How stealthy are Taiwan’s tanks? The 10th Field Army was conducting drills in Yunlin’s Yuanchang Township, when locals noticed that the tanks used in the exercises were anything but inconspicuous. Every now and then, they would emit large plumes of thick smoke, raising eyebrows about their state. Let’s hear from a military expert.

The power packs of the M48H, also known as the CM11, or the M60A3 are already showing signs of aging. Even though they still operate normally, they produce quite a lot of smoke. The aging power packs do indeed affect the combat performance of these armored vehicles to some extent. That’s also why the military plans to upgrade them, replacing the old engines in these vehicles with new ones, for a better combat performance.
The 10th Field Army stated that the vehicles had undergone regular maintenance as required and had their fuel filters replaced. All inspections confirmed they were in good working condition. Since the CM11 tank has a diesel engine, under heavy load or when starting from a standstill, it requires higher throttle input to increase torque. That produces a spurt of black smoke, but there is nothing wrong with the tank.
