To raise awareness about animal conservation, a tourism group and a cultural foundation organized a competition, inviting students to introduce endangered animals. FTV reporter Stephany Yang spoke with the winners!

Last year, I talked about my favorite animal—the giraffe. This year, I introduced the pangolin. Both helped me learn more about animal conservation. I think this event is very meaningful.

Wearing an explorer outfit, another student walked around the park introducing pangolins in English, also emphasizing how people can help protect these rare creatures.

My presentation was about the Taiwanese pangolin. I’m an animal lover, so I would like to let a lot of people learn about pangolins, where do they live, and how do we protect them. We hope that these animals can live and stay well on this earth.

To raise awareness about endangered animals, a tourism group and a cultural foundation organized a competition, inviting children to create short films introducing endangered animals. This year’s theme focuses on rhinos, pangolins, and ring-tailed lemur. The contest opened for the first time to international students, attracting submissions from the United States, Shanghai, and Macau — marking a record-breaking number of entries.

All of our judges are recommended from across industry, government, and academia. They are professionals in their fields. So for any student to make it to the finals, it means they have put in a great deal of time and effort.

Now in its third year, the “Zookeeper Junior” hopes to raise public awareness about wildlife and encourage more children to learn about endangered animals.

Meanwhile, former commander of the US Pacific Command, Dennis Blair said rather than focus on finer details such as combat tactics or the results of the game, Taiwan must instead prioritize regular drills. The Taiwanese generals, for their part, reiterated the importance of defense capabilities and the will to deter the enemy, and that Taiwan must prepare for the worst, that is, if no allies came to its assistance.

Eric Chu launches new campaign to counter moves to recall KMT lawmakers

Motions to recall 31 KMT lawmakers have garnered enough supporting signatures from the public to be put to formal votes. However, the corresponding figure for DPP lawmakers is zero. KMT chair Eric Chu has put the blame firmly on Taiwan’s judiciary, saying it has unfairly targeted opposition politicians who are trying to recall ruling party legislators. He announced that his party would launch what he termed a "patriots’ movement," adding that major KMT figures such as mayors, county commissioners and Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu would be involved.

The opposition KMT is launching a retaliatory recall campaign to counter campaigns to recall KMT lawmakers, but so far has been unable to get enough supporting signatures to get a recall of any DPP lawmaker approved. Taipei City Councilor Dai Hsi-chin and KMT lawmaker Hsieh Lung-chieh have apologized for the party’s alleged involvement in signature forgery. But KMT Chair Eric Chu, believed to be behind the scandal as party leader, has put all the blame on the judiciary.

Try recalling a ruling party politician and it’s a major judicial incident. There will definitely be full-on interrogations and mass arrests. But if you want to recall an opposition politician, no matter how many mistakes there are, they will turn a blind eye.

Bus driver waits late every night to ensure student returns safely

One ninth grader at Fangyuan Junior High in Changhua always catches the last bus home after staying late at school every day. He initially thought he just had great timing. But one day after he was out sick, his teacher told him that the night before, the bus driver was out waiting for him at the stop. That’s how he found out that he had a secret guardian angel.

A student from Changhua’s Fangyuan Junior High School waits outside at the bus stop in front of campus as part of his daily routine.

After entering his third year, he started staying until 8:30 every night to study. After that, he would take the bus home. But the last bus every night is also at 8:30.

The student lives in Erlin Township in a relatively remote location. He thought he was just lucky to catch the last bus every day. But little did he know, someone was looking out for him.

One time I stayed home, and the next day the director told me that the night before, a bus driver was there waiting for me. Waiting just for me. He asked the teacher where I was. I really want to thank him. I’m so touched.

We also just found out that this driver has been looking after our students like this for a long time.

The driver in question is this man, Yang Wen-tui. He noticed that the student would take the same bus every day, and was the only one waiting at the stop. So every time he stops there, he waits especially for him to board.

I usually give him a ride, so I’ll pay attention to see if any regulars aren’t there. I have kids myself, and they also take the bus to school. I’m afraid he won’t be able to get back if he doesn’t catch it. So this is the attitude I bring to my job.

