The Mainland Affairs Council has issued a new interpretation expanding the circumstances that will strip Taiwanese nationals off their citizenship. The move comes after three individuals, including taekwondo athlete Lee Tung-hsien, lost their Taiwanese citizenship earlier this year, when they were found to be in possession of Chinese IDs. The new interpretation rules that people with permanent residence certificates will also lose their status as Taiwanese citizens. Lets’ hear from the MAC.

The permanent residence certificate is the basis of administrative management, and individuals who obtain it can register for Chinese household registration, and obtain an ID card. As we see it, getting permanent residency means that down the line you’ll be getting an ID.
The MAC also released the results on a survey about several cross-strait issues. Some 70% of respondents believe that lawmakers and representatives must require approval from the Taiwan government before traveling to China. And, 67% believe that Chinese spouses who advocate for China’s forceful annexation of Taiwan should lose their Taiwan residency. In addition 56% say the government should do background checks on Chinese nationals coming to Taiwan for pro-unification positions.
