Farmer develops hydropower generatorfor irrigation canals

Power issues have been taking center stage lately, as Taiwan transitions from traditional fuels. Small-scale hydropower plants are one of these trends in renewables. Former Nantou representative Tseng Ming-hsin developed a new system that can even generate power from a gentle flow of water, transforming any irrigation canal into a miniature power plant.

Water gurgles its way through this machine. It may not look like much, but there’s more to it than meets the eye.

This is a “floating” hydropower generator for canals developed by former Nantou representative Tseng Ming-hsin. It can generate power even from gentle flows of water, turning irrigation canals into small power plants.

This one was slightly altered. It can generate 50 kilowatts every hour. It’s more stable than both solar and wind, and costs nothing to build. It’s environmentally friendly. It won’t affect the flow of water in the canal.

Compared with wind power, this small hydropower station is more convenient, environmentally friendly, and cost effective. Even in gentle-flowing water, it can still capture the energy to drive the generator. In addition to irrigation canals, it is also suitable for use in rivers, rain ditches, tailraces, and other areas. Its modular design also allows it to be assembled like building blocks.

If many machines are strung together, they can make full use of the water. After generating electricity here, it can generate more here, then again there. This is the essence of the contraption. Its most essential feature.

Tseng has already gotten a patent on his machine. This small-scale hydropower generator is simple, low-cost, and has little environmental impact—perfect for Taiwan’s energy transition.

台灣能源問題備受關注,近年更積極推動能源轉型,其中小水力發電也成為再生能源發展的新趨勢,前南投市民代表曾明炘投入研究,研發出一套發電系統,在平緩的水流中也能發電,這也讓一條水圳,變身成一座發電廠。

潺潺流水,經過機器,發出轟隆隆聲,這台設備,看似不起眼,但千萬別太小看它。

前南投市民代表曾明炘,研發的這項,"在槽式水中浮沉水力發電系統",在平緩的水流中也能發電,讓水圳變身成一座發電廠。

這台機器再稍微修改一下,可以達到50 KW,每小時。這比太陽能、比風電都還穩定,它0營建費用,它友善環境,它不會去影響到灌溉溝渠的水流。”

相比於風力發電,小水力發電應更加便捷、環保、成本更低,能在緩水流下,捕捉動能,進一步驅動發電機,除了灌溉圳渠外,也適合利用在河川、排水道、水力發電廠尾水等區域進行串聯發電,且採模組化設計,就像積木一樣,能夠自由拼接。

“串聯的話,才能形成水的充分利用,這裡發完電,接著再來這裡發(電)、發完電再來,這就是這個機器的精神,一個最精華的地方。”

目前此系統,已經獲得專利,小水力發電,簡便、成本低、對環境干擾小,也大大推動,台灣的綠能轉型。
