A Mexican-Taiwanese woman shares flavors of her childhood with local diners

Tucked away in a corner of Kaohsiung’s bustling Sanduo Shopping District, a small restaurant is serving up authentic Mexican food. The owner, a Taiwanese-Mexican woman, opened the restaurant to share the cherished dishes she learned from her Mexican mother and grandmother. Each dish served in the restaurant is filled with the flavors—and memories—of her childhood.

Onions, ground beef and other ingredients are tossed over high heat as the rich aromas fill the air.

In another pan, a dish topped with cheese and jalapeños is slowly grilled over an open flame. Every dish on the menu is something the owner enjoyed as a child.

Since I was little, we’d make simple Mexican dishes at home, like salsa and rice pudding. Those were our everyday meals.

Yayu’s mother is Mexican and her father is Taiwanese. She grew up in Mexico and moved to Taiwan at the age of 10. Wanting to preserve and share the cooking traditions passed down from her mother and grandmother, she opened this restaurant in Kaohsiung’s Sanduo shopping area to bring authentic Mexican flavors to Taiwan.

Because many of our ingredients are hard to find here in Taiwan, my family ships them to me. This is our crispy fish taco. The tortilla is made from corn that is ground down and fried. The tacos are topped with fresh vegetables and our special homemade sauce.

The tortillas used for the tacos are handmade daily, and paired with crispy fried fish and a unique sauce that creates a rich, layered flavor. The dishes have even drawn in foreign customers seeking a taste of home.

The distinctly decorated restaurant also occasionally hosts Mexican performances. Its joyful and vibrant atmosphere offers customers a taste of Mexico—no plane ticket needed.
