Man trapped in balcony dies as apartment goes up in flames

A deadly fire at a high-rise in Taichung resulted in the death of a resident on Tuesday night. A man tried to escape the blaze by rushing to his balcony on the 9th floor. By the time rescuers reached him, it was too late. Let’s hear more.

His girlfriend told us they had met two days ago, on Aug. 4 and they had an argument. She says she wasn’t at the scene when the fire happened.

The deceased had been involved in disputes with other residents about smoking in the apartment. Building management posted notices. The bathrooms are connected to the same ventilation system.
The man was apparently at home alone at the time of the fire. Investigators say it seems that the fire started between his bed and the balcony doors, and many cigarette butts were found at the scene. Though foul play has been ruled out for now, an investigation continues to find the exact cause.

台中市西區五權八街，5日深夜11點多，一棟集合式住宅9樓，發生火警，當時一名男子受困在自家陽台，逃生不及，等到被救出時，已經罹難。

“聽到好像是人家大小聲還是怎麼樣，在喊什麼名字，喊了兩三聲之後，就聽到爆炸聲”

“他的女朋友，剛剛我們有碰到面，她是說她兩天前才有跟他碰到面，在兩天前(8/4)，他們曾經有吵過架，女朋友自述她是沒有在現場的”

“過去(死者)曾經有因為抽菸，造成住戶爭論，管理室也有貼公告，因為這裡的廁所，管線是共通的”
據了解，事發當天男子確實獨自在家，火調小組調查，起火起疑似位在床墊與陽台落地窗之間的地面，現場還殘留多枚菸蒂，初步排除外力介入，不過詳細起火原因還有待進一步釐清。
