We’ve all at some point been upset about a bad score in an exam, but a university student in New Taipei recently took matters a step too far. After finding he had got zero marks in his exam, the student pulled out a craft knife to discuss the exam with his teacher in the middle of class. Thought the teacher didn’t seem to notice the blade, the students in class did, and were terrified to say the least. Campus security was alerted and the student was removed from the classroom. Let’s watch the exchange.

World Expo pavilion introduces Taiwan through advanced tech

Osaka is hosting the World Expo for the first time in 55 years, with over 150 countries participating. Taiwan’s pavilion, called Tech World, introduces Taiwan to the world through art created with advanced technology. The pavilion’s abbreviation, TW, also stands for Taiwan. It features three large theaters displaying the nation’s natural beauty.

Two dancers intertwine, mesmerizing the audience with their graceful movements. This is a performance by the Cloud Gate Dance Theater, one of Taiwan’s most representative dance troupes, for the opening of Taiwan’s Tech World pavilion at the 2025 World Expo in Osaka.

The pavilion’s ribbon cutting ceremony was led by the chairman of the E. Sun Digital Technology, Huang Chih-fang. The pavilion’s abbreviation, TW, also stands for Taiwan.

For this year’s World Expo, we’re presenting three aspects: life, nature, and future. We hope that during the World Expo’s six-month period, as many as 1 million people will visit our pavilion.

This white building was designed with Taiwan’s mountains in mind, representing the nation’s breathtaking natural scenery. There are three large theaters inside, each one centered around one of the pavilion’s three themes.

The Life Area shows the mutual benefits of eco-diversity, using projections to show many species native to Taiwan, as well as the Taiwania tree, called the “tree that hit the moon” by the Rukai people. Many technology teams worked together to create this interactive expo, where visitors can use tablets to introduce butterflies to the display. The Nature Area presents harmony between people and nature, arranging lights through point cloud technology to show Taiwan’s natural landscape. The Future Area emphasizes that people will continue to use chips, integrating them into daily life to adapt to a changing environment.

I was moved when I saw it. What gave me the strongest impression was the area on the first floor with lots of tablets, that performance area. I almost cried when I was watching it.

One of the highlights of the event is a collaboration between the Industrial Technology Research Institute and the National Palace Museum, which includes 8K ultra-realistic displays and immersive interactive experiences. These reinterpret classic artworks to make the paintings come alive. The organizers paid close attention to every detail, introducing Taiwan to the world.

Global symposium invites speakers from Japan and US to discuss Taiwan

The World Taiwanese Congress and Taiwan National Alliance recently hosted the 13th Global Taiwan National Affairs Symposium with Abe Akie, widow of former Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo, as a guest speaker. During her talk, Abe said that a Taiwan contingency is a Japan contingency. She emphasized that Taiwan and Japan must work together to maintain regional peace and stability, and US assistance is also crucial.

The 13th Global Taiwan National Affairs Symposium, hosted by the World Taiwanese Congress and Taiwan National Alliance, gathered representatives from around the world, including Abe Akie, spouse of the late Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo, who gave a keynote speech.

My husband said before that a Taiwan contingency is a Japan contingency. I tried to understand this from my own perspective. Perhaps my husband truly meant that if Taiwan is OK, then Japan is OK, which makes sense. But I eventually came to think that he meant if Taiwan is safe, then Japan is safe.

We have a saying in Japanese that “close neighbors are better than distant relatives.” Applying this to Japan-Taiwan relations, even though we are two different countries that could be labeled as “other,” we always support each other at crucial moments. In addition to Taiwan and Japan strengthening their relationship, the US also plays an important role. Randall Schriver, the former US assistant secretary of defense for Indo-Pacific security affairs, discussed how Taiwan and the US can deepen their cooperation under US President Donald Trump’s second term.

Reeve’s muntjacs hunted by domestic dog in Kaohsiung

With a gentle and timid nature, the Reeve’s muntjac is the smallest species of deer living in Taiwan. This small mammal is often hunted by stray dogs in mountainous area. One domestic dog in Kaohsiung’s Liugui District even caught over 30 Reeve’s muntjacs within one year. Although the muntjac was removed from the protected species list in 2019, it is still illegal to hunt or capture them under the Act of Wildlife Conservation.

