Taiwan’s World Games national team returns

The 2025 World Games in Chengdu, China have just wrapped up. This year, Team Taiwan won five golds, six silvers and four bronzes, making for the second largest medal haul ever for the World Games. One gold medalist even made a world record. On Monday night, the athletes returned to Taiwan and were welcomed home personally by Sports Administration head James Cheng.

Everyone’s so touched with Chiang Kai-chieh’s resolute willpower to fight until the end, and everyone’s so ecstatic about Yang Sen making a world record, he really brought honor to the Paiwan people. We hope that our team can also do well in the next World Games.

There’s a global powerlifting competition in Romania in November, which is also a very important event. After the World Games, I won’t just sit back and relax, because I must vigilantly prepare for that upcoming competition.

Another gold medalist, Liu Chiao-hsi for inline freestyle roller skating said she practiced six days a week before the games, and that she’s happy to reach her goal.

James Cheng thanked everyone for their stellar performance at the World Games and also expressed gratitude to the Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee for supporting the athletes. He also expressed hope that all the athletes will continue to do well.

2025成都世界運動會日前落幕。這一次台灣健兒，表現優異，拿下5金、6銀、4銅作收，創下境外最佳成績。昨天晚間有不少金牌好手回台，體育署長鄭世忠親自前往接機，感謝選手與教練的努力。金牌選手也表示開心奪金，會再接再勵，繼續備戰!

Dedicated surf lifesaving coach teaches kids how to stay safe at sea

There’s nothing like a dip in the sea to cool off in the scorching Taiwanese summer, but drowning and other accidents are sadly all too common. Tai Li-chun, a lifesaving coach who won two gold medals for surf lifesaving at the 2025 World Masters Games, has dedicated 20 years to his profession. We’ll take you to him teaching kids on the beach about how to stay safe in the surf.

A huge wave breaks and students are thrown to the ground and rolled around. It’s an exercise that tests the quickness of their reflexes when they’re in a surging wave, along with how to stay safe when the wave tosses them about.

The coach teaches students on the beach that the first step in learning surfing is learning how to prevent drowning and protecting yourself.

When you encounter wave spray, you need to push your board into the water. When white foam breaks, you need to keep pulling your chest out. The nose of the board should not go beyond your head, and you must maintain your balance on the surfboard.

As the waves come one after another, the students follow his instructions and hold onto their surfboards tightly. In the face of the waves, they don’t get flustered. The coach teaches them step by step how to ride the waves and surf, while still protecting themselves.

We want to make water activities safer for children and help them learn more about self-rescue. When facing the ocean, we should know how to protect ourselves: when to enter the water, and when not to.

Tai hopes that surf lifesaving will be promoted more widely in Taiwan so that accidents can be reduced effectively. After all, Taiwan is surrounded by the ocean. While embracing the ocean, we also need to learn to stay safe.

53 restaurants in Taiwan awarded Michelin stars this year

The latest Michelin Guide for Taiwan is out, featuring a total of 53 restaurants. There were three restaurants that kept their three stars, including Cantonese restaurant Le Palais for the eighth consecutive year. This year, the Michelin guide also evaluated restaurants in New Taipei and Hsinchu, but no restaurants from these municipalities were awarded. There was also not a single starred restaurant in Tainan, even though it’s supposedly the capital of Taiwanese cuisine.

A delectable roast duck is being fire-glazed with Cointreau. There’s also a tender roast baby duck on the platter. These are offered at Cantonese restaurant Le Palais, which got awarded three stars on the Michelin guide, for the eighth consecutive year! Other two Taiwan establishments that kept their three stars are contemporary restaurant Taïrroir and Singaporean restaurant JL Studio.

Other honorable mentions, which were awarded one star last year and two stars this year are EIKA, Yu Kapo and Restaurant A. The latter was founded by Chef Alain Huang, who previously served at the now closed Michelin two-star restaurant RAW. Under Huang’s artful touch, the roots, stems and leaves of seasonal vegetables are arranged into a garden landscape.

We’re grateful of Michelin’s seal of approval. But in the end, it’s all about working hard. Don’t think too much, just do it.

This year, a total of 7 restaurants got their first star. There’s aMaze, which offers a contemporary twist on predominantly Hangzhou-style Zhejiang cuisine. This dish combines Taiwanese-style chicken roll with pan-seared foie gras underneath a honeycomb crust, delivering bold layers and balance.

