Taiwanese tour group caught in India-Pakistan standoff

The conflict between India and Pakistan is rapidly escalating. On Wednesday, Pakistan closed its airspace in response to India’s missile attacks just hours earlier. More than 10 flights operated by Taiwanese airlines were affected, while a Taiwanese tour group was trapped in Pakistan. Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has raised its travel advisory warning for the region.

As conflict escalates between India and Pakistan, a tourist group from Taiwan is still traveling in the area.

The tourist says it’s already his third time there. The group of nine plans to stay in Pakistan for 26 days and only head back to Taiwan on May 29. They’re aged between 50 and 75. The travel agent they’re with says everyone in the group has experience traveling in less-safe regions, and that some of them have even been to Pakistan two or three times before. She also says they’re sticking to their itinerary for now, and that they’re protected by local police at all times.

The local government there knows our full itinerary. For instance, yesterday they notified us that we must cancel our trip to Sukkur the day after.

The travel agent also says the area they’re traveling in is in the conflict zone, and that highways have been cordoned off for military use. Meanwhile, the foreign ministry has raised its travel advisory to orange for areas of India bordering Pakistan, and red for Pakistan itself. In other words, citizens are urged against non-essential travel and to depart the soonest possible, respectively.

The Taiwanese tour group in Pakistan was only getting started with their tour. Even if they want to come back to Taiwan early, they won’t be able to because flights are disrupted, including those operated by two Taiwanese airlines.

When we were near Pakistan, the captain said conflict had broken out there, and that the airspace was closed off, so we headed back to Bangkok.

At least ten Taiwanese airline flights over Tuesday and Wednesday were affected. Meanwhile, airlines are keeping a close watch on any developments.

印度.巴基斯坦互轟台旅行團9人續留巴基斯坦

南亞兩個核武大國印度和巴基斯坦，衝突今天急遽升溫，使得華航及長榮航空昨天(6日)有不少班機受到影響，不少旅客搭了10幾20小時的飛機後，被原機載回台灣，目前也有台灣九人旅行團在巴基斯坦當地，行程照走，隨團還有觀光警察，保護大家安全。

印度跟巴基斯坦衝突升溫，而台灣還有旅行團正在當地旅遊。

“假使我一個人的話，就會害怕，我跟旅行社來的話，都OK的。”

這位旅客已經來第三次了，一行人加領隊總共9人，預計要在巴基斯坦待26天，5/29 才要回家。旅客成員年齡落在50到75歲，旅行社說這團旅客大家都身經百戰，有人已經來兩、三次，目前行程照走，隨團都有觀光警察保護，都很安全。

“我們(在當地)所有的行蹤，他們當地的政府都知道，像昨天他們就通知我們，必須取消後天我們去Sukkur(蘇庫爾)的行程。”

旅行社說原本要去的地方是軍事地點，高速公路被徵收當做軍事跑道，目前印度鄰近巴基斯坦地區，以及巴基斯坦，旅遊警示燈號分別為橙色及紅色，建議避免前往，及盡速離境。

“其實在巴基斯坦的台灣旅行團，才剛開始要玩，如果真的要中止行程，馬上回台灣的話，航班其實也都大亂，台灣兩家國籍航空，也都有受影響。”

“快到巴基斯坦(上空)的時候，機長就說那邊開始打仗了。空域封鎖了，所以我們就回頭到曼谷。”

週二週三兩天，印巴衝突影響國籍航空至少10個航班，航空公司後續也會密切關注

Baishatun Mazu spends night in Nantou

The Baishatun Mazu Pilgrimage marked a historic milestone on Tuesday. It ventured into Nantou County for the first time in its 200-year history. Thousands of devotees trekked across mountainous terrain to accompany the goddess of the sea. After an overnight stay in the land-locked county, the procession headed to Tianzhong in Changhua, where the goddess was welcomed by a joyful crowd at a local school.

Worshippers lie prostrate on the floor as Mazu’s palanquin passes above them. For Nantou locals, this is a historic moment, as it is the first time that the Baishatun Mazu visited the county in 200 years. Even County Commissioner Hsu Shu-hua experienced being under the palanquin for the first time.

Mazu stayed overnight at the Songboling Shou Tian Temple, which venerates Xuanwu. In previous visits from other deities, the temple had not allowed their palanquins to enter its main hall. Even the divine palanquin from Yuliao Zhennan Temple was denied. Online commenters are asking the temple for an explanation as to why it let Mazu in.

We sought permission from our deity, Xuanwu. This was a special exception. Our temple is really small and space is limited, so entry is usually not feasible.

