AIT Director ‘looking forward’ to fielding questions on defense budget

The Legislative Yuan has twice blocked a supplementary defense budget of NT$1.25 trillion put forward by President Lai Ching-te. The block has drawn the attention of allies including the US. In a media interview AIT Director Raymond Greene emphasized the importance of deterrence as a means to maintain peace. He said he was confident that Taiwan’s political parties would ultimately come together to increase Taiwan’s defense pending. Meanwhile the KMT is calling on the US to sell advanced arms to Taiwan, and to set up factories in Taiwan to produce arms locally. Let’s hear more.

AIT Director Raymond Greene was very clear on this, and what he said is in line with our ministry’s position. We must use strength to create deterrence and maintain peace.
Greene said he was looking forward to answering lawmaker’s questions after the special budget proposal makes in onto the agenda at the Legislative Yuan. Meanwhile, the US Congressional Taiwan Caucus has weighed in on the matter. It released bipartisan statement saying that they encourage Taiwan’s parties to move forward with the package in a unified manner. It also stresses that Taiwan’s investment in its own security is central to the stability of the Taiwan Strait.

賴總統拋出1.25兆國防特別預算，卻遭在野黨，在立法院二度封殺，AIT處長谷立言接受媒體訪問時，強調透過嚇阻提升和平是重要一步，還說相信台灣各政黨會為了提高國防支出而團結。國民黨團則主張美國先進武器要賣給台灣，還要求美國在台灣設廠生產。

“賴總統必須親自到國會報告，說明1.25兆預算，到底買些什麼武器，既然賴總統當初能夠投書外媒支持軍購，為何不再次投書，要求美國出售真正的先進武器到台灣?”

“鄭麗文為了鄭習會的三張門票，如果沒有這三個前提，那麼為什麼不讓程序委員會正當光明地，將軍購特別條例列案呢?”

“我想谷立言處長已經說明得非常清楚，也就是跟我們國防部的立場是一致的，以實力帶來嚇阻，以嚇阻帶來和平。”
谷立言還表示，當預算案進入立院審查，願回答立委們的問題。另外，美國國會參議院，台灣連線兩黨聯合聲明，"鼓勵台灣所有政黨，以即時團結方式，推動這項對自身安全的投資。
