Taitung hospital car wash helps patients transition back to workplace

The Taitung branch of Taipei Veterans General Hospital has the biggest psychiatric center in the county. To help recently discharged patients transition back to the workplace, the hospital last week set aside a portion of its parking lot for three former patients to wash cars. The service was an instant hit!
Three workers scrub all over a car’s body and windows with soapy sponges.
But this car wash isn’t a private business. It was set up by the Taitung branch of Taipei Veterans General Hospital.

It gives a chance for our recently discharged patients to get some training before going out into the workforce. They can build confidence and learn the skill of how to wash a car, as well as interact with customers and work on a team.
To help recently discharged patients adjust back to the workplace, the hospital earlier this month set aside a part of its parking lot for the car wash. Led by occupational therapists, the participants provide car washing and waxing services on weekday mornings. It only costs NT$50 to NT$200—a very affordable price.

I’m happy, very pleased. Because everyone does different tasks. And after coming here, I met so many different kinds of customers. I’ve worked at a gas station before, and I’ve also washed cars. So I mostly know how to do it.

The hospital’s intentions are good, so I did it. It’s also nearby, so I came right over. They did a good job.
The public has praised the hospital for its commendable idea. Since Taitung is quite dusty, there’s high demand for washing cars. Moving forward, the physicians will keep tabs on how it’s going to see if they can add more people. Once a patient is able and expresses willingness to work, the hospital will also help refer them for suitable jobs.

榮總台東分院增設"洗車隊" 助身心病友銜接職場

榮總台東分院，是台東縣主要的精神科醫療院所，為協助剛出院的身心病友銜接職場，上周開始，院方特意騰出停車場部分空間，並聘請三位員工提供洗車服務，一推出，就吸引不少民眾前來洗車！
三名員工手拿海綿，擠上泡沫，在車體、玻璃，不停來回擦拭。
這處洗車場，並不是民營場域，而是由榮總台東分院設立的"榮仔洗車隊"。

“為了就是我們的出院病人，可以在出去外面工作前，有一個工作訓練的機會，然後也讓他們在這邊建立信心，然後學習洗車的這項技能，跟客人的互動還有他們的團隊合作。”
為協助剛出院的身心病友銜接職場，12月初院方，騰出停車場部分空間，由職能治療師，帶領學員在院區，平日上午提供洗車、打蠟服務，僅收費50元到200元，價格相當親民。

“很開心、很快樂，因為有大家一起分工合作，後來之後來到這邊，又認識了很多不一樣的客人。我之前也有在加油站工作過，我也是做洗車的，所以我大概比較清楚，車子要怎麼洗、要怎麼弄。”

“他們(院方)的出發點蠻好的，所以做得到，也剛好在附近，就過來了這樣子，洗得不錯。”
民眾讚譽有加、表揚院方善舉，由於台東風沙大，洗車需求高，後續將視門診醫師評估狀況，有望擴增人數，等待病情穩定並具備就業意願，院方也會協助轉介媒合適當職缺。
