Centenarian shuttler Lin Yu-mao shows skill at World Masters Games

One of the most-watched players at this year’s World Masters Games is 104-year-old badminton player Lin Yu-ma. People are duly impressed by his strength and agility, not believing that he’s a centenarian. Apart from badminton, Lin also practices tai chi and is part of a touring choir. Let’s take a glimpse into his busy schedule.

Serving backhand, stable as a statue, Lin Yu-mao stands out on the court in his bright red shirt. The words printed on it are just as conspicuous: Guinness World Record holder for oldest badminton player.

In badminton, if there’s a smash or save, people applaud like crazy. I like this kind of atmosphere. So I started to play at 50.

104-year-old Lin plays badminton every week, rain or shine. For over 50 years, shuttlers have played with this centenarian and don’t dare go easy on him.

Lin loves the color red, since it reflects his passion for life. His 97-year-old wife, on the other hand, loves green. They paint quite a picture sitting side by side.

We get along so well. We’re still in love. The campus beauty with the strapping young man. We’re just right for each other.

Lin, who likes to call himself an old rascal, has never lost his love of adventure. He rode motorcycles from age 30 to 100, and he’s been all over Taiwan.

I rode my bike until I was 100. After that, my daughter told me I couldn’t anymore. So now I take taxis. But I still get the itch. Having your own motorbike is so convenient. It’s nice to have when taking a girl on a date.

He might be old, but he’s certainly young at heart. At 95 he got a phone, and uses Line and WeChat to keep in touch with friends and stay busy.

I gave one to the old man when he was 95. I told him I’m giving you this phone. You can send messages on Line. China uses WeChat. So now he sends out all kinds of messages on WeChat. He’s sending messages and chatting every day. Gosh, he’s so adamant. Even better at it than the kids.

Apart from badminton, Lin also practices tai chi and sings in a choir. He truly embodies the spirit of always staying active, always learning, always moving, and living to the fullest.

今年的世壯運，104歲的羽球選手林友茂，絕對是最耀眼的參賽者之一，除了他的年齡，更讓人驚呼的是他的體力和靈活度，完全不像是個百歲人瑞，林友茂除了打羽球，還練太極拳，參加合唱團巡演，帶您一窺他充實又忙碌的樂活人生。

反手發球，架式十足，球場上一身紅的林友茂格外顯眼，衣服上的大字更吸睛，金氏世界紀錄最年長羽球員。

“打羽毛球，如果有一個殺球、救球，掌聲如雷，所以我喜歡這種氣氛，所以我從50歲開始，改打羽毛球”

104歲的林友茂每週風雨無阻打羽球，超過50多年，球友和百歲人瑞一起打球，不敢掉以輕心。

林友茂最愛紅色，如同他對生命的熱情，97歲的太太則偏愛綠色，兩個人一紅一綠並肩坐著，畫面看起來俏皮又可愛。

林友茂自稱「老頑童」，從年輕到老，瘋狂愛玩的心，從來沒變過，30歲開始騎野狼機車騎到100歲，全台跑透透。

“我野狼騎到100歲，兒女說不給我再騎，所以我現在改搭計程車，但是心會癢，自己有摩托車很方便，幽會女朋友也方便”

人會老，但心可以不老，林友茂95歲開始玩3C，透過LINE、微信，交友滿天下，忙得不得了。

“他95歲的時候，我拿給老頑童，我說這個手機給你，你可以打LINE，然後中國用微信，結果呢，微信通得廣播四海，他每天就是發訊息，互相交流，哎唷，玩得爐火純青，比年輕人還優秀”

除了打羽球，練太極拳，林友茂還加入合唱團練唱，具體實踐了活到老、學到老、動到老，「樂活」到老！

These weapons likely contained Agent Orange or other rainbow-colored chemicals, which devastated forests, leaving the land gray and making it easier to identify soldiers’ locations.

This work is by Joseph Kosuth, a pioneer of Conceptual Art. Kosuth’s Titled (Art as Idea as Idea) [Question] (1967) is part of his Conceptual Art series, where he explores the relationship between language and art.

World Masters Games crowds stimulate local service industry

Fresh clams and squid are stir-fried in a red sauce.

Spices are added to the pan, followed by a seafood broth. After broiling for a while, mussels and shrimp are added, then the dish is baked in an oven.

Eight minutes later, a Spanish paella is ready to be served. Paired with a Greek beef stew, it’s a veritable Mediterranean feast. Welcoming the World Masters Games, restaurants around Taipei Dome are offering special deals on their dishes, enticing athletes and spectators to come try.

During matches or after they finish, people will come to our restaurant to celebrate or have a group meal. According to past experiences with games like this, our customers will increase by 10 to 20% on average.

