Woman forgets passcode to safe filled with gold

2025-05-07

A woman in Penghu was thrilled after cracking open a safe that she had long forgotten the passcode for. About two years ago, Ms. Wang had put about 25 ounces of gold in the safe. Now that the price of gold has skyrocketted, she decided to enlist the help of several strong men to force the safe open. You can imagine how happy she was to know that the treasure is now worth NT$1 million more than when she first put it in.

Three men carefully bring the safe down to the street. Then, one of them starts hammering away at the metal box as if there’s no tomorrow.

A few bangs here and another few over there. But the safe is too sturdy. In the end, it took them about half an hour to pry it open.

They gasp as the door is flung open. Inside, there’s a lot of gold bars, jewelry and property deeds. They belong to Ms. Wang, who put them in the safe two years ago but later forgot the code. Amid the rise in gold prices, she became desperate to access her fortune, and decided to resort to brute force.

Ms. Wang
Gold safe owner
I threw away the passcode.

Mr. Ou
Friend of Ms. Wang
It was difficult to get it open. I told her I should get a gold bar. It’d be so nice if it were mine.

The safe contained 18 taels of gold, and some 24-carat gold jewelry. They weighed about 700g, or 25 ounces in total, currently valued at more than NT$2.3 million. Ms. Wang had started collecting gold when the price was at around NT$7,500 per mace, or 3.78g, spending about NT$1.3 million in total. But with gold prices climbing to NT$13,030 per mace, the value of her stash appreciated by almost NT$1 million.

Ms. Wang
Gold safe owner
I think back of how I bought it when it was at NT$7,500 per mace. And now it’s worth so much. It’s fantastic, I’m ecstatic. I didn’t make a mistake buying gold, and I think I’ll keep doing it.

Owner
Goldsmith
She’s been buying gold from me for a few years and putting it in a safe. After two years in the safe, she won almost NT$1 million. She’s got some NT$2.3 million in gold.

Though Ms. Wang had to ruin her NT$30,000 safe to get the contents out, the two-year wait was more than worth it with gains of almost NT$1 million.
