesday.

Observers say that Apple’s move is part of its trend to diversify its supply chain and is not related to Trump’s tariffs on China.

They have been for some years in the process of moving production away from China anyway pre-tariff. There’s still a substantial amount in China. But there’s a trend here that’s clear, and I think Apple will continue that.

Fans unbothered by lack of Taiwanese players on MLB poster

Team Taiwan will be playing at the 2026 World Baseball Classic Tournament in Tokyo. The 365-day countdown officially began Thursday, and America’s Major League Baseball released an official poster to mark the occasion. Although some may notice a lack of Taiwanese among the players on the poster, fans say it’s nothing to fret about since Team Taiwan still won Premier12 last year regardless. The reason may be because there aren’t any Taiwanese in Major League Baseball at the moment.

The poster for the 2026 World Baseball Classic Tournament came out on Thursday, noting the event was exactly 365 days away. But some may ask, why aren’t any Taiwanese among the players featured?

Well, it’s organized by Major League Baseball. No need to dwell on it. I remember our players also weren’t featured on Premier12 last year, but we still came out on top.

Turns out, the reason may be because there aren’t any Taiwanese players in Major League Baseball at the moment; whereas other non-US players are, such as Japan’s Shohei Ohtani and Juan Soto from the Dominican Republic. Of course there’s Team USA captain Mookie Betts right on top-center.

We’ll let the organizer know that we hope poster designs will feature players from every participating country. The World Baseball Classic is still quite commercialized. And teams from Asia will be playing at Tokyo Dome. I believe Taiwanese baseball fans will be a large customer base there.

On March 5 next year, Taiwan will first face off with Australia, followed by Japan, Czechia and South Korea in the following days. That makes Team Taiwan the only one to play four consecutive days.

The only worry will be to have to play four days in a row. The athletes’ village will be right by Tokyo Dome, so transportation won’t be an issue. Like with Premier12, just pay more attention to the second day with Japan and the third day with Czechia. I believe the coaches will make the most of the roster. Our team should be at its best ever next year.

To advance into the quarterfinals, which will be held in the US, Team Taiwan will have to win at least three games in Tokyo.
