Pingtung’s ninth annual Christmas Festival lights the holiday spirit

Pingtung’s ninth annual Christmas Festival is bringing European Christmas market vibes to southern Taiwan. Running until January 4 at Pingtung Park, it includes 14 different Christmas light installations, depicting a Christmas cabin, the northern lights, igloos, and much more. There is also a Christmas village with a lively market, and even a giant Christmas tree outside the nearby train station, welcoming people to celebrate Christmas in Pingtung.

Pingtung County Commissioner Chou Chun-miand other local representatives light up the main light installation at Pingtung’s 2025 Christmas Festival.

The festival team worked hard this year to design 14 different light installations that will be on display at Pingtung Park until January 4. Every day from 5:30pm to 10pm, people can come here to get into the Christmas spirit.

A little girl sits on a chair in one of the installations, too enchanted to move even for the county commissioner. For the first time in its nine-year history, this year’s festival includes a vibrant Christmas market, with stalls set up like cabins selling refreshments and souvenirs.

We have two main light installations, one in Pingtung Park and the other at Pingtung Station. You can join us on Zhonghua Road on the 29th and 30th, and for our Christmas market on December 20th and 21st.

As Christmas Day draws closer, Pingtung Park has transformed into a Christmas wonderland, welcoming people to celebrate the holiday in southern Taiwan.

連續第九年舉辦的屏東聖誕節活動，今年在屏東公園揭開序幕，以聖誕村為主題，設計了14組不同的燈飾，還打造出了一座小型聖誕市集，希望讓民眾感受有如身處歐洲的聖誕氣氛，而屏東車站外，也推出了絢爛奪目的星願聖誕樹，要迎接遊客到屏東過節。

屏東縣長周春米啟動2025屏東聖誕節的主燈，瞬間屏東公園亮起了璀璨燈光。

為了要妝點最有特色的燈飾，屏東縣府絞盡腦汁，今年以聖誕村為主題，在屏東公園內推出14組特色燈飾，到明年1月4日前，從每天下午五點半到晚上十點，都能在這裡感受到最濃的過節氣息。

小妹妹坐在造型燈飾上，看得入迷，連縣長來了也不為所動。今年也首次推出了小型的聖誕市集，打造四間聖誕小木屋，要讓參觀民眾更融入聖誕節的氣氛裡面。

A groom recently walked down the aisle dressed as Zhu Bajie, a character from Journey to the West, showing off his round belly and carrying a nine-toothed rake—the character’s choice weapon. He chose this look for his wedding photos and decided to stick with it for the ceremony in Kaohsiung. His friends and family joked that he was showing more skin than the bride!

It was basically just a joke. Everyone was still watching the videos, and they only snapped back to reality after the host cued them. Then we got swarmed.

The couple actually took their wedding photos six years ago. To help promote his friend’s costume shop, the groom borrowed a Zhu Bajie outfit for one of the looks. When they finally hosted their wedding this year, he decided to recreate the look.

I also dressed up as Zhu Bajie for our wedding photos. I’m used to being fat, so it’s no big deal. Neither of our parents interfered with our wedding, so even if they wanted to stop it, it was too late.

This couple had a grand time planning their wedding and added their own brand of humor to surprise their friends and family, making their wedding unforgettable.

University hosts music video awards ceremony for young creators

The Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages recently held the Golden Spark Music Video Awards, inviting high-school and college students to produce music videos and compete for honors. The university secured the rights to hit songs for students to use, encouraging them to develop narrative skills in visual media. The ceremony ended up being as grand as the Golden Melody Awards.

The punk band Captain Ordinary performs at the Golden Spark Music Video Awards, a music video production competition between high-school and college students. Participants made music videos using songs from five bands including Captain Ordinary, Fire EX, and Kid King, showing their talent at conveying music through videography.

I was moved by today’s ceremony, because I could see the young people’s love of music and passion for videography.

By securing the rights to popular songs, the competition encouraged students to create music videos for the current pop music industry. Thirty entries made it to the finals and were featured in the ceremony, which was as grand as any major awards ceremony.

Amongst the nominees, I noticed that a lot of students actually focused on narrative in their music videos. That is to say, they really like using storytelling to express their feelings about a song.

We can see for ourselves that with the arrival of AI, this industry is definitely going to change. But what won’t change is the creative intent of us artists, because everything else is only tools. I think this competition is great because we can see that these creators truly thought about how to create something that tells a story.

