Woman transforms family pig farm into dessert workshop

2025-08-01

There’s a dessert workshop in Chiayi’s Xingang Township that was set up in an old pig farm. A lover of sweets, the owner would often make low-sugar cakes for her elderly grandmother. With guidance from the Chiayi County Labor and Youth Development Department, three years ago, she returned home to set up the workshop, where she teaches local people how to make desserts.

Hung I-chen stands before a class, earnestly teaching her elderly neighbors how to make cake.

I came back to start a business because my grandma has a chronic condition, so I wanted to make some cakes for her that are low in sugar. All my cakes are less sweet. Some people said they really like them and asked me to hold community baking classes for the elderly people here. They also said I’m really friendly, like their own grandchild.

Hung used to work as an accountant, but her love of desserts led her to pursue another career as a baker. She started as an apprentice at a chain bakery, and after seven years was able to become a sous chef. Three years ago, she was picked up by the Chiayi County Labor and Youth Development Department to start a business back in her hometown of Xingang, turning her family’s abandoned pig farm into a dessert workshop.

There’s a young kid who wanted to make a cake for his parents. His dad is a pineapple farmer in Minxiong, so he made a pineapple cake for his birthday and to wish for a good harvest.

Hung’s cakes are low in sugar and customizable. The decorations are also all done by hand and feature local designs.

Hung runs the entire workshop by herself, without any assistants. Her record is 70 cakes in one day. Although she has a lot of orders to fill, she still makes time to teach her neighbors how to bake, bringing joy to her community.

2025-08-01