Some chain and local restaurants are offering free fries or shrimp chips when customers show their World Masters Games’ ticket stub. Over 2,000 partner stores are offering special deals, such as a hot pot restaurant that is offering buy-one-get-one milk tea, and cafes that are giving members a 10% discount.

With summer on the horizon, warmer temperatures and sporting activities have increased sales of cold drinks and ice cream by 20 to 30%.

In the past during sporting events, we noticed that more people come to our store. Spectators want to buy things like Coke or other drinks, or even cold drinks and ice cream, and some snacks too. They are the main force driving our sales.

Department stores are not far behind, offering 20% off on famous sports brands and NT$300 in rewards when customers spend over NT$3,000.

With the COMPUTEX technology exhibition and World Masters Games taking place at the same time, hotels around Taipei Dome are nearly fully booked. The Eslite Hotel had no rooms left on opening weekend, and the United Hotel is over 90% full. The W Hotel is also fully booked for the second half of May. The business boom from the World Masters Games has officially begun.

Jensen Huang calls US chip export control under Joe Biden ‘a failure’

Nvidia held a press conference Wednesday morning at COMPUTEX Taipei, during which the CEO, Jensen Huang himself fielded questions from international press and industry analysts. Asked about Nvidia’s US$5.5 billion in losses due to chip export controls, Huang called former US President Joe Biden’s export ban "a failure." He said not only did the policy not achieve its goal of stymieing China’s AI development, it conversely spurred Chinese innovation. He said in order for the US to stay ahead, it must expand its sphere of influence.

I think there’s a resetting of the trade around the world. And whenever it settles down, the industry will readjust. So I have every confidence things will work out.

Asked about Nvidia’s $US5.5 billion in recognized losses due to the US’ export ban of its advanced H20 chips, Huang said the loss was indeed larger than that of its peers. Additionally, Nvidia’s market share in China plummeted from 95% to 55% in the span of only four years. He said this goes to show that chip export controls did not achieve the goal of stifling China’s AI advancement. Even more so, opportunities went to China’s Huawei and startups. Huang said the US should instead expand its scope of influence, were it to retain its edge. He also said that as China’s chip market is expected to reach US$50 billion, Nvidia should be allowed to enjoy a slice, so that it can contribute to the US’ tax revenue and create job opportunities. As for how he believes Nvidia should balance itself between the US, China and Taiwan, this is what he has to say.

I want our partners to succeed. I want our industry to grow. The technology that we build can unite people. This is very important technology, and I want to make sure that people have access to it, they understand it, and that we can be helpful to them.

Recently, Huang announced plans to expand Nvidia’s Taipei branch, not only because of a growing number of employees but also to service its 350 business partners in Taiwan. He also said that as the world races to deploy AI, it signifies that AI is an important basic infrastructure like electricity and the Internet. And as such, Taiwan plays an important role in the AI ecosystem.

Taiwan needs to have AI infrastructure here. And it’s really important that Taiwan also takes advantage of this opportunity to jump into AI research. This is a new beginning. And I have every confidence Taiwan will do very well.

Speaking of geopolitics, Huang said he wishes for stability in the world, no matter where. As global trade undergoes restructuring, the AI giant is prudently planning its next steps, too.

Chinese news anchor breaks taboo on Taiwan’s statehood

Footage of a news anchor from Chinese state media outlet CCTV has gone viral after she mistakenly referring to Taiwan and China as "two countries." The slip of the tongue happened during a live broadcast on Beijing’s response to President Lai Ching-te’s speech to mark his first year in office. The anchor’s reference to Taiwan as a country is seen as a political taboo in China, sparking a wave of online jokes and concern about the anchor’s fate.

The CCTV anchor was presenting a story about China’s response to President Lai Ching-te’s address when she accidentally referred to Taiwan as a country.

Netizens joked that she accidentally spilled the truth on TV, saying that she’s fully aware that there are two countries across the strait but that she was forced to say that Taiwan is part of China. Others joked that they will miss her.

Saying “two countries,” is treating Taiwan, the ROC, as a country of its own. That’s a major taboo for the CCP, and I’m afraid the anchor might face consequences for that.

Could the news anchor face a punishment? A former anchor for CCTV previously revealed there are four degrees of demerits. Mild ones would result in a fine, while severe ones could result in dismissal. With a topic as sensitive as cross-strait relations, to say “two countries” even as a slip of the tongue is a major taboo in China.

So, is she alright? Only in an authoritarian regime like China’s do we have to worry about a news anchor’s personal wellbeing, and whether she’ll be persecuted by the government. We are of course delighted, as Taiwan and China are indeed two separate countries, one on each side of the strait.

A DPP lawmaker voiced concern for the news anchor’s safety, for accidentally speaking an objective fact regarding cross-strait affairs.
