Japanese Candy Apple Maker to meet with Taisugar chair in December

Back in October, a gourmet candy apple maker from Japan had become a viral sensation for showing up at the airport with a suitcase full of white powder in Taisugar packages. It turned out the suspicious substance that alerted airport officials was indeed just fine powder sugar made by Taisugar. On Friday, it’s reported that Taisugar’s managers have been in touch with him, and he’ll be meeting with the company’s chairperson in December.

Japanese gourmet candy apple maker Ikeda Takatoshi pours a bag of Taiwan-made sugar into a simmering pot, then dips Japanese-grown apples into the syrup. Back in October, he became a media sensation when his suitcase full of the sugar, mistaken as narcotics, got him stopped twice by airport authorities on his way back to Japan.

Here he is, pictured with two 25kg-bags of sugar: one around his arm and another balanced on his head. How did he manage that? Turns out, they’re throw pillows made just for him, with wholesale bags as cover.

We got the hemp bags from our sugar business department in Kaohsiung, then filled them up with cotton stuffing. Takatoshi told us he really needed our sugar to make his products, so our Taipei division delivered on his request. I believe they sent over 20 large boxes of sugar.

Taisugar’s marketing department head says that because she speaks Japanese, she was able to reach the candy apple maker herself. Takatoshi had replied asking if he could visit Taisugar facilities to learn more about the history of sugar refinery in Taiwan. He said that it would be a great lesson for his company.

It’s now reported that Takatoshi will meet with Taisugar Chair Wu ming-chang in December.

今年10月曾有一名日本東京的甜點職人池田喬俊，因為要做蘋果糖，狂掃台灣砂糖，卻驚動海關，今天他PO文，開心證實已經收到台糖送他的禮物，台糖特別為他特製"砂糖抱枕"，而為了要把台灣砂糖的魅力，帶回日本，池田喬俊接受台糖邀請，將在12月和台糖董事長碰面。

日本蘋果糖職人池田喬俊，手上拿著台灣砂糖，一包包倒入鍋內溶解，拿出有香氣的日本蘋果，淋上滿滿糖漿，今年10月他狂掃砂糖裝在行李箱，驚動海關緝毒犬，爆紅的池田喬俊，意外讓台糖公司注意到他。

左手抱著一大袋細砂糖，右手乾脆把25公斤糖放在頭上，兩包那麼重的糖，有可能拿得這麼輕鬆嘛?原來台糖特製細砂糖抱枕，送他特製禮物。

“從我們高雄砂糖企業部那邊調來外包裝那個麻袋，然後自己再用棉絮把它填充。他(池田)說我現在很需要你們的糖來做這個產品，我們就台北營業所就趕快應他的需要，送了我記得是好像20箱的糖過去。”

台糖商業行銷部執行長陳黎珍透露，因為會日文，10月時聯繫上社長池田本人，池田喬俊在信中提到，能夠親自體驗台糖在製糖的歷史，對蘋果糖店來說是珍貴的學習。

池田喬俊還將在12月和台糖董事長吳明昌相約碰面。

A lot of the people who come to Aomori for the snow are Taiwanese. Since it doesn’t snow in Taiwan, lots of people from there enjoy this white landscape. Compared to China, there is more growth potential for Taiwanese tourists.

Apart from tourism, Japanese seafood has also been blocked once again from export to China. Facing this ban as well, Aomori’s mayor is just as resolved. He vowed to stand behind producers and help them seek new markets.

Artist’s lifelike peanut sculpture mistakenly seized by Japan customs

Inspired by his childhood growing up on a farm, Kaohsiung sculptor Tseng Ching-tung specializes in carving peanuts out of wood. Turns out they’re a little too realistic. When mailing his sculpture of peanuts and shells to Japan for an art competition, they were seized by customs for two days. Fortunately, they made it safely to their destination in the end. Let’s see just how realistic they are...

It’s hard not to be tempted by this platter of peanuts, some still in the shell and others broken open to reveal the peanut inside. But they’re actually all carved out of wood. Even if you look closely, they still look real. It was good enough to fool Japanese customs, which seized the sculpture.

I found Japan’s customs were holding it, and were even going to send it for testing. This is an artwork, not a banned product. I broke out into a sweat. You can’t import nuts. Ah, they really look like nuts.

