Building venerating Chiang Kai-shek renamed in transitional justice push

2025-11-03

Part of Chiayi’s Suantou Sugar Factory is a distinctive baroque building that has been called Jieshou Hall ever since it was built in 1957. The name wishes a long life for its namesake, Chiang Kai-shek. But recently, it was renamed in accordance with the government’s transitional justice policy and Ministry of the Interior requirements.

Written above this classic baroque sugar factory building are the three large characters meaning Auditorium. But until recently, it was called Jieshou Hall in honor of Chiang Kai-shek.

Member of public
The renaming of Jieshou Hall is a form of transitional justice. I fully support this move.

Huang Chiang-cheng
Factory manager
We came here all the time when I was a kid. They would play movies. Cultural events were always held here.

You can see from this old picture the old characters for Jieshou Hall above the entrance. Built in 1957, this is an iconic building within the Chiayi Suantou Sugar Factory complex. It’s been used for ceremonies and performances, and in recent years has also become popular for wedding photos and Instagram.

Wei Shui-liang
TaiSugar vice regional manager
We changed the name in mid-September in accordance with the Act on Promoting Transitional Justice.

Chen Shang-wen
Chiayi director of cultural assets
Respecting the approach taken by the Interior Ministry and TaiSugar, we would recommend that in the future, Jieshou Hall—as a significant part of the entire Suantou park—should be incorporated as a key component of guided tours.

Whether named Jieshou Hall or not, it remains a historically significant site that will continue to serve the community under a new name.
