Basketball-sized rock crushes car on Mother’s Day

A shocking video has emerged online of a family going for a Mother’s Day outing on Sunday. They had been riding a car through Jianshi in Hsinchu, when a boulder the size of a basketball fell on their vehicle. Though the windscreen was completely destroyed, the three occupants emerged unscathed.

It was a smooth ride until suddenly, Bam! A rock falls from above, crushing the car and destroying the windscreen.

The driver finally snaps out of it. It was a rockslide! The couple were traveling with their 1-month-old baby, when the rock fell on their car. The incident happened at around 1 in the afternoon on Mother’s Day, when the car was at the 7km mark of Hsinchu County Road No. 60. The rock was about the size of a basketball and it completely smashed the windscreen, filling the car with glass shards.

We had gone to Fuxing to visit my mother-in-law for Mother’s Day. We were just heading back and I was driving as usual, slowly and steadily, and out of nowhere our car got crushed. Our 1-month-old was in the car with us.

After arriving at the scene, officers helped move the vehicle to a safe location and cleared the rocks and debris to prevent any further incidents.

The steep slope on the side of the road makes rockfalls relatively common, especially amid the recent constant rains. The matter will be reported to the county government to enhance the stability of the slope and ensure the safety of road users.

嚇! 新竹尖石鄉落石意外開車經過砸到擋風玻璃

新竹再傳落石意外！昨天(11)下午，有民眾在網路上PO出一段驚悚影片。當時他開車行經新竹縣尖石鄉玉峰部落附近時，突然有落石，砸到擋風玻璃上，當場碎裂，還好落石沒有造成人員受傷。推測可能是連日大雨，導致山區土石滑落。

畫面中，車子本來開得好好的，突然車身一陣劇烈搖晃，落石從天而降，擋風玻璃瞬間碎裂。

開車的丈夫，回過神來，告訴妻子有落石，因為車上還有個剛滿月的兒子，夫妻倆簡直嚇壞了！母親節下午1點左右，一家三口行經鄉道竹60-1線7公里處時，車前擋風玻璃，遭到約一顆籃球大小落石擊中，造成擋風玻璃上方，破了一個洞，車內也到處都有玻璃碎片。

除了因連日大雨影響，由於該路段上方，屬於風化石坡，每年都會有零星落石發生，之後相關單位將提報縣政府，辦理邊坡保護工作業，以保障人車安全。

Former president makes first stop of Europe trip in Lithuania

Former President Tsai Ing-wen began her Europe trip over the weekend in Lithuania. Although it was earlier announced that she’ll be visiting Lithuania and Denmark, on Monday it was confirmed that she’s adding the UK to her itinerary.

It’s the Miracle Tile of Vilnius, the capital. Eyes closed, she makes a 360-turn and wishes for Taiwan’s peace and prosperity. She also meets with Taiwanese students studying there.

She hands them some Taiwan goodies, including a pin, puff snacks and wafer rolls before sending them off.

At Europe’s largest vertical farm, Tsai tries freshly picked pea shoots and ready-made green juice.

She downs it all in one go. She also meets with members of the Lithuanian parliament, and thanks them for Lithuania’s support for Taiwan.

New technologies used in Chih Siou’s Taipei concert

As part of his Asia tour, singer-songwriter Chih Siou recently performed at the Taipei Music Center. But the highlight came aside from the music. For this show, the organizers used an automated 5G camera system to livestream the show entirely autonomously. Also, through the interaction of AI and AR, music fans enjoyed an entirely unique concert experience.

A lilting voice envelops the auditorium, transfixing the audience. Singer-songwriter Chih Siou recently held a concert in Taipei that used an automatic 5G camera system, completely eliminating the need for camera operators. Instead, the system can take footage entirely autonomously, greatly improving its effectiveness.

Before, since we had to transmit one at a time, classic Wi-Fi or a traditional internet network would often have some disruptions. But with 5G or some faster transmission methods, we can dramatically cut down on these disruptive environments and increase the speed of transmission.

A pink three-dimensional elephant and swaying ribbons complete the stage, pairing perfectly with Chih Siou’s song. In this immersive “AI plus AR” display, fans can see their own messages on the livestream, making for a more fulfilling and diverse concert experience.

