Two percussionists from Taiwan’s renowned Ju Percussion Group are holding a recital in Taipei. Tai Han-chih and Kao Han-yen will be presenting original pieces and works that blend instruments from various countries at the National Concert Hall in Taipei. FTV reporter Stephany Yang takes us in for a look!

This type of concert repertoire and concerto is rare both in the market and around the world. I am also interested in the hand drum. I wanted to explore what it would feel like to bring together instruments from Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, and the handpan from Switzerland.

Kao Han-yen will perform a world premiere of his piece "Origins and Legends – The Poetry of Dawu Mountain," inspired by Taiwan’s natural scenery.

I incorporated many pentatonic scales in this piece to depict the breathtaking scenery of Dawu Mountain. The difficulty level is quite high, as the marimba part requires playing with six mallets. I think this is the first time ever that I’ve felt this much pressure.

The concert marks a significant milestone in the solo careers of these talented musicians. The Ju Percussion Group, founded by Ju Tzong-ching, has nurtured many outstanding artists, including Tai and Kao, who will perform their concert at the National Concert Hall in Taipei on June 5.

"這樣子類型的音樂會的曲目，協奏曲在市面上、在整個世界上都是很少見的。我自己對於手鼓也很有興趣，我想說，把來自拉丁美洲的樂器、來自中東的樂器來自非洲的樂器，還有手碟是來自瑞士的樂器，我們結合在一起，是什麼樣的感覺。"

高瀚諺將台灣自然風景為靈感的作品《起源與傳說-大武山之詩篇》在獨奏會首演。

"我是用了滿多五聲音階在裡面，在描寫大武山的美景。這首曲子的難度是木琴都要演奏六隻棒子，我人生中好像是第一次壓力這麼大。"

對這些才華洋溢的音樂家而言，這場音樂會是他們獨奏生涯中的重要里程碑。朱打擊樂團由朱宗慶創辦，培育出許多優秀音樂家，其中就包括戴含芝及高瀚諺。他們將於6月5日在台北國家音樂廳舉辦音樂會。

Marshallese president drenched at presidential reception

President Lai Ching-te on Tuesday morning welcomed Marshallese President Hilda Heine with military honors, as customary. Unfortunately, it began to rain just as the ceremony began. Some have criticized the Presidential Office for letting the foreign dignitary stand in the pouring rain. The Presidential Office responded that they had not expected it to rain with all information available to them at the last minute possible.

High-ranking officials stand by at the Presidential Office square. They’re waiting to welcome Marshallese President Hilda Heine with military honors. At 10:30 a.m., it starts to rain all of a sudden.

Despite the rain, all the military customs went on as usual. Together, the presidents of Taiwan and the Marshall Islands completed the ceremony in a little more than two minutes in the rain. They only start wiping their faces after getting shelter.

As with military protocol, umbrellas are not used during a state salute. Some have criticized the Presidential Office for not moving the ceremony indoors, as would have been done when the weather is not ideal. The Presidential Office responded that there was indeed an indoor option, but the decision must be made one hour prior at the latest. At 9:45, they judged that it wouldn’t rain at 10:30, which is why the state salute was performed outdoors.

As the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, if the Honor Guard is already out in the rain, the commander-in-chief can’t possibly hold an umbrella. To be frank, the commander-in-chief would be unfit to lead in that case.

Last year, when Lai made a state visit to the Marshall Islands, the country was in the midst of a rainy spell, but almost by miracle, it stopped raining when the president arrived. It’s just too bad that it’s in reverse this time.

Mountaineer sets record after hiking 100 peaks in 34 days

Extreme outdoor sports enthusiast Ku Ming-cheng previously managed to hike 40 peaks in just eight days and 16 hours. For his next challenge, he tackled all 100 of Taiwan’s main summits in 34 days, setting a new record in the history of Taiwanese mountaineering.

By 1:20 in the afternoon, extreme sports enthusiast Ku Ming-cheng makes it to his 100th summit. A few other hikers were already waiting there to welcome him.

Standing proudly at the top of Beidawu Mountain, Ku celebrates completing yet another personal challenge.

Most people get exhausted after hiking up just a few mountains. Hiking 100 peaks at once, one after another, is even more difficult. But I’m always looking for a challenge. I want to see how much people can endure.

61-year-old Ku loves extreme outdoors sports. In 2022, he tried for the record of hiking the central mountain range in the shortest time possible, managing to summit 40 peaks in just eight days and 16 hours. This year, he set his sights on Taiwan’s top 100 mountains, starting from the Xueshan East Peak. Over 34 days, he was able to climb all 100—940km in total with cumulative elevation of 97,700m, setting yet another record.

It’s a test of my physical ability, plus I want to generate discussion of the 100 peaks. This is my small wish.

This was actually Ku’s third attempt at speed climbing the 100 peaks. The first two times he encountered heavy snow and winds, and one of the times was when the April 3 earthquake hit Hualien, forcing him to call it off early. But this year he was back with a vengeance. He still encountered days of heavy rain, mist, cold, and damaged paths, making the journey hazardous.

He hiked for 10 to 20 hours every day, challenged by the interplay of physical limitations and weather conditions. An overworked spine, excruciating foot pain, and sleepless nights made him doubt himself. But fortunately, with supply runs and backup, he was able to overcome every obstacle. The hikers he met along the way also gave him valuable encouragement.

Now he’s managed to achieve the impossible, adding another feather to his laden cap.

Chou Ming-han’s 10th year anniversary exhibition

Chou Ming-han is a Taiwanese artist specializing in Eastern gouache painting and calligraphy. His 10th-anniversary exhibition is being held at the Vaikuntha Art Center in Taipei. FTV reporter Stephany Yang spoke to Chou to find out more about his works and aspirations for the future.