The procession followed the Baishatun Mazu across the mountains of Nantou. After a night at Shou Tian Temple, they resumed on their journey amid heavy rain.

Going up the mountain was brutal. We had to go uphill so many times. It’s exhausting. And today it’s raining. It’s really, really tiring.

Mazu’s “pink racecar” arrived at a school in Tianzhong in Changhua on Wednesday morning. The procession was warmly received by locals, who kneeled down in reverence.

Woman forgets passcode to safe filled with gold

A woman in Penghu was thrilled after cracking open a safe that she had long forgotten the passcode for. About two years ago, Ms. Wang had put about 25 ounces of gold in the safe. Now that the price of gold has skyrocketted, she decided to enlist the help of several strong men to force the safe open. You can imagine how happy she was to know that the treasure is now worth NT$1 million more than when she first put it in.

Three men carefully bring the safe down to the street. Then, one of them starts hammering away at the metal box as if there’s no tomorrow.

A few bangs here and another few over there. But the safe is too sturdy. In the end, it took them about half an hour to pry it open.

They gasp as the door is flung open. Inside, there’s a lot of gold bars, jewelry and property deeds. They belong to Ms. Wang, who put them in the safe two years ago but later forgot the code. Amid the rise in gold prices, she became desperate to access her fortune, and decided to resort to brute force.

The safe contained 18 taels of gold, and some 24-carat gold jewelry. They weighed about 700g, or 25 ounces in total, currently valued at more than NT$2.3 million. Ms. Wang had started collecting gold when the price was at around NT$7,500 per mace, or 3.78g, spending about NT$1.3 million in total. But with gold prices climbing to NT$13,030 per mace, the value of her stash appreciated by almost NT$1 million.

Animal control captures 10 iguanas in one evening at Kaohsiung lake

The population of green iguanas has exploded in recent years. Over at Chengcing Lake in Kaohsiung, people have even spotted one as long as 1.7m, causing frightened park visitors to contact the Agriculture Bureau’s animal control team. In just one night, two fully armed officers captured ten reptiles, with the largest measuring in at 1.4m long.

There are a lot here. It’s basically their habitat. When they see people, they’ll jump straight into the water. Since they’ve been disturbed before, they’re afraid of people.

A huge 1.7m-long iguana has even been spotted at the popular Chengcing Lake in Kaohsiung lounging on the walking path. It shocked passersby, who nearly tread on the reptile that’s used to basking in the sun during Kaohsiung’s hot summers. After receiving a report, the city’s Agriculture Bureau sends a team out to capture the reptiles. In just one evening, they were able to capture ten, the largest one measuring in at 1.4m.

The reason we hunt at night is because when the iguanas are frightened off during the day, they can run faster than dogs. After we patrol the area during the day, we take the opportunity to capture then after sundown.

The team shines a bright light into the treetops, being careful not to disturb the iguanas. Since they’re not as active at night, there’s a higher capture success rate. Kaohsiung is also offering a new training course this year, where members of the public can get certified to join the iguana hunting team. It’s all part of necessary efforts to keep the invasive species from harming the ecosystem.

Waste materials become art criticizing consumerism

Today, we take you to an exhibition that explores consumerism and waste by artist Steph Huang. In Huang’s hands, discarded materials become sculptural installations with a deep meaning. FTV reporter Stephany Yang shows us the highlights!

The exhibition space has become a deli, with discarded materials that have been turned into sculptural installations. Some of the works are made from recycled materials like glass, shredded paper and bronze. This one was made of shredded paper, collected by Steph Huang from a printing factory.

The exhibition takes the form of a storefront. Blending already made objects, mixed media sculptures, photography, and also a sound installation to create a micro-landscape to reflect the habits and systems we often take for granted. This display stall you see here, is actually constructed from paper bricks. These bricks are formed by compressing and binding paper off-cuts from printing factories that will be sent to a recycling plant to continue the next cycle of its life. This is an intentional gesture to circulate use and sustainability.

This work “Packaging” is a collage made of used wrapping paper from sandwich stands and bakeries.

Paper is a recurring material in the artist’s work. This work is called "Packaging." As you can see, she has collected food packaging from Taiwan, UK, France, Germany, and so on. She assembled them onto a colorful collage. These papers were layered on a wood panel and they form a beautiful and random combination of these papers. These not only document the artist’s personal journey, but also reflects broader patterns of consumer behavior.

This work titled “Tower of Freebie” was inspired by Taiwanese stores that give out promotional items. Huang invites her audience to lend their surplus merch to build a collaborative tower. Through the exhibition, Huang hopes to encourage viewers to reflect on their relationship with consumption and waste.