The wildlife on Kaohsiung’s Shoushan Mountain is plentiful and diverse. Among them, the timid Reeve’s muntjac is often hunted by other animals, as it is the smallest species of deer living in Taiwan. One dog even caught over 30 of them in one year.

It was the first time I saw my dog catch something so big. I thought it would only hunt rats and rabbits. Cats and rats bite back, but muntjacs don’t, so it likes chasing them.

This two-year-old domestic farm dog is a skilled hunter, catching 31 muntjacs over the course of the past year. It often accompanies its owner up the mountain and along the Laonong River, where muntjacs often wander in the surrounding woods. When the agile dog successfully captures a muntjac, the owner carries its carcass on his shoulders and takes it home.

Many members of the public mistakenly think that ordinary wild animals are not protected, so they can be captured or hunted. But according to the Act of Wildlife Conservation, animals cannot just be hunted at will.

According to the Agriculture Bureau, it is illegal to capture wild animals and take them home, regardless of whether they a protected species.

Firefighter uses brute force to push 1.75-ton truck out of danger

A firefighter in Nantou recently pulled off a jaw-dropping feat during a mission, single-handedly pushing a stationary 1.75-ton truck out of harm’s way. His fire brigade had been struggling to create space around a van that had caught fire on the side of the road. But thanks to his rigorous gym training and fast thinking, he cleared out space by pushing a neighboring vehicle away with brute force, helping to extinguish the blaze.

Smoke pours out from a van on the side of the road, as firefighters, fully equipped, rush to put out the blaze. The two vehicles on either side could catch fire at any time, so one firefighter tries to open the door.

But sometimes the answer is brawn over brains. One of the firefighters rushes to the truck next to the fire, opens the door, pulls down the handbrake and rushes out again. Then he runs to the back and pushes the 1.75-ton vehicle forward all on his own.

Now that there’s enough space, the fire brigade is able to put the fire out. The incident took place in Puli, Nantou. It is thought that the van caught fire due to its old electrical system. Seeing that it was parked close to two other vehicles, the top priority for the firefighters was to make space.

The operation was made more difficult because of the vehicles blocking the way. We couldn’t open the door of the van. So we resorted to manual force to release the handbrake and push the small truck away to create some space.

Pushing a truck by brute force is far from easy, but perhaps not so much for this muscular firefighter who loves to work out. And all the exercise was not in vain, as it was just the solution needed for the critical moment.

His quick thinking and strong muscles proved handy at just the right time, preventing the fire from spreading and causing more damage.

Worshippers welcome gods for the resident Ong Yah’s birthday

Every year for almost 200 years, Xinwen Jiaying Temple in Chiayi has celebrated the birthday of their most revered resident deity, known as Ong Yah of the Yin Mansion, with a series of rituals. This Thursday, a welcoming ritual was performed to usher in guest Ong Yahs to celebrate the big day. Palaquins were carried into the water nearby to welcome the deities traveling by sea in the spiritual realm.

When it’s the perfect hour, the four palanquins with the resident Ong Yah at the front, are taken by the procession troupe into the god’s harbor. Then, those carrying lesser deities follow.

This ritual is performed by Chiayi’s Xinwen Jiaying Temple every year, four days before the fourth new moon on the traditional Chinese calendar. It’s said that two ships carrying the gods will dock here, and the resident deities will come and welcome the guests, to celebrate the resident Ong Yah’s birthday the next day.

It has a 182-year history. Every year on the 27th day of the third month of the traditional calendar, we open up a path on the water to welcome the guest Ong Yahs.

It’s attended by many Xinwen natives, even those living elsewhere in the country. After the path on water is opened, the palanquins will then make their way onshore, bestowing blessings by passing through worshippers lying prostrate.

Prostration is the most devotional ritual we perform to welcome the guest Ong Yahs to the Jiaying Temple.

After the guest Ong Yahs are settled down, traditional performances including Taiwanese opera and glove puppetry are showcased as entertainment. The festivity lasts all the way into the following night, so that the gods, satisfied, will bring worshippers and the region peace and prosperity.