This kind-hearted driver lights the way home. On the eve of his graduation, the student personally wrote a note to Yang thanking him for every second he waited over the past year, even though he didn’t have to. Turns out he had his very own guardian angel all along.

Taitung vegetable seller awarded honorary doctorate for lifetime of philanthropy

Chen Shu-chu has spent her life serving others, donating tens of millions of her proceeds from selling vegetables over the years. For her kindness, National Taitung University recently awarded her an honorary doctorate. At a recent graduation ceremony, she encouraged graduates to face their challenges head-on and thanked the school for not giving up on her. As a humble grandmother who sells vegetables by the side of the road, she said she almost fainted when she heard she was getting a degree.

Wearing a graduation gown and cap, 74-year-old vegetable seller Chen Shu-chu receives an honorary doctorate from National Taitung University, emotion written across her face.

Thank you to the university president. All the teachers, professors, and students, no one gave up on this vegetable-selling grandma. When I was asked to come receive this honorary doctorate, I almost fainted.

At first she declined the offer, but the school persuaded her by saying it was for the sake of spreading the love and using her own experience to inspire students.

You’ll encounter difficulties in this life and things that aren’t as good as you’d like them to be. But you just need patience. If you make it through, the world’s your oyster.

After graduating from elementary school, Chen’s mother passed away, so she left school and started selling vegetables to help her family. She worked hard every day, yet still insisted on giving back to her community. She gave money to build a library and sponsored hospitals, donating tens of millions over her life.

No matter how advanced AI gets, it will never overtake the brilliance of humanity. What Grandma Shu-chu has been able to do far surpasses what AI is currently capable of. Although Grandma Shu-chu is only an elementary-school graduate, I think in everyone’s minds, she has the greatest intelligence of all.

Even though she lacks academic qualifications, Chen sets the best of examples for future generations with her wisdom and kind heart.

Amcham Taiwan says new, planned tariffs for Taiwan unfair

The American Chamber of Commerce in Taiwan released its 2025 White Paper on Tuesday. Besides its usual recommendations for the Taiwanese government, it called on the Trump administration to remove new and proposed tariffs on Taiwanese goods, saying they, quote "unfairly penalized" a democratic partner. It also called for approved American weaponry sales to be delivered to Taiwan as soon as possible and for Taiwanese companies to join US defense supply chains.

American Chamber of Commerce in Taiwan President Carl Wegner and Chairperson Dan Silver are holding a press conference releasing the chamber’s 2025 Taiwan White Paper, which includes a total of 26 industry recommendations.

Taiwan should remain proactive in seeking deeper economic engagement with the United States, including continued efforts to secure targeted tariff relief and advance a double taxation agreement.

Amcham believes that reciprocal tariffs are unfair to Taiwan, which it calls a democratic partner, and also greatly increases costs to American companies and consumers. It calls on the Trump administration to remove new and proposed tariffs on Taiwanese goods and expedite arms sales.

Taiwan is stepping up. It has pledged to increase its defense spending to over 3% of GDP. We urge Washington to expedite delivery of previously approved arms packages, integrate Taiwanese companies into the US defense supply chains where feasible.

Amcham is calling for Taiwanese companies to be included in US defense supply chains to ensure Taiwan’s security. After all, Taiwan is caught in the throes of escalating geopolitical tensions.

YouTuber raises eyebrows with livestreams of trip to Shanghai

Taiwanese Internet celebrity Holger Chen has already uploaded several livestreams of his ongoing trip to Shanghai, since he arrived in the Chinese city on Tuesday evening. Netizens say some of the things he said were, quote "ridiculous." Wednesday marked the second day of Chen’s six-day visit, the purpose of which he said, was to serve as an "ambassador for peace" between Taiwan and China. A DPP city councilor slammed Chen, saying he’s participating in China’s psychological warfare against Taiwan.

YouTuber Holger Chen arrived in Shanghai, China on Tuesday evening. His first livestreamed video had him exclaim how the restroom in China had doors and was so trendy. Chen obviously had to use a VPN, despite previously insisting that China’s Great Firewall does not exist.

He’s obviously incorrect, judging from how glitched the livestreamed video is. Meanwhile, he does not disappoint with his reactions praising China while walking on the streets, despite being avowedly anti-CCP in the past.