There are some elephants in one of his music videos and also some emojis. So we took some of these elements from the music video and added it to the AR performance. So when the audience views it online or interacts with it, they’ll find the elements have some practical connection to the song.

These innovations were made possible by a subsidy from the Ministry of Culture for innovative applications of 5G technology in audio-visual performances. It was first trialed at A Mei’s New Year’s Eve concert at Taipei Dome last year, and now has been incorporated into Chih Siou’s show to lend more layers to the musical experience.

International restaurants vie for exotic cuisine market in Taiwan

The largest restaurant brand in Japan’s Kansai region has staked a claim on Taiwan’s market, aiming to open 15 locations here within five years. A local brand serving Southeast Asian food is also looking to capitalize on Taiwanese consumers’ preference for exotic and creative cuisine.

Evenly coated in oil, this tender pork is piled high into a mountain of spareribs. With added relish and homemade sauce, fired to perfection, its aroma fills the room in a feast for all senses. But that’s not the only enticing dish.

Slices of fresh fish steep in a milky white sauce. The soup is packed with ingredients and stewed with coconut milk, combining sauerkraut fish with Thai cuisine for a unique take on a classic. This table full of Southeast Asian dishes are the new offerings of a famous Taiwanese restaurant brand, seeking to capitalize on interest in global cuisine.

Yunlin County promotes locally grown garlic with recipe ideas

When people eat sausage, fried foods, stir fry, or make a sauce, they often add a few cloves of garlic of enhance the flavor. The largest garlic-growing area in Taiwan is in Yunlin County, where 4,700 hectares is cultivated annually. Since harvest season is upon us, the county commissioner invited chef Chang Chia-hsien to demonstrate two recipes showcasing the fresh, fragrant, and spicy character of Yunlin garlic.

Under the chef’s instruction, Yunlin County Commissioner Chang Li-shan mixes a sauce together to drizzle over slices of pork belly. The secret ingredient is minced garlic grown right here in Yunlin County.

Our garlic is not only low-calorie, but is also chock-full of allicin. It can improve your body’s natural resistance and immunity. Every year during harvest season is the best time to eat Yunlin garlic.

Take freshly peeled garlic, then add salt and some basil, and soak it in olive oil. All you can see are layers of black pepper and garlic. Although it hasn’t come out of the oven yet, the aroma of this basil garlic confit is impossible to miss.

Garlic isn’t just used in cooking or for eating fresh. It’s also in a lot of processed foods. During the pandemic two or three years ago, our garlic essence also sold very well, since it boosts immunity.

Each head of fresh Yunlin garlic is fragrant, pungent, and spicy. It’s loved by not only the locals, but most of the garlic eaten around Taiwan comes from here, as Yunlin accounts for 90% of all garlic grown in the country.

We produce $300 to $400 million worth of garlic every year. Each hectare can produce about 10 tonnes. Since the weather was a bit colder last year and this year, it was very good for garlic production.

Yunlin garlic, with its special brand of pungent flavor, has now entered harvest season. It’s the best time to buy. As long as it’s well ventilated, garlic can be stored for six months, so you can stock up now without worrying about it going to waste.

Car traveling through Fubao Wetlands caught in high tide

During a drive through the Fubao Wetlands, one car got caught in the intertidal zone during high tide. Passengers shouted for the driver to turn around, but they instead tried to push forward. Water splashed onto the hood of the car as the tide continued to rise. A video of the scene later surfaced, but since the police did not receive any report, the people involved are believed to be unscathed.

The car is moving forward, but the road is completely covered with water.

The sea has entirely enveloped the car, now trapped by the high tide. The passengers desperately shout to turn around, but the driver ignores them and pushes forward.

Right after saying this, the driver steps on the gas, and water splashes onto the hood of the car.

This thrilling scene took place in Changhua County’s Fubao Wetlands, where one group of people drove into the intertidal zone without paying attention to the tide. They got caught in high tide and were nearly washed away by the sea. The passenger sounds terrified, but the driver seems calm and confident.

You can’t even see the road in the video. I always check first, so I know that the tide goes out in the morning and comes back in around midday. Otherwise I wouldn’t dare go.

The Changhua County police didn’t receive any report about the incident, so it’s believed that the driver and passengers all came out unscathed, albeit a little shaken. The tide is a force of nature that should be respected, especially in unfamiliar areas.
