Public and private sectors deliver supplies to flood-affected Guangfu Township

Guangfu Township in Hualien had just survived a devastating flash flood. Already, help is coming from people from all walks of life. A vendor from neighboring Fenglin got up at 3 a.m. to prepare his danbing, while a donor from New Taipei paid for a rice ball vendor’s entire stockpile to give out to locals. The Armed Forces and a charity group also set up stations to support locals through this tough time.

As soon as the danbing vendor from neighboring Fenglin Township knew of the extent of devastation Guangfu suffered, he decided to get up at 3 a.m. to prepare danbing for the residents there.

At least I have a little bit of something to give back to the good people of Guangfu. I can’t say it’s much, but these old friends of mine have been so good to me, so I must give something back.

A rice ball vendor from Ruisui Township to the south is also here to give out made-on-order rice balls. They can hardly catch a breath. There’s too many people affected by the flood.

The rice ball vendor was delivering on a New Taipei resident’s bulk order. She drove here overnight all the way from New Taipei and paid for the entire stockpile the vendor had.

I rushed here yesterday after hearing about the news and met up with them. I also called up some of our partners. We have around 500 portions today. There will be around as many tomorrow. If it’s not enough, we’ll travel downtown and stock up on ingredients.

There’s also freshly prepared steamed meat buns. The Tzu Chi Foundation also set up a booth to make lunchboxes for locals. A station was also set up at Da-Chin Primary School to receive all sorts of supplies. The state-owned water company also delivered a large water tank for sanitation purposes.

They’re in dire need of water, so we coordinated with the Armed Forces to dispatch showering vehicles. The Armed Forces was really fast. They arrived within half an hour, allowing people to shower. The water tanks are also available for the public’s use so they can do a quick clean.

Soldiers have already set up a mobile showering station connected to running water, so that flood survivors can at least be a step closer to normalcy.

花蓮馬太鞍溪堰塞湖溢流所造成的災情，目前都還在善後中，許多民間團體自動自發，送物資到災區，包括設立救助站、熱食供應站、發放物資給民眾！甚至有鳳林的蛋餅業者，凌晨三點就開始準備物資，老闆說：之前他在光復開店，後來回到鳳林，聽到光復有難、立刻要來幫忙，一句『他們都是我的朋友』，讓人超感動。

在鳳林賣蛋餅的業者，知道光復鄉災情嚴重，第一時間就準備了物資要來幫忙，凌晨三點就起來、準備熱騰騰的早餐。

“最起碼我對我們光復的鄉親，有回饋一點點的東西，我不敢說有回饋多少，可是這些老朋友以前對我實在太好了，所以我要回饋他們”

另一頭，是從瑞穗來的飯糰業者，業者包飯糰的手沒停過，現場民眾排隊領飯糰，彼此都很溫暖。

這是新北民眾知道災區困境，特地連夜開車趕過來，包了業者的攤位、送上滿滿的心意。

“昨天聽到消息之後就立刻趕下來，跟他們會合，然後召集我們的一些夥伴，今天大概就500份左右，明天也應該差不多數量，如果不夠的話，我們還會去市區補充材料”

還有人現場架起蒸籠蒸肉包，慈濟則是擺出桌檯，洗菜、切菜，要替災民們煮起熱騰騰的午餐，在大進國小的中繼站，各種物資湧入，還有自來水公司運來大水塔，要解決災民的清潔問題。

“一個急需用水的狀況，所以我們緊急協調國軍的沐浴車，那國軍速度非常快，半小時以內就趕到現場，讓民眾做一些緊急的沐浴，現在這個水車的水桶也已經讓民眾在使用，做一些比較簡單清潔的工作”

國軍弟兄撐起帳篷、拉起水管，要讓災民解決吃飽問題之後，也能夠清洗乾淨，確保盡早恢復正常生活。

Truck drivers save motorist from burning car along highway

At the northbound 185.9km marker on National Freeway 3 near Taichung’s Longjing Road, a sedan recently caught on fire after apparently crashing into a guardrail when the tire blew out. The driver was able to open the door, but couldn’t fully pull himself out. Just as the fire was about to engulf him, two truck drivers pulled over. One pulled the driver to safety, while the other extinguished the flames. The driver is fortunate he was sharing the road with these ordinary heroes.

On the shoulder of the highway, black smoke plumes from a sedan. The driver’s side door is open, but the driver is lying on the road unmoving. It’s then that raging flames shoot upward, engulfed in more black smoke.

Two oncoming truck drivers saw what was happening and pulled over to the side. A driver in blue rushes forward and pulls the man to safety. But his leg is on fire, so the driver uses his hands to smother any lingering flames at his own peril.

It seemed like he would catch on fire, so I rushed over and pulled him out. But when I got near, the flames started. I was afraid of the car exploding, so I quickly pulled him away before doing anything else.

Meanwhile, another truck driver with a fire extinguisher rushes over to put out the fire. Together, they were the guardian angels that saved this man’s life.

I didn’t think that much of it. I just saw a man lying there and thought, I also have people like that at home I care about. If you see something like this and can help, you should help. I just pulled him away.

I’ve heard people say that we truck drivers are cold-hearted. But we’re not really. If we can help, of course we will.

This accident happened on the northbound lane near the 185.9km marker on National Freeway 3, near Longjing Road in Taichung. The driver was taken to the hospital after suffering second-degree burns to his eyelids, right forearm, and left calf, but is now in stable condition.

