A factory owner in Hualien found himself in the plot of a crime drama series when he climbed into his car and found a dead body in the passenger’s seat. The incident happened on Tuesday morning, when Mr. Tseng got into his Jeep and noticed a foul smell. He turned around and saw a stranger collapsed in the back, clearly dead. He was scared out of his wits and immediately called the police. Officers say the man may have crawled into the car to seek shelter from the cold, but the cause of death remains to be determined. The car wasn’t locked, and we didn’t find any signs of struggle. The deceased had no obvious injuries. The case has been referred to the Hualien District Prosecutors Office for a criminal investigation.

Surveillance footage from days ago shows he had previously asked for directions for the factory at the police station, saying he was looking for a friend. He walked into the factory and never came out. It remains unknown how the deceased man ended up inside the car., and many questions remain regarding his death. As for the car owner, it will likely take some time for him to recover from the shock.

Towering pine in Taichung becomes new tourist photo spot

One incredibly tall pine tree in a downtown Taichung neighborhood has become a popular tourist destination. Locals recommend three different spots to take photos here. The first is from across the street, which captures the blue sky and clouds behind the tree. The second is from the tree’s other side, which is best to take photos when the sun is setting. The third is from below the tree, which captures its incredible height without people in the frame.

As the reporter was filming, a local resident came by and demonstrated how to take his favorite photo of the tree. At the right time and from the right angle, the sun can be captured on top of the pine like a star on top of a Christmas tree.

This popular sight has even gotten its own tag on Google called “Taichung Wonder—Sky-Piercing Tree.” While most people just come to take photos, this 50-year-old tree also has a touching origin story.

The tree was planted by a husband and wife as a memento. The husband passed away young, and his wife always says that his spirit lives on in the tree. So, in a way, he continues to keep her company.

The pine tree’s deep roots reflect the strength of the couple’s love for one another. Although the husband has passed away, the tree continues to grow taller every year, serving as a memorial and symbol of their love.

Competing oyster restaurants draw customers with creative perks

When visiting Dongshi in Chiayi, you can’t miss their famous “milk oysters.” There are over 30 restaurants near the fishing wharf that serve all-you-can-eat grilled oysters. On this “oyster street,” one owner hired a face-changing Sichuanese opera performer for entertainment, while others provide a washer to ensure oyster quality or air-conditioning—whatever’s necessary to attract customers.

This Sichuanese opera performer’s mask changed in the blink of an eye.

Take a wider view, and you can see they’re actually performing at an all-you-can-eat grilled oyster restaurant in Dongshi. It’s a special weekend show to entertain the customers.

When we opened, we were already the 16th oyster restaurant here. It’s too saturated. So because of that, we had to come up with some creative ideas.

Unshelled oysters are dumped into a washer and tossed until clean in just a few minutes. Baskets of them are then put into the fridge, ready to be served all-you-can-eat until the entire family is satiated.

When you harvest them, the oysters are covered in mud and sand. If you use the washer, it can rinse off this mud and sand. That way it’s cleaner.

This restaurant specializes in offering air-conditioning. Their seven ACs are always hard at work to keep the inside cool on hot days.

Chiayi’s Dongshi is a main producer of oysters. Near the fishing wharf, there are more than 20 of these all-you-can-eat grilled oyster restaurants, forming an “oyster street” that serves as one of the town’s main tourist attractions.

Lai enjoys Japanese-sourced sushi lunch as China bans Japanese seafood

China on Wednesday announced an import ban on Japanese seafood as the rift between China and Japan escalates. On Thursday, President Lai Ching-te showed he’s Team Japan this round, with photos of his sushi lunch. Several ingredients were Japanese specialties well-loved by sushi aficionados. At the same time, Foreign Minsiter Lin Chia-lung also called on Taiwanese to stand with Japan against the CCP’s aggressive posturing.

These are scallops from Hokkaido, Japan and Japanese amberjack from Kagoshima. Look, such a full plate. The post was positively received by Japanese netizens, some of whom even gushed at how adorable the gesture is.

Hokkaido is Japan’s largest source of scallops. The succulent adductor muscles of Hokkaido sea scallops can be eaten raw or seared. Other ways to serve include scallop mini-burgers with fillings such as sea urchin roe, or on monaka wafers for contrasting textures.

Kagoshima is the largest source of Japanese amberjack. In a few deft strokes of the blade, the whole fish is turned into even, plump slices of sashimi.

The two icons of Japan’s north and south were highlighted as a solid endorsement of Japanese seafood. Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung also encourages Taiwanese to travel to Japan and buy Japanese products. Some may still remember former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo’s endorsement of Taiwan pineapple when China blocked its import.

Teacher goes viral for dressing as Cleopatra in school parade

For its 69th anniversary, Ching Cheng High School in Changhua recently held a parade themed around different countries, showcasing each classes’ creativity. One class picked Egypt, so their teacher dressed up as Cleopatra and was carried on a palanquin by her students. A video of the parade received over 200,000 likes and 2.46 million views online.

County rejects appeal for traffic lights at dangerous school crossing

A zebra crossing outside a high school in Hsinchu County has become the scene of frequent near-misses. Students stepping into the road find themselves dodging not only cars but scooters that zip past without slowing. Despite appeals from the school for push-button traffic lights to keep kids safe, county officials rejected the request, arguing that a signal would disrupt vehicle flow. Instead, they advised students to walk 50 meters to another crossing that does have traffic lights.

Getting to school is risky business. A student looks left and right, before dashing across on the zebra crossing.

That was a close one! The scooter braked just in time to avoid a crash.

This is the situation outside a high school in Zhubei. There’s no traffic lights at all, and students risks their lives going to class.

The school had requested the county government to install a push-button traffic light. But the request was rejected on grounds that it would disrupt traffic flow, as there are three schools along a 300m stretch of road.
