Minimalist train poster takes inspiration from anime ‘Evangelion’

Regular passengers on the Taiwan Railway are used to seeing notices. But lately they’ve been surprised by a new one warning passengers that causing a disturbance or making excessive noise might result in legal liability. But the design isn’t your usual TRC poster. The text is in all different sizes arranged horizontally and vertically. Some are saying it’s paying homage to the famous Japanese anime "Neon Genesis Evangelion." Although some people say they can’t read it, others are praising it for being concise, powerful and clear. Let’s see what you think.

At a Taiwan Railway station, there’s a new poster crammed with text big and small, some arranged vertically and others horizontally crammed into a square frame. It serves as a nice contrast to the neat and conventional posters on either side. But if you look closer, it makes no sense from any angle. What is it trying to say?

Unable to decipher a complete sentence, this poster sparked heated discussions online. But anime fans are rushing to pay homage. That’s because the design was inspired by the classic series “Neon Genesis Evangelion.”

First aired in 1995, “Evangelion” is an apocalyptic story about a teenager who pilots a giant biological weapon called an Evangelion to battle mysterious enemies known as the Angels. The typeface used for the mechas has become ingrained in fans’ minds. Its signature feature is in the striking contrast between characters of varying thickness and sizes, all densely packed together.

As everyone thinks the Taiwan Railway is conservative or old-fashioned, this could have a good effect.

The Taiwan Railway said it employed the striking visuals and highly resonant design to promote passenger safety.