Another newly awarded restaurant is HoSu, which specializes in ingredients native to Taiwan, such as millet and aiyu jelly. Chef Ian Lee even shed a few happy tears when his restaurant received the award.

I had never thought I would win this honor. I was honestly quite shocked. But still, I think it’s only about doing what you’re supposed to do well. I froze a bit when asked to stay on the stage.

This year, a total of 53 restaurants were listed in the Michelin guide. And although restaurants in New Taipei and Hsinchu were evaluated for the first time, none were named in the guide. Meanwhile, not a single Tainan establishment received Michelin stars, despite the reputation of the city’s cuisine in Taiwan.

Chiayi senior still making chops by hand in 60-year-old shop

Nowadays, personal stamps for signing documents are almost all designed and engraved electronically. But one 87-year-old artisan in Chiayi, who has been running a store making chops for over 60 years, continues to handwrite every character, no matter the style. He then uses a traditional machine to engrave people’s names onto their very own chop. Versed in various kinds of calligraphy, he crafts each character beautifully, maintaining an art form that computers could never fully replicate.

Sitting at a table engrossed in his work, this 87-year-old artist carefully writes exquisite characters one stroke at a time.

This is chop artisan Hsu Chen-i, who runs his own store in Chiayi’s Fanshe Village. Every stamp in this shop was handwritten by Hsu, an expert in various forms of calligraphy. Once he has written the characters, he brings them to a traditional engraving machine, which uses a nail to carve out the characters to create a completely unique stamp.

For ordinary, normal ones like this we always have a reference book. There are many things we need to refer to. Now that we have been doing this for a while, we are more knowledgeable. I’m not at all familiar with modern technology. I just know how to carve stamps.

Most chops are designed electronically these days, but Hsu continues to handwrite each character for every stamp. Many people like the feeling of these handwritten characters and always come to him.

Hsu used to make around NT$20,000 a month from his business, but now he struggles to reach just NT$10,000. If his precious engraving machine were to break, he would have to retire.

Computers make precise stamps, but they lack the personal touch of handwritten characters. Hsu’s chops may be old-fashioned, but each one is guaranteed to be unique.

Exhibition explores how different species experience the world

Ever wondered how animals experience the world? A new exhibition in Taipei explores the concept of “Umwelt,” a term coined by zoologist Jakob von Uexküll to describe how different species experience the world through their sensory lenses. FTV reporter Stephany Yang takes us in for a look!

After choosing a card, visitors can project the animal onto the wall. The work reimagines creatures from the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species, giving them traits like big eyes, round faces and soft textures. The work hopes to reshape how we engage with often-overlooked endangered animals.

It’s designed to resemble a baby nursery, because many of us grew up seeing cute animals like puppies and kittens in such spaces. But the artist breaks away from that conventional image by decorating the nursery with lesser-known creatures—like bats or animals that live in the deep sea. What’s especially unique is the interactive element: you can choose the animal you want to see and have it projected onto the nursery-themed display in the background.

Another work explores the inner world of aliens and allows participants to generate their alien persona.

He has long been engaged in research related to aliens. For this exhibition, he created a specially designed device that allows participants to engage in a meditative experience and even generate their imagined alien persona. He also incorporated AI tools to explore and analyze human brainwaves as part of his investigation.

A new exhibition in Taipei explores the concept of “Umwelt,” a term coined by zoologist Jakob von Uexküll to describe how species experience the world through their sensory lenses. By utilizing various artistic and scientific techniques and technologies, the exhibition observes how cats, pigs, bats, whales, mice and more experience the world. Curator Lin Cheng-wei invited nine contemporary artists from Taiwan and abroad to create works by collaborating with the Institute of Molecular Biology at Academia Sinica, the National Center for Biomodels and the exhibition’s science consultant, evolutionary biologist Dr. Jeff Tseng.

Different animals possess different sensory systems, so their ways of perceiving the world vary greatly. Each species has its own worldview. This exhibition, curated by science and contemporary art curator Lin Cheng-wei, is unique in that it includes a scientific advisor, evolutionary biologist Jeff Tseng. During the preparation phase, the artists collaborated closely with this advisor to explore how their artworks could integrate scientific perspectives. The goal is to help the audience understand the sensory differences between humans and other animals, and to encourage us to see the world through the eyes of other species. One artist created a wearable device that highlights this idea. It allows the wearer to hear sounds that cats, bats or other animals hear. The artist wore the device continuously for 24 hours a day for about a month to experience how a cat senses the world.

The exhibition will be held at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipei until Sept. 7.