Two Thai travel groups make exploratory visit to Taiwan

The Taiwan Visitors Association recently organized the first-ever Taiwan-Thailand Tourism Exchange Conference, inviting travel associations from Thailand to visit the National Palace Museum, Longshan Temple, and other destinations in Taiwan. Last year, over 400,000 people from Thailand visited Taiwan. For Thai visitors, eating Taiwanese food and visiting temples to experience the similar religious culture are two must-do activities.

26 representatives from the Thai Travel Agents Association and the Association of Thai Travel Agents are on a visit to Taiwan. Their first stop: the National Palace Museum.

Most of the antiquities we have come from the imperial collections of the last four dynasties, meaning they were kept close at hand by Chinese emperors.

As they were brought around to view the artifacts, association members excitedly brought out their phones to take pictures. Some also inquired carefully about ticket prices and tour fees to share with Thai travelers. And of course, you can’t forget about food. This restaurant serves dishes inspired by the museum’s meat-shaped stone and jadeite cabbage.

We’re checking things out again, because it’s already been three years since the pandemic and many people are traveling to different places. We hope people will also come to Taiwan, and more often. Two or three times in one year.

There are four direct flights between Taiwan and Thailand. In addition, Thai visitors to Taiwan, although it’s not long, they’ll stay for five to seven days on average. So there are more independent travelers to Taiwan these days. Since Thai people also love to come to Taiwan for the temples, we’ll take them to Longshan Temple and Qingshan Temple. Through this visit, they can gain a deeper cultural experience.

Through this exchange, the associations aim to build more bridges for future tourism cooperation between both countries.

Niko the poodle reports himself missing at Taichung police station

Here’s a heartwarming story that proves that dogs may be smarter than we think. A 12-year-old poodle named Niko found himself lost on the streets of Taichung, but instead of panicking, he walked straight into a police station to report himself missing. There, he was pampered by police officers with the best food and even a new leash as they looked for his owner.

A lone poodle struts into the police station, and is quickly brought in by an officer. After drying his fur from the rain, he took the dog to the vet to find his owner via microchip.

No chip made finding the owner much more difficult. To prevent another escape, the police officer bought the doggo a new leash at the pet shop next door.

Police officers posted pics of the dog online to try and find its owner. After the news spread, he finally arrived to take the dog back home. It turns out, the dog’s name is Niko and he’s already 12 years old. Nobody noticed he’d run outside.

Maybe the owner had taken him out on a walk near here, and it remembered the place. He came to find help, which shows just how smart the dog is. He reported himself missing. His owner found it really funny.

Niko got plenty of food and love from the police officer, who catered to his whims.

I bought a bag of dry dog food, but he seemed to not want to eat it, he didn’t want to eat dry food. So I opened a can and it was all gone in a blink.

Clever and with the taste of a gourmet, Niko was given only the very best in his brief stay at the station, making for a memorable story for all involved.

Lai heads to Hualien to inspect disaster recovery

President Lai Ching-te on Thursday afternoon headed to the advance command center in Hualien to hear a briefing on the recent flooding and disaster recovery operations. He also visited two other central government-affiliated agencies involved, including the water company’s local purification site. He also made a phone call directly to the Hualien County commissioner to find out what else is needed.

President Lai Ching-te on Thursday afternoon arrived at the Armed Forces’ advance command post in Hualien to hear a briefing from rescuers. But first, he wanted to know why the county government wasn’t at the meeting.

- Is the county government coming?
- Anyone representing the county government?

Once it’s clear that there wasn’t anyone from the county government, Lai asked an official to call the county commissioner personally.

- I thought they wanted you to come and give a presentation.
- But later I discovered that you couldn’t attend.

Turns out, the county commissioner, Hsu Chen-wei herself was in a meeting at the county-level command center nearby. Lai writes on a notepad during the phone call.

- Okay. Good luck to you.
- The county government must take action. Go! Go!

Hualien County Government must provide correct data. How many dead, how many injured, how many gone missing—you can’t keep revising the numbers because every data point is a livelihood. They must be clear on their needs. That’s the only way the central government will be able to help.

Opponents of KMT caucus whip and lawmaker for Hualien, Fu Kun-chi can’t figure out why he wouldn’t know of Lai’s whereabouts, since he had accompanied Premier Cho Jung-tai to inspect affected communities on the ground the day before. Now that the president made a phone call confronting the two local leaders, Fu and Hsu, they might as well touch base with him.

She hopes that there could be a designated fundraising bank account for Hualien County, especially for Guangfu Township. That is in the central government’s authority. I will ask the Executive Yuan to prioritize greenlighting the account, so that Hualien County Government can raise funds.

Many elder Indigenous residents were affected by the disaster. Council of Indigenous Peoples Deputy Minister Chen Yi-hsin has said he hopes the Armed Forces will help with cleanup.

I here also instruct and authorize—the rules in place didn’t allow this, but it’s to avoid contention, but this is also a particular case—so I’m authorizing Defense Minister Koo and the commander with the power to enter private residences to help, whether it’s to remove large furniture or to clean up the mud inside.

Because the scale of the disaster involves several central and local government agencies, the president’s visit included three stops to get the full picture of what’s needed for recovery. It’s going to be a heavy task requiring central and local coordination, even if they don’t always see eye-to-eye.