Fortunately, after customs kept it for two days and tested it, they confirmed it was just wood. On Oct. 30, they forwarded the artwork to the contest, where it was selected for the finals and exhibited at an art center in Kobe. The outer shells are made of hinoki while the nuts are a slightly reddish juniper. Just one takes an entire day to carve. To make the entire platter, it took over a month.

It’s not easy being a farmer. We have an affinity for and understanding of these crops. So I’ll carve things that relate to our lives as farmers.

67-year-old Tseng used to install intercoms before running a parking lot, both careers that have nothing to do with art. But 15 years ago, after Typhoon Morakot, he saw lots of driftwood by the shore and imagined giving it new life. So he studied how to sculpt out of wood, and is now a master at making these remarkably lifelike nuts.

Devoted resident Father Michelini named honorary Yilan native

After moving to Taiwan 60 years ago, Father Gian Carlo Michelini has become one of Taiwan’s greatest champions. Now 89 years old, for decades he has devoted himself to the arts and education. He established the Lanyang Dance Troupe and helped create the Yilan International Children’s Folklore and Folkgame Festival, investing 60 years into Yilan’s cultural development. In recognition of his devotion, the Yilan government awarded him a certificate recognizing him as an honorary native of the county.

As the crowd applauds, Father Gian Carlo Michelini receives an honorary native certificate from Acting Yilan County Commissioner Lin Mao-sheng. This affirmation of his identity took 60 years to achieve. At the ceremony, Lin recalled how the Lanyang Dance Troupe only had the chance to perform for the pope because of the priest’s help.

Through Father Michelini’s facilitation, the Lanyang Dance Troupe went to the Vatican and met the pope. They were the first dance troupe to ever perform for the pope. It brought Taiwan to the world, and showed the world Taiwan and Yilan.

The first money I ever made was NT$6,000 from Father Michelini. When I graduated, I worked as a lifeguard at the Lanyang Youth Center pool. So not matter what, I have Father Michelini to thank.

At the event, young dancers with the Lanyang troupe gave a stirring performance. The troupe was founded in 1964 entirely of Father Michelini’s own accord. Their masterful performances have taken them around the world, putting Taiwan on the global stage and showing Father Michelini’s profound impact on Taiwanese culture and education.

KMT proposes bill to let Chinese nationals run for office in Taiwan

The KMT is moving to promote a bill to allow China-born residents to run for office without having to renounce their Chinese nationality. If passed, Chinese nationals would be allowed to be elected and hold public office as long as they have household registration in Taiwan for at least 10 years. The bill applies exclusively to Chinese immigrants, and not nationals of other countries. It has cleared its first reading and has been sent to the relevant committee for review. Let’s hear more.

Police officer gives away own money to help cash-strapped travelers

A couple traveling to Taichung found themselves in a pickle after they lost their wallet on their return trip. Without banking apps on their phones, they did not have access to cash. Though a police officer tracked down their wallet by reviewing security camera footage, the couple did not appear the least bit relieved. Turns out they were in such a dire financial situation that they didn’t have money for gas to get back home. The officer decided to give them NT$1,000 out of his own pocket so that they could return home safely, without asking for anything in return.

The reporter called 110 to file a report and said that he’s lost his wallet, and needed us to examine surveillance footage at the convenience store to track it down.

The couple drove from Kaohsiung to Taichung to visit friends, and ended up losing their wallet at a convenience store on their way back. They immediately sought help from the police, who discovered that it had been picked up by a security guard. This would’ve been good news, but for the couple, the amount of time it’d take to finally get their wallet back had them worried.

They looked really downcast. So I asked him if they needed any help. He insisted that he’d be fine and that he’d hang on.

They did not have cash with them otherwise, and worse, neither had banking apps, making it impossible to withdraw cash. Without a single penny and with the tank running low, they might not even have been able to make it home. Luckily, the officer gave them a helping hand.

I was worried that their car might stop running, so I gave them some cash. I told them it’s okay to keep it just in case. If you really want to pay me back, just donate to charity. It’s okay if I don’t get it back.

The officer gave them NT$1,000 out of his own pocket to help them. It may not seem like much, but it turned their situation around. The 27-year-old officer had just started serving at this new outpost in Taichung. In his six years with the police, he’s already been honored as a do-gooder.

He’s really proactive and kindhearted, and also very diligent. Seeing that the member of public made a social media post to thank him really showed that he’s made a great impact passing on kindness.

After the couple got home, they made a social media post to thank the police officer for lending a helping hand.