This work reflects Chou Ming-han’s 10th year as an artist, drawing inspiration from the breathtaking scenery of Alishan, as well as peacocks and fish. Chou utilized Eastern gouache, an art form that blends traditional Chinese painting techniques with elements of Japanese and Western gouache styles.

This artwork is created using gouache painting techniques, blending mineral pigments with an adhesive to create the final work. For this 10th-anniversary exhibition, the main visual is centered around this piece. This work encapsulates my theme by integrating various animals and elements of nature into the work. These animal motifs have become characteristics of my creations over the past decade, each reflecting my inner state. However, the story’s main point isn’t just the vibrant animals—it lies in the tree roots.

This work depicts a tranquil lake nestled within a forest. Through this work, Chou hopes to evoke a sense of serenity for viewers.

I drew inspiration from mountains and water, allowing their essence to shape the composition. My background in traditional Chinese ink painting deeply influences my work, as personal experiences and outdoor sketches inspire me and fill my mind with countless landscape scenes. However, this particular piece is not tied to any specific place—it is purely my imagination. Much like the way technology processes data, I applied a similar approach, using my thoughts to construct a worry-free sanctuary. By adding the white peacocks I have painted over the years, the artwork ultimately evokes the serene atmosphere of a forest of serenity.

Chou started learning painting when he was in high school. Since then, he has showcased his work in over 100 exhibitions worldwide, blending modern elements with traditional techniques. His art spans various mediums, including ink, mineral pigments, and watercolor. In his 10-year exhibition, Chou delves into his artistic reflections on nature, showcasing paintings of animals like white peacocks, eagles, and deer.

Chiang Kai-shek gets in drag to join Ruby-chan meme trend

Former KMT leader Chiang Kai-shek has gotten a drag makeover at the hands of the students at Taipei’s Chien Kuo High School. A 220cm-tall statue of Chiang on the school campus has been dressed in white to resemble Ruby-chan from the popular internet meme. With her signature pigtails, the J-pop idol look is only the latest in what is now an annual tradition for graduates-to-be. The designer says this “Ruby Chiang” could actually open up a third option for transitional justice in Taiwan.

A special guest is here wearing a dreamy white dress, curly pigtails and even an earset mic, ready to put on a show. This is the statue of Chiang Kai-shek at the entrance of Chien Kuo High School in Taipei, which has been dragged up into a meme superstar.

The meme comes from a cute and catchy Japanese song by AiScReam, and Chiang looks exactly like Ruby-chan herself, with hat and all, becoming Ruby Chiang. The dress-up choice won a poll at the school, and the outfit came together in less than two weeks.

We had a problem, which is that Chiang Kai-shek was too big. Look at him, the statue is 220cm tall. We cut up the clothes and they still weren’t big enough. But thankfully, the Japanese club came through and they went to Dadaocheng to buy fabric, and then we patterned it into a garment.

Dressing up the statue in fancy dress has become a graduation tradition at Chien Kuo High School. In 2010, Chiang was turned into an astronaut, and has since donned on costumes of Jia Baoyu from the “Dream of the Red Chamber” and even Thanos from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This year, the dress-up was more than just for fun.

I hope that this can open up a third path ahead for transitional justice. I think there are more than just the two crude and violent options of preserving and destroying. By changing his outfit, we can change the tall and mighty impression of a former leader.

The designer says the different costumes can perhaps offer an alternative approach to transitional justice. Dressing Chiang in feminine apparel also aims to break down gender stereotypes and get viewers to reflect as the teens get ready to enter adulthood.

TSMC CEO very confident about long-term prospects

TSMC held a shareholder meeting in Hsinchu on Tuesday, with many attending. For many shareholders, buying TSMC shares is a family affair. Meanwhile, CEO C. C. Wei says the company’s prospects are “very, very good” well into the coming five to ten years. He also shuts down rumors that the company is currently considering building a fab in the Middle East.

TSMC CEO C. C. Wei’s brief but powerful response at the shareholder meeting shows his confidence in the company in the long-term. The event in Hsinchu is attended by hundreds, with some even coming from as far south as Kaohsiung.

It’s normal for share prices to fluctuate. I still feel very confident about TSMC, the sacred mountains that protect the nation. All three generations in my family hold TSMC shares. We’re fully behind TSMC.

A shareholder asks if TSMC’s additional pledged investments in the US will risk tech leaks. This is Wei’s response.

In two words: certainly not. If our technologies were so easily stolen, then TSMC wouldn’t be where we are today. Our technologies are so advanced that not one person or even 10 or 100 people will be able to steal them.

Whether the US will impose tariffs remains a looming risk, but Wei says they will not have much direct impact, whereas the NTD’s sharp rise of nearly 8% against the greenback has dealt a huge blow.

The net profit margin fell by almost 3%. With a denominator of 3 trillion, you’ll understand what I mean. There’s not much we can do, except keep pushing ourselves and stay on top of the game worldwide, so we can sell at a price that reflects our true value.

Since last year, it’s rumored that TSMC is considering building a fab in the Middle East, due to Nvidia’s interest in the region. Wei also gives his response.

Seriously, there’s no other way to describe this, other than rumors are truly abounding. Last time I already had to respond to the Intel rumor, and now there’s the Middle East, and maybe Africa will be next. So for that question, again, no.

Wei also says that although current international affairs are filled with uncertainties, TSMC still receives more orders than the company can handle at full capacity. Meanwhile, he adds, that the company is already delivering chips used in humanoid robots. He says that the company expects another year of strong growth in 2025.