The competition judged the videos’ narratives and alignment with the song, celebrating the work of talented young creators and encouraging the next generation of videographers.

Crop-spraying drone reduces two-hour job to 15 minutes

Farming these days doesn’t necessarily mean backbreaking labor, thanks to an increasing number of smart solutions. One such technology recently introduced in Pingtung’s Gaoshu Township is a smart crop-spraying drone. By flying at high altitudes with precision, they can identify crop conditions and spray pesticide or fertilizer wherever needed. It saves on labor and reduces errors, while also making the entire process safer. Spraying nearly 4,000 square meters used to take two hours, but the drone can do it in less than 15 minutes. For an industry that’s short of labor, the prospects are promising.

A drone takes off, flying back and forth over a field of crops. But it’s not taking pictures. It’s spraying fertilizer.

This is a drone made exclusively for agriculture, capable of carrying 20 to 30 kilograms of fertilizer or pesticide. For nearly 4,000 square meters of farmland, work that used to take two hours now takes less than 15 minutes, making farmers’ job far more efficient.

It costs NT$250 to hire someone to spray nearly 1,000 square meters. The drone costs NT$200 and it only takes about 15 minutes.

With the introduction of advanced technologies like this agricultural drone, farmers can cultivate larger fields. This could basically mechanize their entire operation, significantly reducing the need for manual labor.

Once the data is configured, the drone can identify crop conditions through high-altitude precision flight and perform targeted spraying. It not only saves on labor and reduces errors, but also makes the job safer. Many farmers in Pingtung’s Gaoshu Township have already incorporated it into their work.

Our taro is sprayed by the drones. Also fertilizer, insecticide and fungicide. Rice paddies too. We’ll also use it for some orchards, like during the banana growing season.

To operate one of these drones, you need to have a drone pilot’s license from the Civil Aviation Administration, as well as training certification from the Ministry of Agriculture. But for an industry short on labor, prospects are bright for this crop-spraying drone as a new employment opportunity.

Lai interviewed by US media as ‘President of Taiwan’

A prerecorded interview with President Lai Ching-te was aired on Wednesday at the New York Times DealBook Summit, held in-person at a central location in New York City. Notably, he was placed at the very top of the speaker’s roster, and referred to in honorifics as “Dr. Lai Ching-te, President of Taiwan.” The conversation touched upon crucial topics pertaining to international business and geopolitics, highlighting Taiwan’s importance on the global stage.

The New York Times’ annual DealBook Summit kicked off on Wednesday. President Lai Ching-te’s interview, prerecorded via videoconference, addressed cross-strait tension right at the beginning.

You’ve just announced this past week that you’re introducing a US$40 billion special budget for military spending. What indicators, and perhaps new indicators, are you looking at that shows increased threat to Taiwan?

We can see that China’s military drills targeted at Taiwan are becoming increasingly frequent and intense. At the same time, China’s united front influence campaigns against Taiwan are also becoming more serious.

The host then asked what Lai thought of Beijing’s timeline for an attempted invasion of Taiwan, since he had previously stated that the PLA’s preparations to be capable of taking Taiwan by force by 2027 is accelerating.

We must ensure the best possible preparations for the worst-case scenarios. Whatever timeline the PLA may have, Taiwan’s fundamental principle is that we must be ready first – this is our basic principle.

He was also asked how confident he is in the US, particularly under President Donald Trump, if it would come to the aid of Taiwan if China were to invade. Without giving a direct response, Lai emphasized that US-Taiwan cooperation had expanded since Trump took office.

Our relationship truly is rock-solid. Since President Trump took office, cooperation with Taiwan has not only continued but even expanded.

Since trade and investment amid US reindustrialization efforts were touched upon, the president stated that Taiwan supports semiconductor firms to invest wherever they believe is needed, including the US. And for whether Taiwan’s position in AI-related industries would affect China’s military and grey-zone activities over Taiwan, this was his response.

We sincerely hope that as China faces economic pressures, President Xi Jinping will focus not on territorial expansion but on improving the well-being of the Chinese people. Taiwan is willing to help and to cooperate in addressing these economic challenges.

This year’s DealBook Summit also features political and business leaders including US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and California Governor Gavin Newsom, among others. Notably, President Lai was placed at the very forefront of the mainstage lineup, and referred to as “Dr. Lai Ching-te, President of Taiwan,” demonstrating the timeliness and urgency of closer Taiwan-US relations.
