Customer finds silica gel in drink from Kaohsiung cafe

A Kaohsiung café customer recently found an unpleasant surprise in their drink. They felt something crunchy in the drink, at first mistaking it for hazelnut only to discover it was actually silica gel desiccants. Packets of these clear little balls are often found in snacks to absorb moisture, but always with a warning not to eat them. The café said they accidently mixed up the desiccant with cocoa powder and apologized profusely.
For many people, a strong cup of coffee is the best way to kickstart the day. But one Kaohsiung café customer recently found something strange in their morning cocoa.
Small, clear balls rise to the surface. But these aren’t tapioca pearls. They’re silica gel desiccants. A customer ordered a hazelnut chocolate drink and first thought the crunchy addition was hazelnuts, but soon discovered the unfortunate truth.

It’s scary to accidently swallow silica gel because people worry it could affect their health. Yet the customer said the store manager only gave a refund and told them to monitor their condition, without offering any apology or compensation.

One packet of silica gel broke, so some of it got mixed in when I was making the drink. I didn’t notice it because it’s transparent. I’m usually very careful, but it’s a serious mistake for something like this to happen. I’m very sorry.
The employee explained that there was a packet of silica gel in a jar of cocoa power to keep it dry. But they didn’t notice the packet had broken open in the jar, so some got mixed in with the cocoa powder and put into the drink. The café said it would take responsibility if the customer had any adverse health effects. One doctor warned that if you accidently ingest desiccants, you should never try to vomit it up.

One type of desiccant generates heat. It harms the esophagus when swallowed, so should never be vomited back up.
Most silica gel is actually harmless. If ingested, it would not be digested and would simply pass through the body. But that doesn’t mean it’s okay find some in your coffee. The local health department sent personnel to inspect this café and said it would issue a fine if it found any serious offenses.

高雄有民眾到咖啡吧，買了一杯榛果可可飲，喝下去後，感覺有脆脆的口感，還以為是榛果，沒想到仔細一看，才發現居然是乾燥劑，店家向消費者致歉，表示是不小心跟著可可粉掉進去，以後會多加注意。而醫師也提醒，乾燥劑雖然大致對身體無害，但部分乾燥劑會發熱，如果誤食千萬不要催吐，否則會損傷食道。
香濃咖啡，一早來一杯最提神，不過有民眾到高雄苓雅區一間咖啡吧買飲品，卻喝到異物。
杯子裡撈出一顆一顆透明的小顆粒，不是小粉圓，居然是乾燥劑，民眾喝榛果可可飲，喝到脆脆的口感，以為是榛果，吞了幾顆下去後，發現沒有味道，最後才發現是乾燥劑。

“發生這事情，我當下一定是蠻炸裂的心態，可是我會看他們的態度怎麼樣。”

喝飲料喝到乾燥劑顆粒，實在嚇壞，擔心身體出狀況，當事人也抱怨，店家只是退錢，並請他觀察身體狀況，沒有任何道歉或補償，感覺很草率。

“一包乾燥劑破裂，所以那時候搖的時候有搖到，製作過程我沒有發現到，因為畢竟那是透明的，我是很小心的，現在又發生這樣，真的是很大的失誤，很抱歉。”
實地到店家詢問，業者解釋，可可粉罐內，有放一包乾燥劑，避免潮濕，只是乾燥劑破損，當下也沒發現，才跟著倒進飲料中，如果消費者身體有異狀，願意負起責任，不過如果誤食乾燥劑，醫生也提醒，千萬不要進行催吐。

“有一種乾燥劑會發熱，吃下會傷害到食道，所以絕對不可以催吐。”
誤食乾燥劑其實對身體大致上無害，也不會被消化，但咖啡內有乾燥劑，確實讓消費者嚇壞，衛生局也派員到咖啡吧稽查，若有嚴重缺失，不排除開罰。
